Finally,Android5.0LollipophasstartedtorollforownersofthenewerXperiaZseries,howeverthelimitingfactoristhatitiscurrentlyonlyavailableinselectregions.ForthosethatdonthavethepatienceforittoarriveintheirregionwevecreatedaquickguideonhowtodownloadandinstalltheLollipopupdatetoyourSonyXperiadevice.

Theprocesswillbefamiliartolongtermreadersoftheblogandessentiallyifyouvereadoneofourvariousdebrandguidesinthepast,alongwithourtutorialonhowtocreateaFTFfirmwarefilethenyoureprettymuchthere.However,afternumerousrequestswevedecidedtoprovidestepbystepinstructionsforthosenewtoXperiadevices.

InstallingXperiaLollipopusingXperiFirmandFlashtool[TUTORIAL]

Note:YoudoNOTneedanunlockedbootloaderorrootforyoutoflashyourhandset.WarrantywillNOTbevoidedifyouflashnewfirmwaretoyourhandset.

Itisrecommendedthatyoucreateabackupofyourexistingregional/carrierfirmwarejustincaseyouneedtosendyourdevicebackforrepair.Thisguidecanbeusedto



createanyfirmwarefile,sotocreateabackupjustfollowtheinstructionsbelowwiththerelevantfirmwarebuild.

Preparation

1)EnableUSBdebuggingonyourhandset:Settings>Developeroptions

2)EnableUnknownsourcesonyourhandset:Settings>Security

3)InstalldriversforyourXperiahandset:YouneedtoensurethatyourPChasallofthenecessarydriversinstalledforyourSonyXperia.ThebestwaytodothisistoinstallPCCompanion.

MakesureyouconnectyourXperiatothePCbeforestartingtheprocesstodownloadthenecessaryUSBandADBdrivers.Ifyouhaveanyproblemsyouwillfindthenecessarydrivers(onceyouhaveinstalledFlashtool)inthefollowinglocation:C:\Flashtool\drivers.

XperiFirmsteps

FirststepistodownloadXperiFirm.Followtheinstructionsinthatlinktoinstall.

Onceinstalledyouwillseetheprogrambelow.Navigatetoyourhandsetontheleftpane.Youcanthenchoosethefirmwareforyourregion/carrierinthemiddlepane.Thepaneontherightsidewillshowyouwhichfirmwareisavailableforthatregion.Clickonittodownloadthefile.

Important:Onlydownloadfirmwareforyourmodelandvariantnumber.Forexample,ifyouownaXperiaZ3(D6603),onlybrowseanddownloadthefirmwarebuildslistedunderD6603.

Onceclicked,youareaskedtoconfirmwhetheryouwanttodownloadthefirmware.EnsurethatUnpackautomaticallyistickedandthenclickDownloadtoproceed.



Chooseanyfolderasalocationtodownloadthenewfirmware.



Thefirmwarewillnowstartdownloading.

Oncecomplete,youwillseethefollowingpopmessageUnpackedSuccessfully!ClickOK.

ThesameUnpackedsuccessfully!messagewillappearonthedownloaddialog.ClickClose.



Checkyourdownloadlocationandyouwillfindanewfolderthatcontainsyourfirmwarefiles.

Insidethefolder,youshouldfindanumberoffilesthatlooksimilartothebelow.Congrats!ThatistheXperiFirmpartofthetutorialcomplete.YounowhavethenecessaryfilestocreateyourFTFfirmwarefiletoflashyourhandsetusingFlashtool.



FlashToolsteps

DownloadandinstallFlashTool.

Note:ToinstalltheFlashtooldriversforWindows8/Windows8.1,pleasefollowthestepsbelow.

1)PresstheWindowskey+Randintherunboxtype:shutdown.exe/r/o/f/t00NowmakethefollowingselectionstobootintotheStartUpSettingScreen:Troubleshoot>Advancedoptions>StartUpSettings>RestartThen,whenthemachinerestarts,selectnumber7i.e.Disabledriversignatureenforcement.YourmachinewillstartwithDriversigningenforcementdisableduntilthenextreboot.

2)NowyoucaninstalltheFlashtooldrivers.Windowswillwarnthatthedriverisnotsignedandwillrequireyoutoconfirmtheinstallation.Oncetheinstallationiscomplete,rebootthemachine

Onceyoulaunchtheprogram,youshouldseesomethingsimilartothebelow.NavigatetoTools>Bundles>Create.

AnewpopupcalledBundlerwillappear.ClickonthethreedotsnexttoSelectsourcefolder.



NowchoosethefolderwhereyourfirmwarefilesarelocatedandclickOK.

ThebottomfolderlistoftheBundlershouldnowincludeallofthefirmwarefiles.NowdoubleclickintheDevicespacetoinputtheXperiasmartphoneortabletthatyouwanttoflash.



Onceyouchooseyourdevice,youwillthenbepromptedtochoosethevariant.Ifyoudontknowyourvariant,gotoyourXperiadeviceandclickSettings>AboutphoneandlookunderModelnumber.

Note:Ifyourdeviceisnotlistedinthedialogthenfearnot.AslongastheFTFfirmwarebundleyouarecreatingincludestheloader.sinfile,thenitcanbeflashed.TheDeviceSelectorisusedtoidentifyadeviceonlyiftheFTFbundledoesnotincludetheloader.sinfile.Iftheloader.sinfileisincludedthentheDeviceSelectorisusedfornamingpurposesonlyanddoesnotaffecttheflashingofthefile.

So,forexample,ifyouhaveaXperiaZ3TabletCompact(whichisnotlistedinFlashtoolatthetimeofpublication)youcouldselectanydeviceandvariantinthelistandtheFTFfirmwarefilecanstillbeflashed(aslongastheloader.sinfileisincludedinthebundle,whichiswhatwerecommendbelowanyway).



Nowinputthebrandingandfirmwareversionnumberintotheappropriateboxes.YoushouldknowthesedetailsfromtheactualfirmwareyoudownloadedfromXperiFirmearlier.



HighlightallofthefilesinthefolderlistandclicktherightarrowtomovethemallintotheFirmwarecontentframe.ClickCreate.

FlashtoolwillnowstartcreatingyourFTFfirmwarefile.Youshouldseeaprogressbarasseenbelow.



OnceyourFTFfirmwarefilehasbeencompiledyouwillseethefollowingmessage.

ToensuretheFTFfirmwarefilehasbeencreated,youcannavigatetothefollowinglocationonyourPC:C:\Users\[YourPCName]\.flashTool\firmwares

NowthattheFTFfirmwarefilehasbeencreated,youneedtoflashyourSonyXperiadevice.ClickonthelightningboltinthetopleftofFlashtooltoFlashdevice.



SelectFlashmodeandclickOK.

SelectthefirmwarebuildversionthatyouwanttoflashfromtheFirmwarepane.Ifyouwanttoretainyourapps/data,untickDATAintheWipepane.ThenclickFlash.



Flashtoolwillthenindicatethatitispreparingfilesforflashing.

Youmayhavetowaitaround60secondsforthepopupbelowtoappear.Onceitdoes,youshouldnowconnectyourSonyXperiadevice.MakesurethedeviceispoweredoffandthenholdthevolumedownbuttonwhilstconnectingtheUSBcable.Oncethepopupdisappearsandflashinghasstarted,youcanletgoofthevolumedownbutton.



NOTE:IgnoretheinstructionsdisplayedwhichsayspressthebackbuttontheserelatetotheolderSonyEricssonXperiahandsets.

FlashtoolwillthenstartflashingyourXperiadevice.OnceyouseeFlashingfinishedasindicatedbelow,yourSonyXperiahasbeensuccessfullyflashed.
