Choosing your
CourseWhen choosing a course it is importantto find one that is right for you
Some courses may also require:
● A reference from your school, including information aboutyour attendance
● A skills assessment, relevant to the subject area, for examplea practical test
● A literacy and numeracy assessment
Choosing a college and a course is a big decision. The betterinformed you are, the more likely you are to make the rightchoice for you. This will greatly improve your chance ofsuccess at college.
You need to think about where you are now and where youwould like to be in the future. Consider your interests, whatyou enjoy and what you’re good at. Think about how you liketo learn too, as being in college for most of the week justmight not be for you. Ultimately, a lot will depend on thequalifications and experience you already have, so rememberto check the entry requirements of the course you’reinterested in.
Still confused? Check out the chart opposite to see whatyou could do.

A Levelor BTEC?The main difference between these courses is that A Levelsare assessed through examinations with some courseworkmodules, whilst BTEC courses are mostly coursework basedwith some practical assessments or work experience.
Both of these options can be used to progress on to a rangeof opportunities including employment, Apprenticeships, further study programmes or university.
Choosing whether to study an A Level or BTEC programmecan be a tough decision to make, that’s why within somesubject areas, we offer the opportunity to mix and matchA Level, BTEC and GCSE re-take courses to create a broadercombination of qualifications.
The table opposite shows the comparison between BTECand A Level qualifications. When you come in for aninterview with your tutor, you will be able to discuss theappropriate courses for you, based on your expected GCSEresults and plans for the future. Depending on the subjectarea, you may be able to combine a BTEC qualification withA Levels or GCSE qualifications.

A LEVELSA Levels are a two year programme of academic study. The main benefit isthat you can spread your options over a range of subjects, according toyour interests and you can study those subjects in greater depth. If you’replanning on going to university you’ll probably need three or four A Levels, sometimes in specific subjects.
In recent years A Levels have been modular, so you would have sat ASlevel exams at the end of your first year. The AS grade contributed 50% of the final A Level grade with the A2 year accounting for the other 50%.You could also retake the AS level to improve your overall mark.
However, the Government has decided to reform A Levels and move to amore linear system where all exams will take place at the end of thesecond year. 2016:17 will be a transitional year, so you may find that you’llbe studying a blend of linear A Levels (2 year structure) and some modularA Levels with contributing AS level exams in summer 2017. For example,Maths and Further Maths will continue to be delivered as a modular A Level in 2016:17.
To help support you in your selections of courses and understanding ofwhat the study programme may look like, you are advised to speak to amember of the A Level team at an Open Event who will be able to adviseyou further.

maths &englishSurveys repeatedly show that employers are dissatisfied withthe literacy and numeracy skills of school and college leaversand many use these qualifications as a filter in theirrecruitment process. This means that if you can’tdemonstrate that you have the required skills in maths andEnglish, you might not even get an interview.
I won’t need maths and English in my job!
All jobs require a certain level of maths and English skills. For example:
● Construction - you’ll need maths and English skills for measuring up, working out quantities, ordering stockand writing up quotes for customers
● Hairdressing - you’ll need maths and English skills for meeting and greeting customers, booking appointments and calculating the right quantities for mixing colours
● Catering - you’ll need maths and English skills for reading recipes, writing menus, measuring ingredients and calculating cooking times.
Without the appropriate level of maths and English skills, anemployer may not even select you for interview. You must beable to demonstrate on your CV and in a job application thatyou have the skills they need. You will limit the progressionopportunities within your job role if you have poor maths andEnglish skills - you might not be able to get that promotion ifyou can’t prove that you can manage that level ofresponsibility.
It’s not just about work - it’s about your confidence andability to use maths and English skills in everyday life anddecisions you need to take.
QUALIFICATIONS IN MATHS ANDENGLISH AREWHAT EMPLOYERSDEMAND. THEY ARE THEMOST IMPORTANTVOCATIONALSKILLS YOU CAN HAVE
19
In response to the concerns about poor skills in maths andEnglish, the Government has made a commitment to helpraise standards. If you fail to achieve a good pass - grade C orabove - in Maths or English GCSE by the time you finishsecondary school you must continue to study the subjects inpost-16 education until you get these qualifications.
What does this mean for me?
● Once you receive your GCSE results, if you have not achieved a grade C in Maths or English we will enrol you on an additional course to allow you to progress your skills. This won’t prevent you from continuing with your main qualification, you will study your Maths and English alongside it.
● You only need to continue with the subject thatyou haven’t achieved a grade C in, so for exampleif you achieved a grade C in English, but a D in Maths, you would only need to continue studying Maths.
● Depending on your GCSE result, you may be able to re-take your GCSE or a functional skills course may be more appropriate. Functional skills develop your abilityto use maths and English in a range of contexts and to transfer these skills from one situation to another.
● Even if you have achieved a grade C or above, all of our courses will develop your maths and English skills and embed them within the vocational area, so that you can see how important they are to working life.
● Extra support for maths and English is available.
How does the College know how to help me?
● When you enrol at college you may be asked to take aninitial assessment on your maths and English skills.
● It is really important that you focus on completingthis assessment to the best of your ability.
● The results of this initial assessment and your previous grades gained from school will tell us which qualifications and what support you will need to further develop your individual maths and English skills.
The College will continue to offer you careers guidanceand invite you to attend progression events throughoutyour studies so that we can support you in takingdecisions for further study, training and employment. 75

What are employability skills?
During your career it is likely that you will hold jobs with avariety of employers and move across different employmentsectors. We all need to be flexible in our working patternsand be prepared to change jobs and/or sectors if we believethere are better opportunities elsewhere. In order to beflexible we need a set of transferable skills that are notspecific to one particular career path, but are genericacross all employment sectors.
Employability Skills can be defined as the transferable skillsneeded by an individual to make them ‘employable’. Alongwith good technical understanding and subject knowledge, employers often outline a set of skills that they want from anemployee. These skills are what they believe will equip theemployee to carry out their role to the best of their ability.
