São Paulo School of Advanced Science on High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics in the CTA Era (SPSAS-HighAstro)RegistrationRegistration opens at 8:00 on Monday (May 22nd, 2017) by the IAG Audi-torium where the SPSAS-HighAstro activities will take place. Please stop by at registration as soon as you arrive.

Please notice:The School secretary will be available near the Auditorium in the mor-ning period. If you need any assistance, after the lunch break, we can be found in the Administrative building – office ADM-207.

VenueThe SPSAS-HighAstro will take place at Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas (IAG) campus. IAG was founded in 1934 but only in 1946 was incor-porated into Universidade de São Paulo (USP). It is one of the major research centers of Brazil, in the Sciences of Earth and the Universe.

Located at the São Paulo Cam-pus, IAG is organized into three departments – Astronomy, Geo-physics and Atmospheric Sciences – that support teaching activities on undergraduate and graduate levels, research and community services. The Institute also runs two off-campus premises: Abrahão de Moraes Ob-servatory, in the city of Valinhos, and the Meteorological Station, located inside USP’s Science and Technology Park in the city of São Paulo.

Besides the intensive collaboration with Brazilian and foreign rese-arch institutions, IAG’s faculty members coordinate research projects of major scientific and socio-economical impact. As a result, its large scientific production places IAG among the most productive research institutions in Latin America.

Please contact the School secretary if you are interested in learning about opportunities at IAG.

Please notice:The funding agency Fapesp, which is the main sponsor of SPSAS-Hi-ghAstro, also offers many opportunities to study and research in Brazil. Learn more at http://www.fapesp.br/en/

Visiting Brazil

Brazil maintains a reciprocal visa policy. For tourism purposes, Brazil is visa-free for many countries in Europe and Central America. For citizens of many countries in South America, including Argentina and Chile, it is possible to visit Brazil with a national identity card (but the document must be recent). Please verify the requirements for your country in this list:http://www.portalconsular.itamaraty.gov.br/images/qgrv/QGRV- simples-ing-08-12-16.pdf

Health and immunizationThere is no mandatory vaccine to enter Brazil, but please pay attention to the orientations from the Health organ in your country of origin as well.

If you are going to leave the city of Sao Paulo, please learn about areas with Vaccination Recommendation (ACRV), as it may be recommended to vaccinate against yellow fever (10 days prior to the trip). Those visiting the Amazon (states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Gros-so, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins) must also take precautions against Malaria transmission.

Many areas in Brazil, including the city of Sao Paulo, have registered the occurrence of diseases carried by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, such as dengue and zika virus. The main form of prevention focuses on the mosquitos, including the usage of insect repellent. In the city of Sao Pau-lo, the incidence of such diseases was much lower in 2017. The month of May also has a lower transmission rate due to the weather, which is drier and colder.

The School will provide health insurance coverage for foreign visitors, from May 21st until May 31st. Public health services in Brazil are free for foreign tourists, so you can also call for emergency services dialing 192 on your phone.

Food and waterTap water is safe and fine for consumption in Sao Paulo, but most people will prefer to use water fountains or getting bottled mineral water, to avoid any taste or smell of chloride that is added on the water treatment. At IAG (the SPSAS-HighAstro venue) you will find water filters – use your SPSAS-HighAstro mug or any personal bottle.

There is no general concern with food poisoning in Sao Paulo. Howe-ver, it is advised to wash thoroughly all the fresh food you buy at super-markets or shops. Most restaurants should be safe – just use your com-mon sense.

CurrencyThe Brazilian currency is the Real (plural: Reais). Its sign is R$. Cur-

rently, USD 1 averages at R$ 3.15. Foreign currencies are not common-ly accepted on the commerce, but credit cards are widely used (mainly VISA or MasterCard).

You can exchange US Dollars, Euros and British Pounds to Reais at many banks and Exchange offices. Other currencies will be more diffi-cult to exchange in Brazil, so you may want to consider exchanging it before your trip or use the exchange service at the airport.

Please notice:The registration fee must be paid in Reais. Registration starts at Monday, May 21st, at 8:00 at the School venue. (Students: 50 USD; post-docs and seniors: 100 USD)

LanguageThe official language in Brazil is Portuguese, which is a Latin language similar to Spanish. All the activities of the SPSAS-HighAstro will be in English, due to its international characteristic. Be prepared to deal with non-English speakers on buses, restaurants, etc; however, it is a common characteristic of Brazilians to try to help foreigners as much as possible, even in a big city as Sao Paulo.

The city of São Paulo

São Paulo is the capital of the state of São Paulo and one of the most po-pulous cities in the world. Neither São Paulo nor Rio de Janeiro are the national capital – that would be Brasilia, which is located in the center-

-western region.Over 12 million people live in the city of Sao Paulo; if you count the

entire metropolitan area, that number surpasses 21 million people. Like many big cities, it is full of contrasts.

Crime can be a serious issue in São Paulo, so we ask you to be careful during your stay. But this shouldn’t prevent you from exploring the city, and here are some tips if you wish to do so:

• Watch out for pickpockets on buses, subway trains or on the street;• Do not carry exposed expensive electronics, such as cameras or

notebooks. Being discrete is normally the best way of acting;• Learn more about the areas you want to visit. You can ask the

School staff or your Brazilian colleagues for information;• The area of the hotel is close to the campus and the streets are very

busy with cars – but less so with pedestrians, especially at night. • Avenida Paulista and Rua dos Pinheiros are places with easy ac-

cess and options of restaurants and bars. Such places draw more people even during the evening, and they are generally a safe pla-ce to go out.

• There are interesting and traditional places to visit in the downto-wn area, but these places and stations are very crowded and requi-re more attention against robbers even in daylight.

You will be visiting São Paulo in May, during the Brazilian Autumn. The average temperature range between 16°C and 25°C (61°F and 77°F),

Page 14: GUIDE AND TIPS - USP · for is 257 METRO TATUAPE. You can take this bus at the Central Lane when you exit Terminals 1, 2 or 3. Bus fare: R$ 5.95. 2. You will get off the bus at the

14

but it may drop to a low 11°C (52°F) on a rainy morning. The average rain-fall is also lower in this season, at 30mm during the month of May. We advise you to check the extended forecast at services such as Accuwea-ther before your trip.

Getting around São PauloSão Paulo’s subway system (Metrô) is integrated with the metropo-

litan rail network (CPTM). This system is safe, but limited. São Paulo’s surface bus network is more extensive, including several express lanes.

Metrô website: http://www.metro.sp.gov.br/en/your-trip/index.aspxCPTM website (Portuguese only): http://www.cptm.sp.gov.br/sua-viagem/Pages/Linhas.aspxThe tickets for subway, trains and city buses cost R$3.80. You can take

any bus and pay for your ticket inside it, but be aware that R$20.00 is a limiting value for the change. You should board by the front door and pay to the conductor in the middle of the bus (not to the driver).

If you prefer or need to use private transportation, it is increasingly common in São Paulo to call for taxis using apps such as 99 Taxi and EasyTaxi, as well as Uber and Cabify. At the USP campus you can also request transportation at three taxi stands at USP (ask for help from the School staff if necessary):

• University Hospital (HU - Hospital Universitário) (11) 3091-3532• Banks (Bancos) (11) 3091-4488• Dean’s Office (Reitoria) (11) 3091-3556If you need a taxi while at the hotel, you can ask front desk to help you.

Please notice:Those staying at the Go Inn Jaguaré hotel will be offered free transporta-tion to all School activities.

Driving in São PauloMost international driver licenses are accepted for driving a rented

car, but be aware that traffic in Sao Paulo can be really busy, especially on rush hours or during rainfall. When driving in São Paulo, pay special attention to motorcycles riding between cars.

You will find car rental companies at the airport or in town. Brazilians drive on the right side of the road, with the steering wheel on the left side of the car (RHT). Brazil follows the metric system, so speed limit signs will be in km/h.

Please notice:Most hotels will charge extra for parking.

How to charge and connect your gadgets

The voltage in Sao Paulo is 110V, 60Hz. In some places you may also find 220V outlets, but they are not the standard and are usually red – you will see some of these in our Auditorium.

The current national standard (IEC 60906-1) looks like this:

The outlet works on plugs with either two or three pins, but the plug must have this shape. We recommend getting an international power plug adapter and avoid any problems of running out of batteries.

Wi-fi internet and mobile internetYou will have wifi service at the hotel (ask for information at the front desk) and at the School (login information provided on the first section of this guide).

If you plan to use your own phone service during your stay in São Pau-lo, you need to check with your operator to allow usage in Brazil. Pay spe-cial attention to the fees and charges for this service, as it can be very expensive.

Another option is to purchase a prepaid SIM card (you will have to pre-sent your passport, and your phone must be unblocked). You can find the information for international visitors at the website of the mobile operators:

• CLARO: https://goo.gl/Id1SwD• TIM: https://goo.gl/kJ0lBi• VIVO: https://goo.gl/e9CKH6

Making phone calls in BrazilThe country code in Brazil is +55 and Sao Paulo area code is 11. Whenever you need to use a country or area code, you are going to need to select an operator. If you are using a Brazilian service, it is usually best to use the code of your operator (Claro: 21, Tim: 41, Vivo: 15).
