HISTORYOFGURNET SAQUISH BEACH1605firstmapshowingGurnet/Saquish.1638Gurnet/Saquish isgrantedfromDuxbury toPlymouth.1690PlymouthsellsSaquish toEphraimandGeorgeMorton.1694Plymouth sellstheGurnet toJohnDoty,JohnNelson&SamuelLucas.From1714-1832theThomasfamilyprivatelyownedmostsharesofDuxburyBeachandpartsofGurnet howevertherightofaccessthrough thepropertyexistedproviding ahistoricalright-of-way.ThefirsthousewasbuiltbytheBurgessFamilyontheGurnet in1720.In1832NathanielThomas’greatgrandchildren soldrights toDuxburyBeachtothetownofDuxbury.

1984Postandcablefencingofright-of-wayiscompleted,definingaroadwayfromthebridge totheGurnet.

(cottage)andtheirfamily&guests.ItislocatedattheendofthepeninsulaattheentrancetoPlymouthBay inPlymouth,MassachusettseastofClark’sIsland andwestofGurnet Point.ItsonlyaccessbylandisfromCanalStreetinMarshfieldorthe

PowderPointBridgeatDuxburyBeach5milestothenorthbyfootorby4-wheeldrive.

Becausethereisnoelectricalconnectionwiththemainland,housesoperateundersolar,wind,orpropanepower.ThenearestretailandserviceareaisinHall'sCorner, Duxbury.EntrancetotheGurnet Point andSaquish isguardedbysecurityservices

during peaktimes.Visitorsarerequiredtocheckinpriortoentering thebeach.4

Membershipisencouragedhowevernotrequired.Membershipaverages175membersperyear.Therearecurrently25directorsontheboard.Conservationeffortsinclude:• Roadmaintenance

• Snowfencingand grassplantingto preservedunes incriticalareas

• Breakwaterfencingat"thecurve"

• Formingandmaintaining a"beachmanagementplan"withthetownofplymouth conservationcommission;

• Gatewatchsecuritytopreventtrespassing onourfragileenvironment

• Fundraising to underwritealloftheseefforts.

Saquish BeachLandTrustConsistsof58memberswhoownprivateresidencydwellings(cottages) locatedonGurnet/Saquish andwhobought intotheSaquish BeachLandTrust.

Thelandowned bythetrustextendsfromthecenterlineoftheBoulevardsouth easttothemeanlowwaterlineonthefrontbeach.Itisunbuildableandcoveredbytheseaathightide.Membersareguaranteedaccessviaaneasementonthedeed.

TheBoardofTrusteesconsistsof7votingmembers,1Treasurer&1Secretary.

9lotsareownedbytheSaquish BeachLandTrust.Theother8lotsareprivatelyownedandNOTincludedinthetrust.

• Resident/ownerswithanuptodatestickerhaveaccesstopassyearround,dayornight.• 1,500stickersissuedpast3years.

• Guestswithanuptodatewindow taghaveaccesstopassyearround,dayornight.• 3,000passes issuedpast3years.

• MemorialDaythruLaborDay:• Guestsintheguestbookwillbestoppedbygatewatchbutallowedtopass

LiabilityWithout participationinaHabitatControlPlan(HCP)residentsarenot“covered”andcouldbeheldpersonallyliablefortakingofplovers.

DiscontentWhilewewould liketohelpinthesolutionofprotectingandgrowingendangered/threatenedspecies,restrictionstoresidents(suchasaccess)willresultindiscontentandcouldhaveanegativeimpacttoefforts.

ResidentParticipationBecausepropertiesareprivatelyowned.100%participationinanything(includingaHabitatControlPlan(HCP))ishighlyunlikely.
