In this module, you will learn about the prominent features of the vocal and instrumental music of East Asian countries (Japan, China, and Korea).

How the music of Japan, China, and Korea reflect the different aspects of East Asian culture through its timbre, rhythm, melody, texture, and form/ style

and the different cultural and musical practices of Japan, China, and Korea as expressed through their feelings towards each other, to the environment,

their history and culture.

Instrumental Music of Japan

Traditional Japanese music is basically meditative in character. Its

performance is highly ritualized, as much in the music itself, as in the composure of the musicians when performing it. Japanese chamber and solo music have a slow

meditative pace.

The performance of Japanese music has traditionally been of a spiritual character, similarly to martial arts and other forms of art such as the tea ceremony

and calligraphy. It is usually about religious festivals, work, dance, love, and regional songs. Audiences are looking for this self-mastery in musicians. This is the reason

why music has become highly ritualized. Musicians must show this spiritual self-

mastery in their performance and composure. They work on an inner strength in mastering his or her instrument, more than simply perfecting a technique of some

sort and providing entertainment.

Japanese Musical Instrument Percussion Instrument (Membranophone)

1. Odaiko (big drum) – the physical energy and sheer excitement of an odaiko performance is an integral

part of many Japanese Matsuri(festivals).

2. Tsuzumi (hourglass-shape)-

there are two varieties, the smaller kotsuzumi and the larger otsuzumi.

They are used in both noh and kabuki performances. The

kotsuzumi is held on the right shoulder and the player alters the tone by squeezing the laces. The otsuzumi is placed on the left

thigh. Like all other traditional arts in Japan, there are several

schools of tsuzumi matsuri (festivals)

3. Tsuridaiko – a large hanging barrel drum

4. Taiko – is a Japanese drum that comes in various sizes and

is used to play a variety of musical genres. It has become particularly popular in recent years as the central

instrument of percussion ensembles whose repertory is

based on a variety of folk and festival music of the past

String instruments (chordophone)

1. Koto – is a 13-string zither, about two meters long and made

of Paulownia wood. It is plucked using

picks on the thumb and the first two fingers on the right hand, while the left

hand can be used to modify pitch and tone. Koto is used in an ensemble in

gagaku or as a solo instrument.

2. Shamisen – is a plucked stringed

instrument. Its construction follows a

model similar to that of a guitar or a banjo, employing a

neck and strings, stretched across a resonating body. The neck of the shamisen is fretless and is

slimmer than that of a guitar or a banjo.

3. Biwa – is a Japanese short-necked fretted

lute, often used in narrative

storytelling. The biwa is the chosen

instrument of

Benten, the goddess of music, eloquence, poetry, and education in Japanese Shinto

Introduction

In this Learning Activity Kit, you will learn about countries in East Asia such as Japan, China, and Korea. These countries have a lot in common in

terms of art production, tradition and principle of arts which are influenced by their history, beliefs, religion, location, culture, and dynasty.

In the previous lessons, you learned about the folk arts of Southeast

Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei). You also learned how their fascinating art works were influenced

by the historical and cultural phenomena in the world of art. The past lessons also tackled how the distinct characteristics of their

art works are reflected in the wide array of exquisite textiles, crafts,

What sports are you engage in? How does it feel to emerge as a winner in such

sports? Engaging yourself into sports are practices that can make you physically fit.

As an athlete, training is important as it requires you to improve your physical fitness

so as to perform at your best. After all, we aim to achieve our goal and that is to Win the game. It really feels good as you experience winning in such sports right? But of

course, Win or Lose, you must remember that it’s your experience that also counts and have a positive attitude to accept losing and know that you did your best.

A team sport is an activity in which a group of individuals, on the same team,

work together to accomplish an ultimate goal which is usually to win. Team sports

rely on all of the players working together equally in order to succeed at the task at

hand. Being part of a team sport requires that each athlete has patience and

perseverance since the goals put forth to accomplish might take some time to meet.

This involves a good deal of dedication, hard work, and good leadership over that

span of time.

Basketball is a team sports. It is played by two competing teams. The

objective of the game is to score in the opponent’s basket and prevent the other team from scoring. The basket that is attacked by a team is the opponent’s basket. The

basket which is defended by a team is the team own’ s basket. The team that has scored the greater number of points at the end of playing time shall be the winner

- The objective is to shoot a ball through a basket to score points while following

a set of rules.

- 2 teams of five players play

- A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket during

regular play. - A field goal scores two points for the shooting team if a player is touching or

closer to the basket than the three point line, and three points if the player is

behind the three point line. - The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional

time (overtime) may be issued when the game ends with a draw.

- The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it while walking or

running(dribbling) or throwing (passing) it to a team mate.

History of the game Basketball

- Invented by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James

Naismith in December 1891, at Young Men’s Christian association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

- At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous

recreation suitable for indoor winter play. Team had nine players, and the

goals were wooden peach basket affixed to the walls. - By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread

nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women

and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. - The first pro league, the National Basketball League, was formed in 1898 to

protect players from exploitation and to promote a less rough game. This

league only lasted five years before disbanding; its demise spawned a number of loosely organized leagues throughout the northeastern united states.

- One of the first and greatest pro teams was the Original Celtics, organized

about 1915 in New York City. They played as many as 150 games a season and dominated basketball until 1936.

- In 1949 two subsequent professional leagues, the National Basketball League

(formed in 1937) and Basketball Association of America (1946) merged to create the National Basketball association (NBA)

- In 1959, a Basketball Hall of fame was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Its rosters include the names of great players, coaches, referees, and people

who have contributed significantly to the development of the game. -

Acknowledgment

The Schools Division of Zambales would like to express its heartfelt gratitude

to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to the successful

preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and distribution of the

Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all learning areas across grade

levels as a response to providing the learners with developmentally-appropriate,

contextualized and simplified learning resources with most essential learning

competencies (MELCs)-based activities anchored on the principles of guided learning

and explicit instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the writers

and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting their best efforts

to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the implementation of learning

delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout evaluators

making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for having carefully

evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly extending its

financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of these learning resources

for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close coordination with

the school heads, for their weekly distribution and retrieval of the GLAKs and for

their frequent monitoring of the learners’ progress through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the learners

the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish the tasks and for

gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would not be

possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to serving our

Zambaleño learners.
