Selection and use of images on Web pages: Customers with some usage needs

• The process of learning begins with the formation of images in the subconscious.• Images can

• Give precision to thoughts and insight to knowledge• Give directions to learning, and• Define creative Structure for teaching and learning.• Images are

• Agents of emotions, and • Facilitator of powerful emotions.

• What the literatures have to say• Conclusion.

Analysis: Different types of Images, selections and problems in selections for webpages.• Graphs, photographs, Charts, drawings, words/letters, sounds, colors, and

etc are image types.• Selection of images for Creative Design Production and Sales.• Lit1: Problems plaguing webpage design are:

• Inability to identify and select the appropriate images for particular purposes and contexts of use,

• poor organization of images for web page presentations• rendering the images: perspectives and color compositions• images too flat and static to communicate life, and• inappropriate matching of images and information they carry. (Siebert 2013)

Methodology: The steps in accomplishing this project are listed as:• Viewed some webpages to identify how they appeal to me and

some other users in terms of:• Colors and color renderings,• pictures and arrangements,• From the literatures , (particularly, Siebert 2013), • I analyzed the problems that were identified, • considering solution from Assignment #3 in CMPT 840 on• color issues and cultural issues

• Constraints: time is the major constraining factor and cultural issues.

Things considered in Images selections for webpages:

• Considered:• audience the web page need to satisfy• the purpose of the web page • image combination requirements• allocation and deallocation of images• image reuse.

Furthermore,

• identified expected information content of the web page,• determined the image requirements such as:• Types, e.g., graphs for reporting some experiments• Combinations, e.g., pie charts and graphs in financial

reports• Relationships, e.g., relevance to the key features.• Rendering, color blending to avoid cultural issues.

• choice of image: what is the main focus of the webpage?• Related the images with the main focus of the organization.

Design/Results: Consider 1:Cultural Issues with images:• Images are used in representing persons, animals, and things, but in

various cultures, their preferences to images lean more on their ancestral beliefs. For example,• animals are not to be used anyhow E.g., the Celtic mythology for fertility –

pig. In many cultures, pig symbolizes filth.• Gender significance attached to images, gender sensitive images are avoided. • Combinations of images, this allowed the use of some images to qualify

others.

Color Issues in Image rendering:

• Colors are part of images that promote presentation and attractions.• Colors are viewed in terms of:• The blending/rendering• Cultural recognitions (e.g., for Chinese, black color if for young males, but to a

Nigerian, black depicts mourning; Red is used in marriage for Chinese but for some cultures it depict danger, etc.)• The color mixes that produce correct attractions and emotions are prefered.• Plants are used for representations of growth in some settings with green.

Matching side by side poorly rendered webpage with another rendered webpages:

• For the Iranian, the webpage of bestbuy contains blue which depicts mourning

• To Judaism blue depicts holiness, to Chinese, it depicts immortality.

• In my design, outright use of such colors as:• Blue, brown, red, black, grey and white are avoided• Animals as in the second webpage are avoided.• Choice of colors that will universal acceptance was

difficult.• My major choice was to blend/mix colors in such a

way as to drown the conspicuousness of the abhorred colors.

Example webpage is Best-Buy Home page:

Design/Results

• The sample webpages that are designed here are related to Creative Productions and Sales:• Identified the colors that are universally accepted such as:• Gold, pink, blends of green, yellow, purple, etc.

• The images that can be used include:• Flowers, horse, babies, computer, other models that facilitate powerful

emotions.• The presentations of these images on the webpage considered placement of

related images with blending colors to give the presentation an irresistible attractions.

A webpage: What defined the image content? The central consideration here is BABIES:The major considerations are• toys and types of the toys,• colors of the toys,• Affordability of the toys, and • specific age ranges for specific toys. The context of use, such as:• The environment of the groups of babies,• The knowledge base• The genders of the babies• The cultural values of the parents/relations.

Personal learning skills using media system• Considering the

• Motivation (e.g., intuition or curiosity)

• age range

• Knowledge base

• Cognitive issues related to learning

• The user contexts and contexts of use:• Provided programmed instructions• Provide response prompt to enable

interactions• Provide self assessment and evaluation• Reward (e.g, Congratulation!!!)• The color presentations for instructions,

prompt, self assessment, and evaluation., and finally, reward.
