Help a Family Have a
Merry Christmas!! Our Center will be
sponsoring a family for
Christmas this year. Due to
illness and the economy,
the father has been out of
work and the mother is ill.
They have 2 lovely little girls ages 1 and 7. We would like
to see this family have a nice Christmas. We are asking for your help. Please bring a gift or
donation and the staff will try to purchase what they need.
If you have any questions call the Center at 335-4555 and
ask to speak to Cathy. She has the sizes for the family and
she can let you know what is on their wish list.
Lets help someone not as fortunate as we are.

Don't Forget Jesus Christmas is a special time
To reflect on Jesus Christ,
The wonder of His lowly birth
Brings meaning to our lives
There really is no other reason,
We celebrate this day,
The birth of God's precious son
And the life, He willingly gave
But so much seems to distract us
In the busyness of our lives,
We lose our focus in all the happenings,
Not knowing, we leave out Christ
We lose sight of the true meaning
As we endlessly rush about,
Trying to find that perfect gift,
Seems to cloud our Savior out
We need to stop and reflect awhile,
Remembering our precious Lord,
His birth, His life and sacrifice
And all that He stands for
For though the world may celebrate,
It seems, though, for other reasons,
Let’s keep in mind that Jesus Christ
Is the true meaning of the season. By M.S.Lowndes
Easy-to-Follow Holiday Safety Tips for Seniors Seniors have a lot to contend with when the holidays roll around. Not only do depression and suicide rates rise
during the holidays, but there are all sorts of practical dangers, from house fires caused by Christmas trees to falls on
snow and ice. If you have a senior in your care, or if you’re a senior yourself, you’ll want to be especially mindful of
these five situations to stay safe this holiday season.
Beware of Icy Steps and Walkways
We talked extensively about this important safety tip in a recent blog post. Seniors are at an increased risk of falls
when temps drop below freezing, but keeping the steps and walkway free of snow and ice can go a long way toward
preventing a fall.
Avoid Snow Shoveling Dangers
For healthy, active seniors, snow shoveling can be a good way to get in your daily exercise. But because of the in-
creased risk of a heart attack while shoveling, seniors with a history of heart disease or who are at risk of heart dis-
ease should not shovel under any circumstances. If you want to shovel or perhaps just help a younger loved one with
the shoveling task, bundle up your entire body and face, leaving no exposed skin, in order to prevent frostbite. Take
frequent breaks and stay hydrated. Remember to warm up beforehand with stretching, just as you would for any
exercise. Know the signs of a heart attack and if you begin to feel tightening in your chest, trouble breathing or extreme fatigue, call your doctor immediately.
Follow Christmas Tree and Holiday Decorating Safety
Between 2007 to 2011, U.S. fire departments handled 230 home fires caused by Christmas trees, and another 150
fires related to holiday lights and other decorations involving line voltage, according to the National Fire Protection
Association. Although Christmas tree fires aren’t common, they are some of the most damaging and deadly home
fires, resulting in $18.3 million in property damage annually and a higher percentage of injuries and deaths than other
home fires. To prevent fires, make sure a real tree is kept watered and that needles do not dry out. Remove a dying
tree immediately, even if that means taking it down just a few days after Christmas. Most Christmas tree fires occur
after the holiday. Additionally, use only indoor lights on your tree. LEDs burn cooler than conventional lights,
reducing the risk of fire. Do not use lights with frayed or damaged cords. Finally, make sure your smoke detector is
working and has fresh batteries.
Understand Heating System Safety
Have your oil burner and furnace checked by a professional before you fire it up for the winter. If you rely on space
heaters for supplemental heating during the colder months, make sure to keep these heaters away from upholstery.
Look for a model that is UL-listed to meet safety requirements in the U.S. To avoid overheating or a blown circuit
breaker, do not share the space heater’s electrical outlet with other appliances. Electric heaters are safer than
fuel-based space heaters, and can significantly reduce your heating bills in the coldest months.
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON
Mid-Del Charitable Foundation
Supports FSC.
On 10 November, Cathy and
Renee received a check from the
Mid-Del Charitable Foundation.
On November 10, 2014 at the Harrington Raceway and Casino, representatives from 32 Delaware organizations were awarded financial grants by the Mid-Del Charitable Foundation. The Foundation, developed to consolidate the charitable undertakings of The Delaware State Fair, Inc. and Harrington Raceway, Inc., supports Delaware-based organizations and charitable, educational, and scientific endeavors which address the wide range of issues, including: health and human services, the arts, agriculture, education, and the environment. Members of the Mid-Del Charitable Foundation are proud to award the 32 organizations with funding that will support the community, and provide more opportunities for Delaware citizens. Secretary Bill DiMondi says “We are thankful to be able to contribute to so many community organizations that benefit Delawareans throughout the state.” “We really appreciate what these organizations do for our community and Delaware as a whole” said Howell Wallace, President of the Mid-Del Charitable Foundation. “It is the efforts from these organizations that provide a positive example in the community, and the opportunity to help those in need that make the Foundation a success”.

People Receiving Benefits Will Get an Increase in 2015
(Update from Social Security Website)
Social Security announced that more than 64 million beneficiaries will receive a
1.7 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in their monthly Social Security
and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.
The 1.7 percent increase will begin in January 2015 for the more than 58 million people who
receive Social Security benefits. The more than 8 million people who get SSI payments will see the
increase beginning December 31, 2014.
Other changes that take effect in January of each year are based on the adjustment in average
wages. The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax in 2015 will increase to
$118,500 (up from $117,000). Of the estimated 168 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes
in 2015, about 10 million will pay higher taxes because of the taxable maximum increase.
According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, there will be no increase in the
standard Medicare Part B monthly premium for 2015.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program
HOW CATHOLIC CHARITIES HELPS
The federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps households that
need assistance to pay the cost of home energy.
Catholic Charities has administered this program for over 25 years.
Homeowners and renters, at 200% of federal poverty guidelines, can apply. All heating and cooling sources, including electricity, gas, oil, kerosene, wood, propane, natural gas, and
coal are eligible. Although the program does not pay for all heating costs, it does provide an important financial supplement. Help for home cooling is provided during the summer
months, if funding is available.
Heating assistance applications are processed from October 1 to March 31. Funds from the
federal government do not usually arrive until late December, when energy benefits become
available.

The Frederica Senior Center’s mission is to guide Delaware’s senior into a brighter future. The Center is where seniors
and or persons with disabilities join together for services, activities, socialization and nutritious home cooked meals.
Programs are designed to enhance our seniors dignity, support their independence and encourage involvement in and
with the Center and their local community.
This Membership Guidelines Booklet has been developed to enhance the experience of your participation in the Center
activities and programs. It is the Center’s priority to provide a safe, pleasant, positive, comfortable, enjoyable environ-
ment to our members.
The Center recognizes that some behaviors may distract and disrupt for the enjoyment of the Center. That is why the
following guidelines have been set up by the Board of Directors and Staff Members in order to address any instances
that may occur and disrupt the daily routine and experience at the Center.
We all ask that you carefully read this booklet to become familiar with these guidelines in order to know what is ex-
pected from each and every member of the Frederica Senior Center.
1. Membership is limited by the resources of the Center to individuals who are self mobile, with or without assistance
devices such as wheelchairs or walkers, independent, capable of appropriate decision making, self toileting and have
adequate appearance and hygiene to participate in daily activities. If not independent self mobile members may attend
with a personal assistant.
2. As a member we ask that you promote goodwill. No member shall mistreat, either verbally or physically, any other
member or staff. Mistreatment includes sexual, racial or otherwise harassing comments. Violence of any kind will not
be tolerated and shall result in immediate dismissal from the Center, and membership will be revoked immediately.
3. Members are asked to encourage diversity. Isolation of members based on race, religion, color, sex, national origin,
sexual orientation, and or physical or mental disability shall not be tolerated.
4. The use of illegal drugs or alcohol is not permitted on or in Center property.
5. The rooms and equipment in the Center are for the use of the entire membership and are never for the exclusive use
of any one member. Members are expected to respect and maintain the facility and equipment they use. Members may
be liable for purposeful damage or destruction of any Center property. Use of equipment is at the users own risk.
6. Members are not to use any vulgar or profane language at any time.
7. If at any time a member has a problem of some kind, whether it be with another member, staff member, a program
or procedure in the Center, that member should report their concern to the Executive Director or Staff Member. No
member has the right to approach a guest or group of guests to voice their complaint. Complaining among other mem-
bers will not get the situation resolved but will only bring disharmony into the Center.
8. Any criminal act committed by a member will result in immediate dismissal.
9. Inoculations must not be done in public areas, such as dining room, lobby or kitchen.
The purpose of these guidelines is to allow everyone to richly enjoy their visit to the Center every time they are here.
It is up to each individual member to do their part in order to achieve this goal.
PLEASE DO YOUR PART!
