The South West Coast Path is an epic trip around the South West peninsula of England Holding a National Trail status it is a big part of the move to make the whole coast of England walkable
Coming it at a whopping 630 miles in total walking the route in one outing is not something that everyone can do so we have split the South West Coast Path into walkable sections varying from 4 to 10 days We have also broken it down where possible to make some sections easier or more challenging depending on your walking ability
The route is a big favourite at Macs HQ with many staff members having walked sections fallen in love with the climate the cuisine the natural beauty and the wonderful little towns along the way

All about the South West Coast Path
Route amp Terrain
The path dips to accommodate every river mouth along the route which makes it fairly undulating Were you to walk the full 630 miles it is estimated that the amount of climbing is equivalent to four times the height of Mt Everest However donrsquot let this put you off There may be some ups and downs on the trail but the paths are excellent and well maintained We generally grade the routes as moderate which means that as long as you have a little bit of prior long distance walking experience or are pretty fit then you will have no problem at all
navigation
Although the route is very well waymarked and much of it follows a well laid out path (and we provide you with a guidebook and a map) it is always highly recommended that you are a competent navigator especially if the weather takes a turn for the worse
The South West Coast path began as a path for coastguards to keep a look out for smugglers As they needed to look down into each bay and cove the paths hugged the coastline providing amazing views and a path that meanders along the cliff tops In 1978 it was given National Trail status and is now maintained by a dedicated team
Climate Accommodation amp Bag transfer
climate amp time of year
The South West Coast Path has a glorious
summer season People flock to this part
of England in the summer for its glorious
beaches long warm summer nights and
relaxed pace of life However this does not
always go hand in hand with walking
You can walk the South West Coast Path
any time from March to October however
the summer months while glorious can
be too warm for walking and many of the
accommodations sell out early
Our favourite time to walk the path is from
April-June when the wildflowers paint the
path in a riot of colour or in September
when the area is quieter and the autumn
colours are beginning to turn

how to get to the south west coast path
By Train
Getting to the South West by train is really easy The famous Great Western Railway stretches from London down to Penzance with many starting points on the SWCP easily accessible by branch lines
By Bus
Many starting points are accessible by a combination of bus and train Taking the train to a central point then a local coach will take you the rest of the way Buses are quick reasonably priced and efficient way to link up your journey on the South West Coast Path
By Plane
Arriving to the South West of England the closest airports are Exeter and Newquay however if you are coming from- abroad we would suggest flying into London and taking the train It is the easiest way to travel
food and drink
Local Specialities
You will pass through four counties on the South West Coast Path each of them famous for their own regional specialities although there is a lot of crossover between them
In Somerset where the trail begins the big local specialities are cider and cheese Try some fresh cloudy Scrumpy or more refined gentrified cider with layers of flavour For cheese try some cave Matured Cheddar from Cheddar Gorge or Barbers 1833 Vintage Reserve Cheddar
Devon is a dairy heaven Their cheese cream and ice cream are all highly rated particularly the clotted cream Also Plymouth Gin has been made here since 1793 and can easily contend with any of the modern craft gins
Cornwall is famed for its pasties Cornish pasties are a mix of potato suede onion and beef neatly wrapped in crimped pastry This pocket size wonder is a great snack to eat on your walks
Cornwall is also famed for its cream and cheese battling Devon for the crown It is down to you guys to eat as much clotted cream and ice cream as possible to decide whose is the best We would recommend trying some Cornish Yarg a cheese wrapped in nettles which has a delicious creamy taste
Dorset is famed for its unique Portland Lamb which takes longer to mature leading to a delicate silky smooth meat Also you cant avoid Dorset Apple Cake which you should of course eat with a great dollop of clotted cream
Eating and Drinking on the Route
The South West Coast Path is strewn with fantastic restaurants pubs and cafeacutes so much so that it is often difficult to choose where to eat at night Being coastal much of the local produce is based on seafood but there are plenty of other options should this not be to your taste
For a more detailed look at food and drink you can visit our dedicated blog post

training for a walking holiday
Most of the sections on the South West Coast Path have multiple itineraries meaning that you can take it a little easier or push through in less time if you are an experienced walker If you are not planning on walking the full coast path you can choose from sections which would fit into a long weekend or that fit into a week
All of the routes are either graded moderate or moderate to strenuous which means that you will need a good level of fitness to get the most enjoyment from walking the route
Walking yourself fit is a form of exercise pretty enjoyable to do It is
reasonably low impact gets you out and about helps lose weight
(should you need to) and is generally just a lovely thing to do
When it comes to booking your South West Coast Path adventure be honest with your tour specialist Ask for their advice about the right trip for you A hiking holiday is meant to be enjoyable and there are a variety of different options to choose from to suit a range of fitness level Contact a member of the team on infomacsadventurecom for further information
SQUEEZE IN EXTRA WALKING
- Switch all of or part of your work commute Park further away from the office get off the train at the increasingly earlier stops or use public transport in the morning then walk home in the evening
- When catching up with your friends or family invite them for a walk Bring them a takeaway coffee (in a reusable cup of course) and turn the countryside or local park into your moving cafeacute
- Use your lunch breaks to go for short walks
- You will need to get used to carrying a rucksack so for your walks switch your work baghandbag for your rucksack
- Itrsquos not a task Walking is fun great for the mind and body

Which Section Should I WalkHere at Macs Adventure we have split the whole South West Coast Path into manageable chunks so that you can fit different sections into your different timeframes The section that is for you would depend on what you want to see and do While many offer the same outstanding scenery and coastal wonder there are a few sections that differ depending on food preference highlights or simply just the length of time it takes For more indepth information on this you can read our blog - South West Coastal Path Walks - Which One is For Me
How Far in Advance Do I Need to BookWe suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as the South West Coast Path can get really busy especially during the summer months You will find up to date availability on our website and we will always try and accommodate your plans
How Fit Do I Need To BeWe offer a range of routes and often multiple itineraries on each so you can choose your preferred daily distance Hopefully you will find an itinerary that suits your preferred level of activity If you currently donrsquot enjoy an active lifestyle we suggest regular walking in hilly terrain supplemented by cardiovascular exercise for at least six months before your walk A good gym or personal trainer will be able to draw up a personalised training programme For a more precise idea about fitness read our blog post - How Fit Should I Be for the South West Coast Path
What is the AscentDescent Like on the TripThe story is that if you walk the entire route then you will have ascended the equivalent of summiting Mt Everest four times This makes the route sound impossible but all together it is not that bad There are some short sharp shocks (Golden Cap on the Lyme Regis to Poole section) and some drawn out slogs (like Little Hangman on the Minehead to Westward Ho section) The walking does involve dropping down from the clifftops into the towns and villages and then obviously climbing back up out of them However with a decent level of fitness you will get through this no problem at all and as always the views from the top are well worth it

Where Can I Find Scenery From the Poldark SeriesThe BBC has brought Winston Grahamrsquos Poldark series to life and much of it is filmed in the Cornwall area Many of the beautiful beaches and little coves from the series are available to visit on the South West Coast Path as well as many of the mines and towns used in the filming of the series We have a blog post all about this if you want more information Just check out - A Guide to Exploring Poldarkrsquos Cornwall
What Personal Equipement Do I NeedYou will need good walking shoesboots (ideally waterproof) comfortable walking clothes waterproof jacket and trousers a daypack and hatsgloves etc You can see a full kit list and some hints and tips on our blog post - What Should I Pack for
the South West Coast P
When is the Best Time of YearOur particular favourite time of year is Spring so from late March to early June as many different wildflowers begin to appear along the clifftops There is also an enchanting soft light at this time of year which adds to the spectacle of the route
The summer months can be warm and the towns along the route are full of life but it can be a bit busy for some peoples tastes Also availability is a bit tighter during the summer months so if you are booking for this period early booking is recommended
Autumn brings warm seas and a more relaxed atmosphere Surfers hang on from the summer to catch the warmer autumn waves and the whole region just has this air of winding down and relaxing

training for a walking holiday

The South West Coast path began as a path for coastguards to keep a look out for smugglers As they needed to look down into each bay and cove the paths hugged the coastline providing amazing views and a path that meanders along the cliff tops In 1978 it was given National Trail status and is now maintained by a dedicated team

climate amp time of year
The South West Coast Path has a glorious
summer season People flock to this part
of England in the summer for its glorious
beaches long warm summer nights and
relaxed pace of life However this does not
always go hand in hand with walking
You can walk the South West Coast Path
any time from March to October however
the summer months while glorious can
be too warm for walking and many of the
accommodations sell out early
Our favourite time to walk the path is from
April-June when the wildflowers paint the
path in a riot of colour or in September
when the area is quieter and the autumn
colours are beginning to turn

training for a walking holiday

What is the AscentDescent Like on the TripThe story is that if you walk the entire route then you will have ascended the equivalent of summiting Mt Everest four times This makes the route sound impossible but all together it is not that bad There are some short sharp shocks (Golden Cap on the Lyme Regis to Poole section) and some drawn out slogs (like Little Hangman on the Minehead to Westward Ho section) The walking does involve dropping down from the clifftops into the towns and villages and then obviously climbing back up out of them However with a decent level of fitness you will get through this no problem at all and as always the views from the top are well worth it

the South West Coast P
When is the Best Time of YearOur particular favourite time of year is Spring so from late March to early June as many different wildflowers begin to appear along the clifftops There is also an enchanting soft light at this time of year which adds to the spectacle of the route
The summer months can be warm and the towns along the route are full of life but it can be a bit busy for some peoples tastes Also availability is a bit tighter during the summer months so if you are booking for this period early booking is recommended
Autumn brings warm seas and a more relaxed atmosphere Surfers hang on from the summer to catch the warmer autumn waves and the whole region just has this air of winding down and relaxing

climate amp time of year
The South West Coast Path has a glorious
summer season People flock to this part
of England in the summer for its glorious
beaches long warm summer nights and
relaxed pace of life However this does not
always go hand in hand with walking
You can walk the South West Coast Path
any time from March to October however
the summer months while glorious can
be too warm for walking and many of the
accommodations sell out early
Our favourite time to walk the path is from
April-June when the wildflowers paint the
path in a riot of colour or in September
when the area is quieter and the autumn
colours are beginning to turn

we are providing the very best for our
customers
Please note that in the summer months the
route gets very busy as the holidaymakers

recommend booking up as far in advance

how to get to the south west coast path

The summer months can be warm and the towns along the route are full of life but it can be a bit busy for some peoples tastes Also availability is a bit tighter during the summer months so if you are booking for this period early booking is recommended

how to get to the south west coast path

- Itrsquos not a task Walking is fun great for the mind and body

training for a walking holiday

What is the AscentDescent Like on the TripThe story is that if you walk the entire route then you will have ascended the equivalent of summiting Mt Everest four times This makes the route sound impossible but all together it is not that bad There are some short sharp shocks (Golden Cap on the Lyme Regis to Poole section) and some drawn out slogs (like Little Hangman on the Minehead to Westward Ho section) The walking does involve dropping down from the clifftops into the towns and villages and then obviously climbing back up out of them However with a decent level of fitness you will get through this no problem at all and as always the views from the top are well worth it

training for a walking holiday
