Tales from the Altamaha 2014 in LyonsListen… can you hear it? The rustle of the wind in the trees, birds chirping in flight, and the

waters of the Altamaha? It’s calling, calling…and once again you will have the opportunity to betransported back to a time when Southern traditions were just beingforged. This award-winning Georgia folk-like play is drawn from the writingsof Colonel T. Ross Sharpe, a local attorney born and raised on theAltamaha River, who wrote a series of essays in the local newspaper dur-ing the 1950’s and 60’s about the regional settlers of the area around theriver. Since 2005, Tales from the Altamaha has entertained audiences fromall over the southeast with a different selection of Colonel Ross’ storiesinterwoven with bluegrass music performed by the River Rat Review Band.

Tales from the Altamaha 2014 takes the stage for its tenth anniversaryproduction in April and May with “A Decade of Sweet Memories,” a collec-tion of the best scenes and songs from the last nine years. A project ofLyons Better Hometown, Tales from the Altamaha continues to be a cul-tural celebration steeped in the Southern traditions unique to rural South

Georgia. Make plans now to embark on the ride of a lifetime as you experience the lives, loves, losses, scandals, and just plain ol’ gossip that are Tales from the Altamaha.

Tickets range in price from $10-$20. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more.Performance dates will be April 25-26, 29, May 1-3. Visit www.talesfromthealtamaha.com or call912-526-6445 for more information.

Fitzgerald Wild Chicken FestivalThe exotic and beautiful Burmese chickens are a familiar

part of the downtown Fitzgerald scene. Resembling fightinggame chickens, they sport brilliant orange and yellow ruffs andgleaming black tail feathers. The Burmese chickens werereleased in Ben Hill County in the 1960’s by the GeorgiaDepartment of Natural Resources as an additional game birdbut somehow made their way to downtown Fitzgerald. Therethey have a love-hate relationship with residents, some ofwhom buy seed and feed them while others chase them out ofgardens with a broom! The chickens wake upfolks, create minor traffic problems, and, some claim, even keep the bugs away.

In celebration of these chickens, Fitz geraldwill hold its annual Wild Chicken Festival onSaturday, March 15, in the historic downtownwith arts & crafts, food, fun, and more. Therewill be a pancake breakfast at 6am, a 5K WildChicken Sprint at 8am, a chicken crowing con-test at noon, a wing eating contest at 2pm, agroup chicken dance at 4pm, and entertain-ment all day.
