fight against human trafficking, forced prostitution, 2nd generation prostitution, and child prostitution

Primarily working in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Recently expanded to Mau, Uttar Pradesh

ACHIEVEMENTS Ajeet Singh was named

2010 CNN IBN Hero Nominated for 2010

Frontline Award for “Human Rights Defenders at Risk”

Ended child prostitution at Shivdaspur, Varanasi Since beginning of 2001

Rescued around 98 minor girls

Fighting around 200 cases against 500 traffickers

NON-FORMAL EDUCATION CENTER (NFE) Asha has funded NFE in

Varanasi before Education center for children

in red light district Helps children acclimate to

formal schools Provides a variety of activities

Primary focus is art therapy for the children

Have an arts teacher and local person to run center Plus an outside play area Anonymous message box for

children to voice concerns

NIGHT SHELTER Also previously funded by Asha Was supposed to be a night

shelter for the kids Did not work out due to financial

restraints and security issues Instead converting it into

vocational school on 2nd floor for beauty salon and fashion design Machines and beauty supplies

have been bought already Finances are being worked out

First floor has a computer room, kitchen and area for meals

UPDATES Mau Center

Land has not been purchased yet Having trouble acquiring property due to nature

of activities Close to making a purchase

Asha sent $10,000 last May Guria’s additional sources of funding

Rs. 800,000 ($14,742) from Actionaid Of the Rs. 1,851,774 for the project, need Rs.

497379 ($9165) Will raise rest after purchase

SITE VISIT DETAILS Manju and staff are engaging and excited about

what they do Creative approaches to dealing with children

Office sells cards made by the children to raise money

Donations are not necessarily earmarked for specific activities Trying to take legal action against perpetrators could

potentially be more of a financial drain than NFE centers

Mentioned “fundraising risk” is that activities require dealing with corruption

Also risk of political pressure and death threats against organization
