UAE fertilizer industry grows by 51% in thelast decade, says GPCAAt 5 million tons, the UAE's fertilizer market hasgrown by more than 50% in the last ten years, according to the Gulf Petrochemicals andChemicals Association (GPCA).

“Despite the cyclical nature of commodityproducts and economic challenges, the fertilizerindustry in the United Arab Emirates has seenimpressive growth in the last decade,” said Dr.Abdulwahab Al- Sadoun, Secretary General,GPCA. “The sector's stable growth capacity, steady sales and rising employment not onlymakes valuable contributions to the Emiratieconomy, but also ticks several boxes in thecountry's Vision 2021 plans.”

The UAE accounts for the third largest share offertilizer production in the GCC, according to the

GPCA's Fertilizers Indicators report. Fertilizersproducers manufactured 5 million tons of productsin 2014, up from 3.2 million tons in 2004.

Meanwhile, fertilizer capacity in the ArabianGulf grew to 40.8 million tons in 2014, a 3.8%increase from the previous year, earning revenuesof US$6.5 billion, according to the report.

An export- oriented industry, the UAE's fertilizerindustry also earned sizable revenues in 2014.

“As more than half of fertilizers produced inthe UAE is exported to diverse markets aroundthe world, manufacturers of this commodity alsoearned US$653 million in revenues,” continuedDr. Al- Sadoun.

Looking ahead, the GCC's fertilizermanufacturers can look into diversifying theirproduct portfolio to include specialty fertilizers, advises the GPCA. To date, only 396,000 tons ofspeciality fertilizers are currently produced in theGCC, notably from UAE- based companies likeADFERT and RNZ Group.

“Specialty fertilizers have unique qualities thatdefine them against urea have innovativecharacteristics that yield a higher return in theglobal marketplace and therefore result in greaterreturns for the producer and the good news is thatthe UAE has already demonstrated that it canmanufacture this valuable product.”

The topic of innovation will be a key focus atthe upcoming GPCA Fertilizer Convention. Heldof the theme of “Innovating for growth: Ensuringan efficient, sustainable future”, the conference willshed light on how the GCC's fertilizer industry cancontribute to global food security while embracingan environmentally sustainable future.

the Strategy to educate Emiratiyouth about a sustainablefuture. One of the mainelements of the UAE'senvironmental conservationpolicies is to raise awarenessamong new generations to helpmodify human behaviortowards natural resources.

Eng. Aisha said that theworkshop on 'OrganicAgriculture' is considered amotivational step towardsenvironmental conservation asit educates children on theimportance of adopting theorganic agriculture system andits contributions in protectingnatural resources. She addedthat the simplified explanationof the mechanism of this systemwill help children to learn moreabout the styles and techniquesthat can be used to preserve theenvironment.

During the workshop, asimple and enjoyableexplanation was provided aboutorganic agriculture, showingthat this kind of productiondoes not use chemical materialssuch as fertilizers, manures, pesticides, growth regulators, hormones, preservatives, andanimal feed. It relies solely onthe use of natural means ofproduction such as theagricultural cycle of crops andnatural fertilizers producedfrom plant residues and animalmanure to improve the soil.

The National EnvironmentalEducation and AwarenessStrategy is based on six keyobjectives that were developedaccording to internationalstandards and the expectationsof the parties concerned. It isaimed at educating the youth ofthe UAE towards a sustainablefuture and strengthening thecommunity's commitment tosustainability andenvironmental protection. In

addition, the Strategyencourages the activeparticipation of enterprises andeconomic sectors in movingtowards environmentalsustainability and educatesGovernments and keystakeholders on environmentalissues. The synergy andeffectiveness of outreach andenvironmental education in theUAE as well as efficientcapacity-building will enablethe effective implementation ofthe National EnvironmentalEducation and AwarenessStrategy.

Amsterdam Declarationfocuses on need forimmediate action tosafeguard soils Please take care of our planet.Cultivate it, pass it onresponsibly, so we may do thesame. Please look after oursoil." This was urgent plea, onbehalf of the Youth FoodMovement and the world'schildren, of 20-year-oldNyakallo Makgoba at theclosing ceremony ofCelebrating Soil! CelebratingLife! in Amsterdam.

Speaking at the UN-backedconference on the importance ofliving soil in securing foodsupplies, Nyakallo Makgobaand Joszi Smeets of the YouthFood Movement demanded thatdelegates, including ministers, royalty and business leaders, actnow to stop to soil erosion anddegradation.

The appeal was met with adeeply felt moment of silence. Then, when eight-year oldMeike from the Netherlandsraised the AmsterdamDeclaration above her head, andparted the crowds, leading theway out, the room burst intothunderous applause.

The moment made clearwhat the event was really about, this encounter of spiritualleaders, NGO figureheads, business leaders and activists, including Vandana Shiva, theformer Ministers for Agriculture

Organised as part of theSave Our Soils campaign andthe 2015 International Year ofSoils, the Celebrating Soil!Celebrating Life! congresstook place in Amsterdam'sRoyal Tropical Institute (KIT)from 26-27 June. The eventhighlighted the fact soils arebeing lost at a rate of 24billion tons per year, at aneconomic value of Euro1.5trillion.

These are no mere statistics -delegates heard that withoutfertile soil, climate goals andfood security are totallyhopeless. While such facts andsupport by stars like JuliaRoberts have given thecampaign weight, in the end itwas the face-to-face appeal bythe next generation which madethe biggest impact.

As part of the Save Our Soils'Amsterdam' Declaration, manyof the VIP's and 200 campaignpartners present at theConference have contributedideas and commitments, makinga promise to youngergenerations to do everything intheir power to save fertile soils.

The Declaration makes astrong case for organic farmingand other forms of conservationagriculture, stating that, “Policymakers, governments, thebusiness world and civil societyshould recognise these forms ofagriculture as a fundamentalsolution for biodiversity, theclimate and food security.”

One of the contributors,Renate Künast, former Ministerof Agriculture in Germany, stated: “We will make soil acriterion in international lawand global agendas.”

The promise of the nextgeneration was strengthenedearlier that day, when a

remarkable group of VIP'scarried out a guerrilla gardeningaction on the Amsterdampavement in front of thecongress premises. Amongthem were author and activistVandana Shiva, VolkertEngelsman (CEO Nature &More), Chief Arvol LookingHorse (spiritual leader of theSioux) and Joszi Smeets (theyoung director of the YouthFood Movement).

Wielding spades, they rippedout slabs of the Amsterdampavement in a symbolic gesture, exposing the barren sandbeneath, before adding compostand planting organic seeds.Speaking during the action,Vandana Silva said: “Livingssoils and living seeds are thefoundation of our society.”

Volkert Engelsman, theDutch entrepreneur who startedthe Save Our Soils campaign ina joint effort with FAO andIFOAM, expressed gratefulnessand hope for the future after theevent: “Farmers who look aftertheir soils are the true doctorsof the future.”

Crop advice in lawns:control beetle larvaebiologically with B-GreenBeetle larvae are most likely tocause damage to your lawnbetween July and endSeptember. B-Green, based onparasitic nematodes, providesyou with an efficient, fast and, above all, 100% biologicalsolution.

The most commonlyoccurring beetle pest is thelarvae of the garden chafer(Phyllopertha horticola). Theselarvae mainly appear from earlyJuly till the end of September. They can usually be found justunderneath the turf, where theyeat the roots. Parts of your lawnwill die and become detach.

Fortunately, there is aneffective biological solutionagainst beetle larvae. B-Green,available at Biobest is basedon the parasitic nematodeHeterorhabditis bacteriophora.“After application, thesenematodes will look straightaway for beetle larvae that arehiding in the root layer”, saysBiobest advisor Nick Nagels.“They invade the larvae andmultiply inside them. At thesame time they releasebacteria which live insymbiosis with the nematodes. This combination of thesebacteria with the growingnematode population kills thebeetle larvae.”

The Kingdom of SaudiArabia (KSA) haswitnessed remarkable

agricultural development over thelast three decades, successfullyturning large areas of desert intoagricultural fields. It is a majoraccomplishment for an aridcountry that receives the world'slowest rainfall of about four

inches a year. Currently, the KSAis a leading exporter of a varietyof agricultural products includingorganice products and olives andoil as well as the dairy products, eggs, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and flowers to themarkets around the world.

Although the KSA has ahuge desert land, it also boastsof the areas where the climatehas favored agriculture. Thecountry has taken great stridesin developing its agriculturalsector by implementing majorirrigations projects and addingpreviously barren areas to itsstock of cultivatable land.Today, agriculture makes asubstantial contribution to theKSA's economy. It is worthmentioning that the city of Joufis one of the cities that has beendeveloped for its agriculturalnature and has received specialconcern in planting olives as ithas around 12,300,000 olivetrees and the city of Joufmarkets its productioninternally as well asinternationally to some of theEuropean and the Arabcountires.

To reduce its dependence onthe revenue earned from oilexports as the main source ofincome and to produce morefood for its increasingpopulation with a highstandard of living, the KSA hasbeen making intensive efforts, through its five-yeardevelopment plans, to developits agricultural sector.

Cultivated land in the KSAhas dramatically increasedbecause of governmentencouragement and financialaids and the country ispresently witnessing anunprecedented exploitation ofits agricultural potential. Theintroduction of sophisticatedtechnology and modernmachinery and cultivation ofnew crops and differentvarieties have led to theestablishment of thegreenhouse industry and largeagricultural projects.

This has not only improvedKSA's self-sufficiency but alsothe export of some productssuch as wheat, dates, watermelon, poultry, eggs andfresh milk.

The Saudi agriculturalmarket has reached a highlevel of development and

sophistication but still there arenew challenges that should beovercome. The government in itsendeavor to find a delicatebalance between food securityand water security hasrestructured the agricultural sectorby suspending its buying of localwheat, by encouraging large dairyprojects to bring the fodder fromout of the country sources, byhandsomely subsidizing of up to70% of the cost of new irrigationtechnologies, by prohibitingexport of melon, watermelon, potatoes and onion, and finally by

giving liberal loans to investors toshift to produce under waterefficient glass/green houses.

Achieving the highest profitability for aproject is the main goal for anyproducer or investor, but animal and

agricultural producers face uniquechallenges including weather and climateconditions, particularly temperature andhumidity, which are regarded to be the mostchallenging elements in the region. In everymarket across the region, hightemperatures, extreme humidity and salinitygreatly impact operational costs, productionquality and quantity, according to a varietyof economic measures and criteria.

Given the scale of these challenges, apractical, economical andenvironmentally-friendly solution isneeded to help greenhouse and poultryfarmers mitigate the negative impacts ofweather conditions on production. Thissolution should also help them achieveeconomic goals by allowing them toproduce crops and poultry of the highestquality and largest quantity, which givethem an added value and the opportunityto sell their superior production for thebest possible prices compared to theircompetitors.

Evaporative cooling cell pads proved tobe the optimal solution, setting newstandards for agricultural and animalproduction in desert areas with thetoughest weather conditions. They havebeen shown to increase the biologicalperformance of poultry and plants, resulting in increased productivity andprofitability.

Stemming from an ongoingcommitment to address the uniquechallenges faced by animal andagricultural producers in the region, WadiGroup established Tabreed in 2006 tomanufacture state-of-the-art cooling cellpads using evaporative coolingtechnology. In a record time, Tabreedbecame one of the most significantplayers in manufacturing and exportingcooling cell pads to the Middle East andCentral Europe.

Tabreed cell pads offer an exceptionalcooling and ventilation system thatcombines four unique features to deliveroptimal production and profitability. These

features comprise of the quality ofmanufacturing raw material, ultimateperformance in reducing temperatureinside poultry wards and greenhouses toachieve the best possible productivity, competitive price and convenientoperational cost to achieve the highestreturn on investment. The advancedmanufacturing technique combined withthe outstanding European craft paper andknow-how give Tabreed cooling cell padsexceptional wetting properties andincrease their ability to absorb andrelease water. Many European andChinese cooling pads may possess oneor two of these features, but Tabreedcooling cell pads have a clear competitiveadvantage in any market.

In terms of quality, Tabreedevaporative cooling cell pads consist ofcorrugated sheets of cellulose papergathered in an opposite sequence with abee-hive structure allowing air to flowsmoothly through the cell pads. Made ofhigh-quality European craft paper, Tabreedcell pads are coated with bitumenpolishing, a colorless and odorlesssubstance, which prevents disintegration ofcell pads and enables farmers to wash offthe salt and minerals that accumulateovertime on the pads. The bitumenpolishing further prolongs the lifespan ofthe pads and hence makes them moredurable. These unique features makeTabreed cooling cell pads best positionedto operate in the Gulf countries, whereexcessive amount of solid substances andsalts in water are rampant.

The most significant feature of Tabreedcooling cell pads is the unparalleledcapability to withstand even the harshestclimate conditions, while reducing theinternal temperatures by up to 15 degreesin greenhouses and up to 20 degrees inpoultry wards in the most efficient, cost-effective and environment-friendly manner.

Cooling cell pads use an evaporativecooling technique that self-adjusts to theenvironmental conditions of poultry wardsto best suit the flocks by maintaining anideal temperature of 20-26 degrees, whichprovides optimum growth rate at a

practical production cost. The balancedair distribution inside the wards leads tothe homogeneous growth of poultryflocks. Tabreed's cooling efficiency willalso decrease the heat stress on birdsallowing the feed conversion rate (FCR)to decrease, while increasing the meatyield reflected in the breast of the bird.Over time, the cells' performance willincrease hen house capacity by 25% ineach poultry ward, meaning that a wardwith 10,000 hens will be able to host12,500 hens, thanks to Tabreed coolingcell pads.

As for greenhouses, Tabreed cell padshave been proven to help farmers doubletheir annual profits due to their ability toregulate the annual production cycle ofvarious crops and provide ideal conditionsfor select crops outside their plantingseason, which doubles crop quantitiesavailable for sale throughout the year.Tabreed cell pads also maintain smoothair flow throughout the greenhouse, whichleads to the homogeneous growth ofcrops and enables farmers to increase theproduction capacity of greenhouses byapproximately 40%, while maintaininghigh quality crop yield. The cell padsfurther provide optimal humidity levels, which increases soil fertility and curbs theformation of harmful bacteria. This inreturn, contributes to the fertilizationprocess, enriches the soil and increasesthe volume of high-quality crops. Last butnot least, Tabreed cell pads renew the airand oxygen levels inside the greenhouse, which enhances the photosynthesisprocess and boosts quality andproductivity of crops.

Tabreed cooling cell pads combineChinese cost-efficiency with Europeandurability rendering themselves as themost viable solution for heat reduction inlocal and international markets. Tabreedoffers evaporative cooling cell pads topoultry producers and greenhousefarmers at a competitive price. They havebeen proven to be efficient, reliable anddurable, offering optimal performance inthe toughest weather conditions, ideallysuited for Gulf countries.

The exceptional Tabreed cooling cell pads provide greenhouse farmers and poultry producers withthe best productivity and highest return on investment

BioHealth® TH/BS WSGDESCRIPTIONBioHealth® TH/BS WSG is ablend of selected Trichodermaharzianum and Bacillus subtilisstrains, humic acids andseaweed extract. Trichodermaharzianum and Bacillus subtilisare antagonist to soil bornepathogens like e.g. Phythium,Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia orFusarium, whose hyphens andorgans can be disposed byTrichoderma's comprehensiveenzyme tools. ThusTrichoderma suppresses thespreading of these pathogens.Bacillus subtilis have evolvednumerous mechanisms for bothattack of other fungi orbacteria and for enhancingplant and root growth. Duringa culture Bacillus subtilisnourishes on the root exudatesin the rhizosphere and thusbuilds a biological protectivebarrier against soil bornepathogens.

In latent affected plantmaterial BioHealth® TH/BSWSG remains ineffective, dueto the reason that the antagonistcannot follow the parasite intothe inside of the plant. Therefore BioHealth® TH/BSWSG has to be regarded as asoil conditioner or rather a plantintensifier and under nocircumstances as a fungicideagainst soil pathological fungi.

From among the different systems ofapplication of pesticides by Endotherapy, the city of Alicante (Spain) adopted the

SOSPALM system in 2010 to combat the redpalm weevil in about 5000 palms in themunicipal parks of the municipality.

To try to answer any questions presented bythe SOSPALM system, several trials have beendesigned by the professorship since early 2011.

The first question was: Is SOSPALM aneffective system? To answer this question, inearly May 2011 Canariensis palms with a stemof less than one metre were used, in pots withdrip irrigation and covered with nets, intowhich the same number of adults, male andfemale, were introduced.

The same insecticide was injected throughSOSPALM pegs at monthly intervals.

The result was that six months later, all thetreated palm were healthy while all theuntreated examples were dead.

The second question was: Do all insecticidesbehave in the same way when applied withthe SOSPALM system?

To answer this question, in June 2011 a trialwas devised in which various palms previouslyfitted with the SOSPALM peg, covered withnets and with the same number of adult maleand female red palm weevil introduced, wereinjected with ten different insecticides viaSOSPALM pegs.

Six months later, all the palm trees treatedwith the most effective insecticides remainedhealthy while the palm trees treated with lesseffective products had died.

The third question was: What is thepersistence of the effective insecticides underconditions of high pest pressure? In two trialssimilar to the above, the most effectiveinsecticides were applied at a frequency of 15,30, 45, 60 and 90 days. These trials also servedto establish the curative effects of the testedinsecticides.

Six months later, of the palms treated every45 days one died and of the palms treated every90 days, two died, while those injected every 15to 30 days were healed.

In turn, various dilutents were tested, fromwhich SOSPALM LIQUIDO was obtained, inorder to improve the behavior of the pesticides.

This trial was repeated on a larger scale inApril 2012 with Phoenix Canariensis palms ofmore than two metres in height.

The fourth question was: How does the palmtree react to the introduction of theSOSPALM peg? In 2011, seven months afterthe first trial, the palm trees where theSOSPALM pegs had been installed were openedand inspected, whereby it was verified that thesurrounding tissue only showed slight damagecaused by the drill bit when drilling theperforation whereas the rest of the tissueremained healthy.

Since 2012, whenever a palm tree in the

Now,four years later, it can be proved that when thesystem is installed correctly no lesions appearinside the palm, with the peg remaining functionaland able to continue with the treatments.

The fifth question was: Is the behavior of theinsecticides applied by Endotherapy in datepalms between 5 and 13 meters high similar? Two trials of monthly applications were carriedout beginning in August 2012. In this case, thetrial were designed in a different way. Fourmonths after the implementation of theSOSPALM protocol, samples of the apicalmeristem were collected and brought to theRegional Agricultural Laboratory of Valencia totest for pesticide residues.

It was found that the insecticides appliedwere present at the apical meristem. Similartests were conducted in 2014 with the sameresults and repeated in 2015.

The sixth question was: Do SOSPALM pegskeep the same effectiveness with the passageof time? To this end, in June 2014, a trial wasperformed in Canariensis and dactilyferas palmsbetween five and eleven meters high, in a parkin Alicante, where the pegs had been installed

four years earlier and insecticides had beeninjected periodically. Only one insecticide wasapplied and samples were taken of the apicalmeristem to detect the presence of the pesticide.

The samples were analyzed in the samelaboratory and it was determined that theinsecticide applied was present in the meristem, meaning that after four years the SOSPALMpegs maintain their effectiveness.

Two more trials were conducted incommercial fields of tall date palms, in the townof Elche, with SOSPALM pegs which had beeninstalled two years earlier.

A third trial was made with PhoenixCanariensis palms with SOSPALM pegs whichhad been installed three years before and aftermore than a year without applying any product. In both trials the insecticide was found in themeristem.

Similar trials have been done in 2015.

The seventh question was: Do pesticideresidues appear in dates when implementingthe SOSPALM protocol? To this end, twotrials were designed in commercial productionfields of Metjoul and Confitera varieties ofdates. Monthly applications of insecticide weremade since June 2014.

The SOSPALM protocol was applied andwhen the dates were ready to harvest they weretaken to the same laboratory for residuedetermination. It was found that there was nopresence of insecticides in the dates analyzed.

This test was repeated in 2015.

The eighth question was: Do pesticideresidues appear in palms flowers whenimplementing the SOSPALM protocol? InMay 2015, applying the same protocol, flowersamples were taken and brought to the samelaboratory.

The result was that no pesticide residues werefound in the pollen of flowers when applyingthe SOSPALM protocol.

It is planned that this trial be repeated in2016.

Full details of the trials cited in this summaryare posted on the website of the UniversityMiguel Hernández:http://palmeralelx.umh.es/trabajos-catedra-2/lucha-activa-contra-el-picudo-iii-tratamientos-con-endoterapia/

For these reasons, THE SOSPALMPROTOCOL IS A VERY EFFECTIVESYSTEM TO CONTROL RED PALMWEEVIL, LEAVING NO PESTICIDERESIDUES IN POLLEN OR DATES INDATE PALM TREES.

Vencomatic introducesits new aviary systemfor layers: the Bolegg

Gallery. This multi-tier systemcombines user friendlinesswith an economic design. While birds can follow theirnatural behaviour resulting inoptimal laying performance, itallows you to collect eggs inan efficient way, preservingthe quality after lay.

As it is getting moredifficult to find skilled labour, the importance of an easy tomanage system is growing. The Bolegg Gallery usesvertical space to increase thenumber of birds per m2 floorarea. Its open structuresimplifies inspection. Thewinchable back walls allow

nest inspection and the tree-concept offers a goodoverview and access to alllevels.

At the heart of the BoleggGallery you'll find theVencomatic laying nest. Thisnest is based on Vencomaticinnovations, such as theVencomat, the tipping floorand the egg belt. The design ofthe Vencomat ensuresminimum contact with theeggs. With the perfect angle ofthe nest eggs gently roll awaydirectly after lay protectingthem from damage by thebirds. All 3 tiers of the BoleggGallery are equipped with eggbelts, enabling automaticcollection of all eggs. Atipping floor closing

mechanism prevents litteringthe nest at night and allowsdirt and dust to fall off easilywhen closing the nest. Thesystem offers an hygienicenvironment through thecombination of the nest andthe wiremesh floor.

The design combined witheasy operation makesmanaging aviary birds easierthan you think.

Vencomatic Group is knownfor its innovative andsustainable systems for thepoultry industry. Combiningthree well-known brands -Vencomatic, Agro Supply andPrinzen - Vencomatic Groupoffers a full range of innovativesystems for all types of poultryfarms worldwide.
