Abstract The University of Chicago's Student Government advocates for studentissues in cooperation with the governing bodies of university facultyand administration. During the mid- to late-twentieth century, StudentGovernment was active in campus programming, funded studentorganizations, participated in national student groups, and supported thestudent body's involvement with political and social issues. This collectionincludes administrative and procedural records of Student Government,Student-Faculty Administration Court documents, and publicationsand ephemera related to student organizations, political activities, andsocial service. As well as recording the activities and functions of StudentGovernment, this collection includes documentation of student groups,campus events, and the relationship of the student body to political and socialmovements of the 1950s-1970s.

Access
Series III: Subseries 2 contains budget material for funds allocated by the Committee onRegistered Student Organizations (CORSO) to registered student organizations. This materialspans the years 1964-1978, and is restricted for a period of fifty years.
The remainder of the collection is open for research, with no restrictions.

The University of Chicago's Student Government advocates for student issues in cooperationwith the governing bodies of university faculty and administration. As outlined in itsConstitution, the goals of Student Government are "To further the interests and promotethe welfare of the students at the University of Chicago; to foster a University community; torepresent the body more effectively before University authorities and the community at large."Student Government also oversees the funding of registered student organizations.
During the mid- to late-twentieth century, Student Government was active in campus programssuch as foreign student exchanges, orientation events and speakers' series. Student Governmentalso advocated for academic freedom and other civil liberties issues of concern to students. Inthe 1960s and 1970s, Student Government was a source of support for students protesting theVietnam War, working in the civil rights movement, and serving the Hyde Park, Kenwood andWoodlawn communities.
Scope Note
This collection includes administrative and procedural records of Student Government, Student-Faculty Administration Court documents, and publications and ephemera related to nationalstudent organizations, political movements and social issues. As well as recording the activitiesand functions of Student Government, this collection includes documentation of student groups,campus events, and the relationship of the student body to political and social movements of the1950s-1970s.
Series I: General Files, is organized by subject and span the years 1949-1979. Subjects relateto areas such as government proceedings, student activities and events, and political and socialissues at both the campus and national level. Organizational and governmental documents suchas meeting minutes, reports, statements, resolutions, and bills are found in this series, as arecorrespondence, publications, promotional material, and documents related to campus eventsand programming.
Series II: National Student Association, documents the relationship between StudentGovernment and the NSA, a confederated group of student governments, from the late 1940sto late 1970s. Much of this series consists of correspondence and organizational material relatedto the planning of NSA assemblies and NSA-sponsored programming at University of Chicago.Also included are NSA publications and promotional material.
Series III: Committee on Recognized Student Organizations, contains records kept by CORSO,a committee of Student Government that allocated funding to registered student organizations.This series is divided into two subseries. Subseries 1: Subject Files, is arranged alphabetically andcontains administrative records of CORSO, correspondence, and material related to studentgroups and campus events. Subseries 2: Budget Material, contains budget requests from student

groups, budget allocations by CORSO, and some material related to budget decisions. Bothsubseries span the 1960s-1970s.
Series IV: Student-Faculty Administration Court, contains records spanning the years1951-1976. Most of the material relates to court cases in which Student Government orstudent organizations were involved. This series is arranged chronologically, and includescourt documents such as briefs, summons, and decisions, as well as correspondence and othersupporting material.
