Preface

Confession, in the Coptic Orthodox Chruch, isthe only pronounced part of the whole processof repentance. The confessor repents rst in pri-vate before God, then exposes his sins before ananointed priest1. Before confessing, the confes-sor has to pass through the following:

1. Self-examination, during which the personidenties his failures and successes.

2. Self-blaming for distorting the image of manwhom God has created upon HIS likeness.

1A priest whom God has appointed to manage the

sacrement of confession

3

4

3. Confessing and repenting before God, ask-ing His forgiveness and grace to supporthim further in his spiritual strife.

4. Heading towards the church while recall-ing: I have sinned against heaven andbefore you. Finally exposing his/her sinsand iniquities before the priest, asking forguidance.

May the Lord Compensate the beloved fatherElijah Shoukri for preparing that booklet to guidethe confessor and aid him in oering a true re-pentance and a truthful confession, for many arethose who confess without repenting and thosewho do not know how to confess. The Lordblesses each and every work for the glory of HisName.

Now I seek Your mercy and love, for Yourmercies are boundless; You never turn back asinner who comes back to You. I confess thatmy mind is burdened with sin and that I haveno strength left. Do not turn away from me, donot rebuke me in Your anger nor chasten me inYour hot displeasure. I am worn out, have com-passion upon me, O' Lord do not judge me inYour justice, but according to Your mercy. Re-member Your creation, do not put me on trial,
