Historical Note

The International Stewards Association was founded in 1901 as a national professional organization forstewards. The International Stewards Association (ISA) merged with the Caterers Association in 1932and the organization assumed the name International Stewards and Caterers Association (ISCA). Theorganization again changed its name to Executive Stewards and Caterers Association (ESCA) in 1957 andadopted the current name International Food Service Executives Association (IFSEA) in 1976. The IFSEAis a nonprofit professional organization that provides its members with educational courses and certificationopportunities related to the food service and hospitality industries. Members include restaurateurs, caterers,executive chefs, equipment manufacturers, food suppliers, students, and emerging professionals. IFSEAholds an annual convention and has partnered with the United States Military since the 1960s.

1901 Members of the Detroit, Michigan Steward's Club(formed in 1900) meet in Buffalo, NY for thepurpose of organizing a national association.

1905 International Stewards Association (ISA) isincorporated under the state laws of Illinois.

1911 ISA establishes the first Stewards Training Schoolin Indianapolis, Indiana.

1915 Detroit Convention publishes a yearbook and thefirst history of the Association.

1919 International President John R. Dignan (Chicagobranch) sets the stage for a show in Chicago billedby the Chicago newspapers as "the greatest hotelexposition ever held." This is the forerunner of anevent held every year in Chicago by the NationalRestaurant Association.

1921 The Association magazine is titled "InternationalSteward" (later renamed HOTLINE).Proposes constitutional amendments that wouldpermit women in ISA and establish a DeathBenefit Fund for widows.

1927 Denver branch urges the establishment of acatering industry school in every city where thereis a branch of the Association.Thomas Phelps Jones in the annual President'sMessage calls for legislation to require all cannedgoods to be stamped with date of canning.A merger is proposed between the ISA and theAmerican Caterers Association.

1932 The merger is completed and the InternationalStewards and Caterers Association (IS&CA) isincorporated, again under the laws of the state ofIllinois.

1937 President William A. Heaman re-designs theAssociation emblem, which has the hands at allpoints of the compass.

1942 The Rochester Branch celebrates its thirdanniversary by honoring its founder Peter GustEconomou.

1957 The name is changed to the Executive Stewardsand Caterers Association (ESCA).

1960 The name is changed to the Food ServiceExecutives Association (FSEA).

1976 The name is changed to the International FoodService Executives Association (IFSEA).

Scope and Contents Note

The International Food Service Executive Association (IFSEA) records are comprised of organizationalrecords from 1916 to 2010. Included are meeting programs, minutes, menus, conference reports andproceedings, financial reports, newsletters, award certificates, scrapbooks, and stewards and caterers recordsfocusing on the hospitality and food service industry. Materials are from both national and regional branchesof the organization and include records from the United States Military whom IFSEA has partnered withsince the 1960s. Club artifacts and trophies also form part of the collection.
