ABOUT KRAV MAGA & KRAV MAGA GLOBALImi Lechtenfeld - Founder of Krav Maga

* Krav Maga was developed by Imi Lechtenfeld (1910-1998). Imi was born into a Jewish family in Hungary, and as a young man was a champion boxer, wrestler and gymnast.

* In the 1930s the Jewish community faced increasing violence and Imi was involved in frequent street fights to protect himself, his family and community.

* He escaped Hungary prior to WWII and after fighting for the allies he ended up in Palestine and subsequently became the head combat instructor for the Israeli Defence forces overseing the training of both the ordinary population (compulsory military) and special forces units.

* In the 1970s he left the army and set about developing and spreading Krav Maga as a civilian self defence system, utilising his knowledge and experience in real self defence and training of ordinary people in the army.

Eyal Yanilov - Founder of Krav Maga Global

Eyal Yanilov began Krav Maga with Imi when he was 14 years old. He quickly became a star pupil and confidant of Imi. He supported Imi in developing and spreading the system as head instruc-tor under Imi.

In 2010 Eyal established Krav Maga Global as his personal organisation to further advance and spread Krav Maga around the world. With over 40-years experience in Krav Maga Eyal, is rec-ognised as the foremost living Krav Maga Master.

TECHNIQUES & TACTICSComprehensive Syllabus

Here’s some broad categories of what our curriculum covers:

* Counter-attacking strikes (hand and feet); * Defences vs unarmed strikes; * Defences vs grabs and holds (wrist, shirt, chokes, headlocks, bearhugs, etc) * Defences vs armed threats (knife, pistol * Defences vs armed strikes (knife, stick, stone, etc); * Techniques and tactics to avoid and/or de-escalate trouble without “fighting” * Techniques and tactics vs multiple attackers

International Syllabus

Our syllabus is international - all our clubs in over 60-countries use the same syllabus. It doesn’t matter what country you’re in you will learn the same tech-niques in the same way.

This has been refined over many decades to ensure it Covers all the things you may need to keep safe, works in practice.

Kids broadly learn the same techniques as adults but the teaching style is very playful and we emphasise an approach to de-escalating and escaping trouble without fighting so kids keep safe without getting in trouble.

The syllabus pretty much covers anything you can think of broken into lev-els. The first level cover the most common things you need and takes about 6-months to learn in full. You can partake in “gradings” like in traditional mar-tial arts to test your mastery of the techniques and tactics.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONINGGet Fit Fast

Krav Maga classes are a great way to get fit. You will work hard but be fully engaged so its a much better way to get fit than conventional gym classes.

Each class starts with a warm-up and standard type exercises. This is followed by pad drills. This is where we train counter attacking strikes (kicks and hand strikes).

We train these strikes in combinations on kick shields, Thai Pads and Focus Mitts. These drills are very fun and high energy to get you fit fast as well as building coordination.

Key Differences to Combat Sports and Martial Arts

To the untrained eye these drills might look like kick boxing, boxing or martial arts, but there are a number of key differences:

* We need to be able to make hand strikes without gloves;* We need to be able to counter-attack to all directions * We must be able to beat a bigger, stronger attacker;* There may be more than one attacker;* The attacker(s) may be armed.

So everything we do is based on trying to prepare for reality and we are only interested in techniques that are practical and effective.

MENTAL CONDITIONING

Develop Your Mental Capabilities

Developing your ability to operate under stress and act in unfamiliar and dynamic situations is an important element in staying safe. Our training is designed to develop these abilities.

The most common response for untrained people when attacked is to freeze which is reaction we must be able to overcome.

In Krav Maga we have many drills that help to increase your ability to respond quickly and effectively from a position of surprise and/or disadvantage.

Benefit Other Aspects of Your Life

Our training also develops determination, resilience and self confi-dence. This not only benefits you in self defence but in other aspects of your life.

KRAV MAGA FOR WOMENOur club has a high percentage of women who enjoy Krav Maga for the self defence and fitness benefits. Krav Maga is par-ticularly relevant to women both because of the need to protect yourself and the fact Krav Maga works well for women.

Women in New Zealand are still highly likely to experience sexual harassment or sexual assault. Moreover, New Zealanders love to travel and you are especially vulnerable when traveling. With a good grounding in Krav Maga your will have less fear, increased confidence and independence.

Krav Maga works well because it is not based on strength or size. Instead counter attacking is targets vulnerable points so a woman can beat a larger stronger man. Moreover, you will also learn how to avoid and de-escalate trouble without fighting. Assertiveness is a key part of self defence and it is much more meaningful having the skills to back-up words with actions.
