SKIING
Being family friendly is top priority in Pitztal! Children under the age of 10 go free with the “Bambini Pass” at the Hochzeiger, Riffl see and Pitztal Glacier resorts when accompanied by a parent. (Please note that the discount for children is only given on presen-tation of a family passport or individual passports for children and parents without exception. Otherwise the full children’s price will have to be paid). Children enjoy meeting up in the “Kinderland” at Hochzeiger and on Pitztal Glacier! The little ones can try their new sledges, boards and skis. Fairytale obstacle characters ensure great fun in the snow. The ski schools Hochzeiger Snowsport School and Pitztal Glacier/Riffl see Ski School enjoy helping the kids on their fi rst steps on snow or in perfecting their ski technique.

GLACIER WORLD
The entire Pitztal boasts 46 glaciers with a total surface of 35 km2. The Mittelberg Glacier covers one of the largest areas of the Eastern Alps. In winter, enjoy the breathtaking experience of skiing over the Ta-schach Glacier all the way down to the valley. Please note that this is only possible with a ski instructor. Glaciers arise above the snow line in the summit region of a high mountain range. The defrosting snow masses are compressed to ice and move at a speed of about 100 m per year down toward the valley. This tongue-shaped ice stream, the so-called glacier tongue, melts below the snow line and forms a vaultlike opening, the glacier cave, where the glacial stream has its source. A view of the interior of this ice cave is one of the highlights of a glacier visit in the summer.
FEEL THE ETERNAL ICE.

TRADITION MILLS MILLS TRADITION
MILLS AND THEIR VALUEMILL IN THE HAMLET OF ARZL-RIEDThis Sleeping Beauty of an 18th century grain mill was awakened from its age-long slumber by a dedicated group of mill enthusiasts. It is wi-dely regarded as a technical monument to the centuries-old tradition of milling grain in the Alpine regions and can be visited on request (Helene Schrott: tel: +43(0)5412-65049).
MILL IN JERZENS AND MILK PIPELINEIn 1862 38 farmers from Jerzens built a community mill. At the time, Jerzens grew approx. 30 ha rye, 33 ha barley, 5 ha wheat und 15 ha corn. In the whole of Tyrol, Jerzens grew grain maize on the highest altitude. The growing of cereal has since decreased to 0.2 ha. The farmers have therefore ceased milling and sold their shares to the council and the agricultural cooperative Tanzalpe in 1980, who erec-ted a new mill in its place in 1985. This building now accommodates a milling gear dating back to 1862 and a milk collection point. In the summer months it is used to mill grain and make bread. In 1957 a 3 km long and 9 mm wide milk pipeline was built from the mountain pasture Tanzalpe (Jerzner Alm) all the way down to the mill in Jerzens village, which is being used in the summer months. The alpine pasture is located in the Hochzeiger ski resort and has extends to 758 ha of which 240 are usable as grazing Land. Between mid-June and mid-September approximately 85 cows and 80 young cattle graze on the Tanzalpe. Their daily milk yield is 800 litres. In 1990 the agricultural cooperative erected a new stable with a modern milking system on the alpine pasture. The milk is cooled down from 32 to 4.5 degrees within minutes and is thus achieves the highest quality class. A visit of the mountain hut is possible at any time. From about mid-June to mid-September, fresh milk is ready for collection between 8-9 pm at the Old Mill in Jerzens (opposite the fi re station).

FLIESS MUSEUM – ANCIENT SACRIFICIAL BURNTOFFERINGS SITE ON THE PILLER MOUNTAIN SADDLE
The cult around the Piller dates back to the Bronze Age: animals were sacrifi ced to the gods on stone altars. During the latter ice age it was mostly material gifts (trinkets, coins, ceramics, fi bulae and weapons) that were supposed to appease the gods. The cult site came to an end with the spread of Christianity. All archaeological fi nds from this prehistoric sanctuary are exhibited at the Fließ Archaeological Museum.
