Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane

By: Jimbo After months of waiting and planning, asking people for hand made awards, lining up staff at the Dragstrip for the Atomic Blast 4, we get a week of rain… not just some

rain but lots of rain. Just one thing though.. “CRAB” Landry of Six Pak Pretty Garage don’t mind da’ rain. RatRodders love to play in the mud. There isn’t enough words to describe how the Atomic Blast 4 went. Crab did a fine job keeping the event energized. With m i c r o p h o n e i n h a n d h e interviewed, organized, instigated, a huge fun filled weekend. (rumor has it next year Sunday will be

added to the event, campers are already arriving a few days before the event just to get their spot.) Facebook is full of comments like -

Headed home after a really cool weekend at Atomic Blast 2015. There's only one way to have more fun in a car. And I squeezed all the fun I could out of Vertigo before I broke the old girl. All I can say is if you haven't been to this Event take your vacation for next year now! Even if you don't have a Rat. I had a great time with old friends David Rigney and Jerry and Marilyn Johnson Burns as well as all the new friends I've made over the past year or so Daniel Wilkerson, Dennis Hom, Ron Alexander, Destry ST Pierre and the list goes on. Se you guys next year… Mark C Rabalais

Cell phones worked overtime capturing pictures and videos of the action packed Atomic Blast. We will post more next month as there just isn’t any more room in this months issue.

Jimbo, The Vancleave Merchants Association will host the 10th Annual Pebble

Bluff Creek Car Show on Saturday, April 25th on the Vancleave High School Grounds. Each year we have seen the event grow and look forward to seeing wonderful vehicles from past years and new projects that have come to fruition. The event is a fund raiser for the Vancleave First Responders which cover over 200 square miles. Our firefighters and their families attend and the truck and crew will be available to shake hands and thanked for their service to our community.

Jimbo: I hope all is well with you. My friend is wanting to sell a mid 70's Pontiac Grand Prix. It is real nice. I told him I got more response out of the little ad in your magazine for a '69 Chevy pick up than I did at Hemmings, Carsonline, etc. combined. I have a good photo. Advise me what the cost is to place a small ad/w photo in your magazine.

I hope to see you soon. mikeamartin02349

Jimbo, I got a new stick deodorant today. The instructions said: “Remove cap

and push up bottom.” It hurts to walk, but whenever I fart, the room smells lovely...... sent; Giff, (giff1500@)

Giff, I’ve put flavor additives in my fuel tank, so thanks for the tip.. I’m thinking it’s nice to know that when we reach that certain age, we can still smell up the place.. Now if I can just find a deodorant that smell like cotton candy… jimbo

Once I flew into L.A., at the LAX Airport to surprise an old dude from school. I hadn't seen him in years. So I grabbed a cab to get to his house. I gave the cabbie the address and off we went. About 45 min. into the ride, I thought we must be going the wrong way, so I

reached over the front seat and tapped the driver on his shoulder, when he hit the brakes. The cab started to go side to side. We went off the freeway, down thru a ravine, and into the woods. The cab got jammed between some trees, so we had to crawl out the windows. As we brushed ourselves off, I immediately started to apologize to the dude.

I said, “hey brother man, I didn't mean to startle you, when I reached over the front seat, like I did”.

He said, “aw that's ok. To tell you the truth, this is my first day driving a cab. For the last 28 years, I drove a hearst”.

One day, I was really feelin’ rough. So I went to see this doctor dude. After a very lengthy exam, he gave me a sample prescription to try.

It read, may cause side effects of, nervousness, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, cramping, headaches, diarrhea, impotency. I said, “dude, I came here to get better, not worse”! Bummer! And to think I spent all of that money too. I'm just not feelin the love. …..

Till next time---keep it hangin loose Cuz---just be Cuz…….

On March 7th a few members from Coast Cruizers and Misfits car clubs went to the

Halo Headlight company in Ocean Springs. Tony and his crew came in on Saturday to show and explain how the halo light is put together. Everything for the light is made in the U.S.A. except for one item.

The halogen bulb is made overseas. There are not any light bulbs for auto's made in the U.S. regardless of the name on the box. (Look next time). This isn't a cheap put together light. There is some great craftsmanship that goes into their product. Check the lights out at www.HaloHeadlights.co/ make sure you put the slash on the end and not a .com.

We left the shop and went to eat. There is a new barbeque place in St. Martin on Lemoyne Blvd. The place is called BAD A ** BBQ.

Duane is the pit master and he does a good job. They have Pork Butts, Baby Back ribs, Brisket and Chicken. You can get this on a plate or if you want on a sandwich. The chicken is pulled chicken not by the piece. There are 3 types of barbeque sauce on the table. The ribs are dry rub, but you can ask for wet if you want to.

I got a 2 meat plate of ¼ rack of ribs and pulled pork with 2 sides and almost couldn't eat it all. The ribs had a lot of meat on them, more that I have seen on ribs in along time.

The sides are bake beans, coleslaw, potato salad , fries and green beans.

I had the bake beans and coleslaw , and the bake beans were great. The potato salad was good , I had a taste of it. Next time I will get the potato salad.

There was so much food that no one wanted desert , couldn't eat it if you got it, but there is always carryout boxes.

The address is 15701 Lemoyne Blvd just west of the Sicily's pizza on the south side of the road. You can call ahead also the phone number is 228-331-1490 and hours are Mon-Sat 11 to 9 and Sun 11-6.

So go by and get some good food. Till we eat again

Great time at Mike Bruno's Northshore H-D Children's Hospital benefit car show,

March 7 2015 Slidell, LA

The day started pretty cool then turned in to a beautiful sunny day. Over 100 really nice cars in attendance. The D.J. was spinning some good tunes, great food, beer, and soft drinks were provided, no charge but you could make a donation if you desired. Fun with cars, nice folks and a good time. Lots of spectators milled about during the day. Awards were presented promptly at 3 pm and everyone blasted off afterwards. I do believe a grand time was had by all. Till next time Gizmo

Dear Jimbo, I enjoy your MotorSports magazine very much. Keep up the

good work. I have a 1955 Chevrolet 210 4 door. It’s running a late small

block 305. I had the motor built by Rick’s machine shop. Rick Claxton on Dip in Mobile. I told him what I wanted and he really beefed it up. The heads have been ported & polished. Everything has been done to the heads that can be done for horsepower. It has a Comp cam kit with a duration of 292 and a lift of 501 and with dual Flowmasters it sounds very good.

The transmission is a turbo 350 with a B&M shift kit and Boss Hog 3000 stall. . It has that old school look and with over 300 H.P. under the hood and a 4:11 posi-traction rear end there is no reason to be late for school.

Enclosed are some pictures of my car, maybe you could put a few in the magazine.

I’ve been doing shows in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida for 18 years now, with around 300 wins.

I’m 73 now, but will keep doing shows as long as I can drive. I drive my car not trailer.

Thank you Johnny Boggs

Johnny, What a great job you did capturing the “old school” look. Roll

& tuck upholstery, spinner hubcaps, 4:11 rear, B&M… all the cool stuff.

The ‘55 was just a day dream when I was in high school. If I was luck I could catch a ride to school in a cool car. When i talk about the old days your car is what some of us would refer as the top of the line wish I had car.

Great job….. Jimbo

Duryea Plant

The Duryea brothers were the first Americans to build a successful commercial automobile powered

by a gasoline engine, and the first to incorporate an American business for the expressed purpose of building automobiles for sale to the public. Following the introduction of the internal combustion engine in the mid-19th century, a number of Americans worked to develop a car using this technology. Charles Edgar and James Frank Duryea, brothers born in Illinois, were bicycle makers in Washington, D.C. who became interested in the new gasoline engines.

Charles Duryea entered the rapidly growing bicycle business and displayed an inventive talent. In 1886 at the Ohio State Fair, he saw a stationary gasoline engine that appeared to him capable of powering a carriage or wagon, and began designing an engine of his own. Over the next 7 years Frank and Charles designed a prototype of an automobile which utilized that engine. By 1891 he had completed a design, and with his brother Frank, constructed a car in a rented loft in Springfield, Massachusetts. While a disagreement over whose design ultimately prevailed tore the brothers apart, the “Buggyaut” (what the brothers named it) made its debut on the streets of Springfield on September 22, 1893. The original was a used horse drawn buggy that the brothers had purchased for $70.00 and installed their engine. The vehicle traveled between 200 and 300 feet but came to a screeching halt with the failure of the belt transmission. After Frank made a slight adjustment to the design, he drove the car nearly half a mile later that day.

With Charles back in Illinois selling bicycles, Frank made improvements to their automobile design. He replaced the belt transmission with gears and friction clutches and used Charles's single-cy l inde r , f ou r - cy c l e , f ou r -horsepower, water-cooled engine design to power it. The carriage had a gear transmission (replacing the original friction transmission), a spray carburetor, and a make-and-break ignition. In 1894, Frank drove his auto into Hartford, Connecticut, making it the first car to appear both in the city as well as in the state.

During 1895 the Duryea appeared in and won several automobile races. The one on November 28, 1895 went from Chicago to Evanston, Illinois, and back, and was recognized as the first automobile race in the United States. In 1896, Frank constructed 13 identical cars from his design, making the Duryea Motor Wagon Company the first to make multiple copies of an automobile for sale.

The Duryea motorcar was involved in America's first known auto accident in March of 1896. New York City motorist Henry Wells hit a bicyclist with his new Duryea Motor Wagon. The bicycle rider suffered a broken leg. Wells spent the night in jail. The first motor vehicle traffic accident was recorded.

In 1904 the Duryea brothers opened the Stevens-Duryea Company, a car manufacturing enterprise in Springfield, Mass. and Frank served as the company's vice president and chief engineer until he retired in 1915.

In 1913 George Vanderbilt purchased and drove a Stevens-Duryea, but he was one of only a few people in the U.S. that could afford one. His 1913 Duryea is Vanderbilt's only original car kept at his Biltmore Estate.

Charles E. Duryea died September 28, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 77. J. Frank Duryea died February, 15, 1967 in Saybrook, Connecticut, at the age of 97.

I viewed the 1894 Duryea that appears in this month's photos at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum, Tallahassee, Florida. This is an

amazing museum featuring the collections of DeVoe Moore. More than 140 automobiles are on display along with outboard motors dating back to 1908. There are also scooters, antique brass cash registers, pedal cars, early farm equipment and much, much more. It is a “must see” if you are in this area. I hope you enjoyed this article as much as I enjoyed doing

the research.

I’m proud to be an American. By: Geraldo Rivera Almost everybody I have ever met wants to be American,

or at least in America. I realize that sounds chauvinistic, perhaps arrogant, but it is true – and for myriad reasons,

ranging from traditions to scenery, roots to realities. From sea to shining sea, ours is a blessed nation of fabulous variety. From the Grand Canyon to Grand Central, our natural wonders rival any on earth, while our

manmade wonders are the envy of history. Even those with harsh critiques of certain aspects of our foreign or economic

policies, or who find fault with some segment of our civil society, still want to be here. We don’t have a perfect union, but it’s the best the world has to offer. Left-wing, right-wing, Libertarian and Tea Party may

complain about government overreach, but ours is the world’s freest society.

There is an undeniable, even mystic attraction to this New World Colossus. Some are drawn by our remarkable freedom to be or do virtually anything that doesn’t interfere with anyone else.

You can watch Fox News or Al Jazeera or Comedy Central. You can be Republican or Democrat, Green Party or Black Panther. You can stay up late or stay in bed. You can shave your head or grow a mustache, be vegan or carnivore. You can like the Yankees or Red Sox, Red Bulls, Redskins, Cincinnati

Reds or no one at all. Ours is a nation of law with a written contract between the government

and We the People. There are limits on what the government can do for and to us, and vice versa. We have to pay taxes in return for certain inalienable rights and responsibilities. There are speed limits and smoking bans and laws against robbing banks or hurting people, but everyone is free to be silly, smug, sensational or sensitive.

Left-wing, right-wing, Libertarian and Tea Party may complain about government overreach, but ours is the world’s freest society.

You can dig Ayn Rand or Leo Trotsky, John Maynard Keynes or Adam Smith, Sigmund Freud or Timothy Leary.

You can be Catholic or Jewish, Sunni or Shiite. You can be publicly gay, straight, queer, bisexual or transgender.

You can be part of your neighborhood watch group or keep your windows shut tight with the curtains permanently drawn.

You can be engaged, be reclusive or whatever else floats your boat. You can believe in one God or none, wear black shoes or brown, vote yea or nay or not at all.

Opportunity is also a hallmark of being an American. Whoever you are, whether you come from Tulsa or Topeka, Tallahassee or Tompkins Square, you don’t have to stay there, or follow in your father’s footsteps, unless that’s what you want to do.

You are free to travel to the four corners of the country, your mobility limited only by your imagination and budget.

You can pick yourself up by your bootstraps and get a job, invent something or go to school.

You can join the blessed military, be against all war, campaign against injustice or march topless in Coney Island at the annual Mermaid Parade. Our diversity of choice is matched only by the diversity of our people. We are the product of an historic melting process. We welcome newcomers; immigrant vigor has strengthened us and made us younger, as a nation, than our rivals. No place has that incredible ethnic, religious and racial diversity. Whoever you are, whatever color or language and wherever you come from, you can find someone here who shares your psychic DNA.

So, you’re homesick? No problem. Unless you hail from an alien world, immigrants from your particular corner of humanity are already here to give you the secret sauce or habla la lengua or do the handshake or whatever you need to feel at home.

When my mother’s parents fled the anti-Semitic pogroms raging in Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century, they found safe haven and a place to earn a decent living and raise their family here. When my dad, one of 17 children, left the sugar cane plantations of Puerto Rico armed with his first-in-our-family high school diploma, here he found opportunity, and my mom.

For these and countless other reasons, I’m proud to be an American. Geraldo Rivera is currently a Fox News Senior Correspondent.

Ford in Jeep's Clothing Story by Danny J. Ewert

I’m a Nuclear Scientist (yes, really) and a car guy. I’ll bet you’ve never seen those words in the same sentence! My car friends don’t believe I’m a Nuclear Scientist and my colleagues don’t believe I work on and build my own cars. So, I guess technically I don’t exist. My dad introduced me to the love of cars when I was young. He always enjoyed sports cars and luxury cars. One year he fell in love with and bought a LHD Dispatch Jeep from the local Post Office. Everyone thought he was crazy, but he didn’t care he loved it just the same.

Jimbo, My name is Chavus Holland. I've been

welding and fabricating metal for over 20 years. Like millions of others, I recently saw the drift trike video going around on the internet and I thought these "drift trike" things were the coolest toys ever built! My first thought was "I've gotta get me one of these!".

After one of my buddies checked into ordering one online, he relayed some discouraging info back to me! The company that he inquired about ordering from had a 13 week (and growing) back order on their trikes! Since we were dead set on owning one by this point, we were left with 2 options! Patiently wait 13 weeks....no chance of that happening, or take a stab at building one with my own design! I decided that I would challenge my skills and see what I could come up with.

I took a wild guess at some measurements, and within a week of work using a "stomp and pull" conduit bender, we were test driving our first "Chase1Motorsports Drift Trike!".

Each one since has been an improvement of the previous trike and I'm very pleased with the latest version of my design! I originally planned to only build 2 trikes but I've been overwhelmed with the popularity of these rides and I am honestly having a blast building these things!

I've since upgraded to a ratchet style bender which has cut down on the build time significantly! I get to test drive each trike before I send it out, so this makes my job very rewarding!

I plan to eventually create a Facebook page just for Chase1Motorsports to showcase all my builds and allow others to post their photos and videos on my page for all to enjoy. I'm also looking into building a website in the near future to make ordering easier.

I can offer my trikes at different stages of completion to fit the customers needs/wants. My cheapest option is a bare frame (no paint/no powder coat) with the rear axle hangers welded on, motor plate welded on, and a steel pan tractor seat with seat mount brackets included for $800. This allows the customer to buy and bolt on all their own parts to complete their drift trike to their liking. (No welding required)

I offer a basic model option for $2100. This is a complete trike ready to ride with all brand new top quality parts installed. It comes completely assembled with a front brake, twist throttle, and powder coated frame.

I also offer an elite model that includes everything on the basic model plus nerf bars, racing exhaust pipe, hydraulic rear brake with hand lever, and upgraded powder coat frame color options (including pearls, iridescent colors, etc) starting at $2650. (This model is a favorite amongst a competitive group of buddies!)

For more info contact me at [email protected]

He was a pilot and used the Jeep around the airport to carry airplane parts or to get from one hanger to the next. People teased him a lot about it, but it rolled off his back because he loved it so much. I think he prized it as much as he did his airplane or the 1964 Corvette he bought new. He died in 2002 while piloting a small aircraft he made. The Jeep eventually came to me and sat neglected until last winter.

I was in my garage staring at the goofy little beast and reminiscing about my Dad. Finally, I made the decision I would bring it to life as a tribute to him and his life. My dad was a Korean War pilot that loved his country and the military, so I decided to do a military theme.

Since the Postal Jeep is arguably the lowliest creature ever made I decided I would put my dad’s Jeep on steroids to earn it some well deserved respect.

It was literally a frame off build with everything getting stripped and painted or powder-coated. I installed a warmed over small block 302 Ford in it backed by a C4 transmission. Since it was already LHD I didn’t have to modify the steering or controls.

With the help of one of my car buddies we painted it with the military theme you see in the pictures. Because it had been the butt of so many jokes before I put it in mothballs, I had no idea what the reaction to it would be. Since it was to honor my father and since he loved the little car so much I didn’t care.

Since it’s unveiling, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the reaction. It takes most people awhile to realize (if at all) that it was a postal Jeep in a past life. People appear to be crazy about it and stop me all the time to ask about it. I tell them it’s my “Ford in Jeep’s clothing”. Thank-you for letting me share my story and pay tribute to my dad, hero and American Veteran.

Every Easter the koolest of classic car and rockabilly fans descend upon Las Vegas, Nevada for the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender. The annual event, which originated in creator Tom Ingram’s back yard in California, has since moved to The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 18th Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender will occur this year on April 2-5. The dates for next year’s Viva Las Vegas 19 are April 14-18, 2016.

After years of wanting to attend, I finally got to attend Viva Las Vegas! I try to attend the annual event every year as it has continued to grow. The retro event is four days full of constant shows and activities, including bands, the biggest pre-1963 car show in North America and you can even get married at Viva!

Some of the old-fashioned fun at the Viva Las Vegas Weekender include the All Nite Jumpin' Showcase at Brendan’s Pub, Charles Phoenix Slideshow, Guitar Geek Show, Jive dancing classes and a contest, Mitzi & Co. Photography's Pin-up Beauty Academy classes on retro hair styling, classic pinup makeovers and looks of the 30s through the 60s, a pinup posing 101 class and even a burlesque basics class given by the Las Vegas Burlesque Studio.

The Viva Las Vegas Pinup Competition is one of the top pinup competitions I know of. There is no better place to shop for vintage lovers than at VLV! With a fashion show on Friday, there is no shortage of fun. Vendors include Bettie Page, Stop Staring! Pinup Girl Clothing, My Baby Jo and over a hundred more!

Past musical guests include Little Richard, Dick Dale, the Cleftones, Los Straitjackets and one of my personal favorites, Imelda May. Lots of international acts perform at Viva as well! This year's show will feature Bobby Lewis, Dion, The Hi-Tones, Wild Boogie Combo, The Bop Hounds, The Cavaleros and many more!

Viva weekend is full of celebrities like Elvira, Playboy Playmate of the Year Claire Sinclair and pinup stars like Sabina Kelly, Masuimi Max and Doris Mayday. However one of my favorite events is Audrey DeLuxe’s Burlesque Bingo gameshow.

The Miss Viva Las Vegas burlesque competition brings top burlesque dancers to compete for the title of Miss Viva Las Vegas. The Viva Las Vegas Burlesque Showcase is the perfect companion to the competition, featuring an array of various burlesque performances. There are 3 show performances of the Burlesque Showcase throughout Friday and the highlight is the burlesque contest at 8 pm on Saturday night.

For ink fans, there is a Sailor Jerry Tattoo Lounge hosted by StedFast Tattoo Parlor! Filled with some of the industry’s top traditional tattoo artists like Rockabilly Ray, James Ferreira and Shanghai Kate as well as legends in tattooing, the lounge runs from noon til midnight all four days of the event!

The Viva Las Bowling and Tournament is from 11am to 6 pm on Friday at the bowling center in The Orleans. There is a tournament, vendors and the Sailor Jerry girls! $5 gets you 2 games, shoe rental, a hot dog and soda!

The tiki pool party has become one of the major events of VLV. It takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday for guys and gals to show off their certified vintage swimwear. It even features swimsuit contests: 1 for men, 1 for women and 1 for couples.

My brother Scott attends VLV every year to feature one of his custom built hot rods in the show. I am pictured in his 1932 Ford Coupe.

The best way to attend is by purchasing the 4day High Roller wristband which includes access to all VLV venues, including Viva Las Vegas bands, DJs, events and music within The Orleans Hotel for all 4 days plus admission to the VLV Car Show, all Showroom events such as Burlesque Competition, Burlesque Show, Fashion Show, Slide Show and all Pool Parties in addition to the car show.

The Viva Las Vegas Car Show is the highlight of the weekend! All cars are strictly pre-1963 and must be in a style from that era. With over 800 cars in the show and more than 20,000 car show attendees, the VLV Car Show is held in the parking lot next to The Orleans Arena.

For those wishing to only attend the car show, you do not need to purchase the 4 day event wristband that grants you access to everything. Instead you can purchase a ticket for only the car show on Saturday, which still includes all of the car show bands and entertainment. The car show is from 9am – 7pm Saturday. Car show awards are given for best hot rod, best custom, farthest driven and best of show.

WHAT CARS ARE ALLOWED • Built 1963 and earlier • Stock Classics • Painted cars • Finished Cars • Un-Finished Cars • Primered Cars • Work In Progress • Bare metal • Hot Rods • Customs • Show Cars • Nostalgic Race Cars • Fiberglass (Meeting above criteria) • Rat Rods (Meeting above criteria) • Motorcycles (Pre-63, period correct.) Viva Las Vegas is a must do for enthusiasts of anything vintage and

rockabilly. If you can’t make it this year, be sure to add it to your bucket list!

The Show Must Go On…it was always a cliché to me. I have had to do radio shows, announce car races and do my regular job sick, we all have, but this

time it was different. I was sick as a dog, but the show had to go on, both car show and theatre…not to mention my job.

Inherit The Wind was the play at Center Stage Biloxi. We had been practicing many nights a week for over two months, while I worked my day job. It’s tough, but it’s do-able. Add in the crud that was going around and it’s a whole different story, barely do-able. Just about the time we had opened the play and I was starting to feel real comfortable with my character, Meeker (bailiff and jailer) I catch the crud that was going around. (It just about wiped out SuperTalk MS on the Coast, thankfully we were not all sick at the same time.) It was so bad I would cram over the counter meds and lay down in my truck before the play a few nights. The last five shows I was battling being sick, but the show had to go on… I always managed to get to feeling almost normal by show time. A couple scenes I thought I would drown before I got off stage to blow my nose. It was terrible. I loved being in the show, I loved my character, I had the character down pat and then I knew I was going to be handicapped in giving a great performance. I knew 80% had to be good enough. It was terrible doing the play being sick and I felt terrible. Then came Saturday and I had a car show to do and a play performance that night. After getting to bed late Friday night, after working all day and a play performance Friday night, I had to get up at 6 am and head out Saturday morning to Gulfport Dragway for the 4th Annual Atomic Blast Car Show. Atomic Blast 4 was a great show, but my voice was gone, I felt bad and I played music from 9 am until 3:30 pm. Loaded everything and was I out of there by 4. I had to swing by the car wash and clean The Hot Rod Show Trailer and put it away…on the way home I stopped by a pharmacy and talked to the pharmacist. My nose was running so bad and I needed something else to help dry me up. The pharmacist helped me out. I had time to run by the house, get a shower, clean clothes and head out to do the Saturday night performance. Once I arrived at Center Stage and got into my costume as “Meeker”, I went back out and laid down in my truck and took a thirty minute nap. Just before I laid down I crammed some over the counter meds and set my alarm on the I-phone. When I woke up, I felt pretty good, the meds had started to kick in and I went out and had a great show, probably the best of the nine show run. I dealt with this procedure for about 5 of the 9 shows and that really sucked. You have a group of people, (this was a large group…incredible cast of 32) that become family for about two months, you become real close and everyone is helping everyone else out. Especially with a group this large, when one person makes a mistake, it messes up a lot of people, so everyone is helping everyone else out in rehearsals and during the show. You cover and help each other, you are dependent on the next person for your success. Sunday was the ninth and final performance, it was so bittersweet. I was so glad it was over because I was sick, but I was going to miss the world, miss the people and being “Meeker.” You are called by your character name during the over two and half months of the show and when the show is over, your character dies forever. Lol! Long live Meeker! This finishes up my column series “How I Spent My Winter Vacation” Oh I have been able to finish my first two walking sticks I’ll

actually turn loose of. I’m taking it slow and making each stick like it was my own, the only way I know how to do something. It’s time to kick off the car show season officially with The Coast Cruizers 1st Saturday night of the month cruise-in…The Mega Cruize-In at Edgewater Mall, Biloxi Saturday Night April 4th 6 pm to 9 pm. Sponsored by Auto Zone. Auto Zone has been incredible supplying us with the best door prizes you’ll find anywhere, there will be cool cars and great music. We also have our Mega 50/50. It is a very exciting time… to kick off the car show season. April 30 through May 3 make plans to attend one of the best car shows in this part of the country, Burning Up The Beaches in Ft Walton Beach, FL. It is just a fun show, with really nice cars, they feed you every night and a show included Friday and Saturday night with a cash drawdown on Saturday night. We’ll also be doing the Mega 50/50. Heck, my brother went to the car shows in Pigeon Forge, Daytona Beach and others last year and he said he enjoyed Burning Up The Beaches the best. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will be there on Saturday.

I enjoyed the off-season and got a lot done, but I’m sure ready to get the Hot Rod Show trailer out and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind!

Til next month… Terry

Well, faithful readers, next month is the Indy 500. 59 years ago (1956 for those of you from Rio Linda, as Rush Limbaugh, used to say on his radio program). My good friend Harold Miller and I decided to hang the midget on the back of my 1956 Ford Wagon and head for “Indy”. Harold was owner operator of “Miller Crankshaft Co.”. He also built racing engines for the local street racers in Long Beach, Ca., Bell flower, Paramount, Downey, Nor-walk and Whittier. Among those street drag racers, was “Jim Dunn” of

the movie “Fireman Jim Dunn”. Jim collected many victories in funny cars brackets, and his son Milke also carried on with wins in Funny Cars.

The `56 wagon was stick, (3 on the tree) and over drive. Ford was big on over drives in those days, and were great tow cars. We were traveling at 65-70 mph and the tack was reading 2200!

Harold and I drove straight thru, one in the sleeping bag with the seats down and the other behind the wheel driving. Gasoline was 29.9 a gallon, and the “Wagon” had a 18 gallon tank!

We arrived in Indianapolis 30 hours after our start. The Indy car we were crewing was one of the dirt cars to make the speedway. Qualified 22nd out of 47 cars. (33 to start the race).

We got there May 10th, and checked in the Apt house that car owner Ernie Casale had arranged for us. In the apt complex was Johnnie Parsons and wife, Eddie Kuzma famous car builder, Don Edmunds famous car builder, but not at this time.

Our first stop after checking in was “Bates White Front” Restaurant and lounge. The fans would come in to see the drivers, and some of the lady fans did more than look! As you readers know, (especially Tiffin Room and Workman’s Lounge) many ladies were there daily (Shirley with the brand-new `56 Chevy Convertible) it was pale yellow black top, and it was out front each day, (until she got occupied.) The midget track was on 16th St. and of course was called 16th St. Speedway. We would practice with the Indy car #41, during the day, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday nites we would go midget racing. While there I ran KoKomo and Ander-son Ind. Two more but I can’t remember their names.

Your previous readers know I ran a V-8-60 against the Offies. Harold Miller was an engine builder on the same level as Clay Smith. Clay was cam, Harold was cranks as their specialties. (See photo) So, we are at Anderson Ind., and I’m the only Ford in the show. To please the cus-tomer’s promoters would often match the slowest main event Offie against the fastest Ford.

I went to Harold in the pits and said you got those 30’s ready? “Yep”, he said, “take me maybe 15 minutes to install”.

I went over to the Offie driver, and said “I’m Larry Dunham, and I’m driving my own car”. He looked at me and replied “I’m Johnny Coy” and “you get to pick the lane outside or inside”. He looked at me and said, “you’re giving me the outside?

“Sure” I answered, “all I have to do is get to that 1st turn first, and it might be my win” (Offies had to be “wound up” to make any horsepower, so they like the outside.)

It was a 2 lap race, and I won it with great care. For you readers, the “30’s” I asked Harold about were the “NITRO” carbs in the tool box and that meant 30% Nitro for 2 laps. With Johnny on the outside, I bought us down real slow, Offies don’t run good slow, the nitro “kicked in” as I punched the throttle at the start and beat Johnny down in to the corner. He

tried to get under me down the back chute, I stayed on the throttle deep, real deep, into the corner. He tapped me on the rear bumper going into the first turn and also the same way coming out of the last turn, and the crowd loved it!

Johnny’s real last name was Barbara. He made it Coy for advertising. Johnny won the main event that night, I wound up 9th. There is a thing call “sandbagging” that many main event drivers used to do. The driver “lifts” early off the throttle going into the turn, and if done right, he will be in the 8 slowest cars in the main. 18 cars in the main, 16 by qualifying, and 1st & 2nd finishers in the semi main. (those 2 start in the rear) The big one for Midgets was the “Night before the 500”. Three 100 lap races. Shorty Templeman won all 3 races. He was National Midget Champion.

The promoter had a rule, that if your midget wasn’t fast enough, you could get in another car and try to qualify. I made the last show started at midnite, & set a Ford track record when qualifying.

MAY THE WIND BE AT YOUR BACK ! KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES

1949 Jaguar XK120 provided by Ansa Motorcars Model: Sarah Clark Photographer: AdPix.Biz

Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine isn't

limited to any particular era, because we hold greatness above all, timeless excellence above rules, and this 1949 Jaguar XK120 fits that philosophy perfectly. Since great, timeless, and excellent models rule, we asked Sarah to model.

The car was originally called the “Super Sports Two Seater” but was later called the “120” because that was how fast it could go, according to Jaguar. Although there were strong factory claims to the contrary, many years later it was revealed that Jaguar never actually got one to hit a confirmed 120 mph. They had calculated it would do it, though, continuing a long tradition of car manufacturer's claims, which tradition has been proudly adopted by the EPA.

Modern owners of the XK120 report that it will in fact hit 115 mph, but at that speed the driver's afternoon tea sloshes a bit too much for respectability.

Even 115 mph was not too shabby in 1949, though, especially given the cars' specs: 160 bhp, double overhead cam 6-cylinder motor, displacing 3,442 cc, with twin carburetors and a four-speed manual transmission. It had independent front and rear live axles and four-wheel drum brakes. This was an exotic sports car in that day, something like a Pagani or Porsche would be today.

Car makers back then could proudly boast of their top speed, like the 1936 Auburn Speedster, which sported a plaque on the dash, proclaiming that it could hit 100mph, faster than a train! Now such frivolity would be frowned upon, as reckless and wasteful. Yes, today our much more sophisticated society would rather honor Miss Kardashian's latex dress than the brilliant pre-computer engineering required to get a 160-hp 6-cylinder to hit 120mph. But anyway….

Like Kardashian's dresses, though, this 1949 Jaguar's aluminum body was masterfully formed by hand, hammered and stretched over a frame of ash-wood. In honor of this great tradition, we asked Kardashian to model, but she was already hammered.

Jaguar's XK120 was not originally intended to go in to production. It was a show car, based on some sketches from right after World War II. But the public had such a fit over it that it was rushed in to production, and racing, where it gave Jaguar its first outright LeMans victory, further exploding demand for it.

We do not know exactly how much this one is worth, but a similar one sold last year for $495,000 and they are regularly listed for sale at $250,000 to $450,000.

We found this gorgeous example (the car!) at the Amelia Island Festivals of Speed, where it won Best of Show. It was supplied by Ansa Motorcars, (ansamotorsports.com/ansa-motorcars/) of Miami, which found it as part of its specialty: high-line European exotics.

*You could find our Model, Sarah, who is also Miss World of Wheels, at your show or event, or representing your company. She's a proven crowd-favorite spokesmodel. You should have seen the commotion as she modeled there for our photo shoot. The flashes were like an electrical storm at a fireworks factory. We could put your logo all over her and it would appear in thousands of social-network photos, world-wide. Contact Jimbo.*

While being only 1 of two great rallies still held at Big Creek Park on beautiful Lake Somerville, it hosts many new elements in the rally world and includes the carts and bikes as one. Bike games for the bikers and Cart races add a new twist. We are pretty sure all our hard core bikers bro and sisters are pulling for a good ol’ fashion cart crash but hey it's a party for all and let the truth be known for all you nay sayers we won't go to a rally with carts good luck finding one! Most all our crowd are hard core riders who choose to take to 4 wheels during this event as its safer you can haul more breasts and booze on a cart then a bike. With this said 13 live bands concert large stage 60 plus vendors Blowout Biker productions on hand for the in between fun and stage fun, just too much to list. Expected crowd this year in the thousands, hay-fields maybe back in use for roadside self contained camping.
