1.Overview GearingUpResponsibleandOutstandingTeachersinSoutheastAsiaforthe21stCenturyorGURO21is amenu of flexible learning courses that aim to address the teachers’ needs in relation to thetechnological advances and changing educational trends of the 21st century. GURO21 is alsoexpectedtoenhancetheteachers’knowledge,skills,attitudes,andvaluesonteachingandlearninginthenewcentury.This Learner’s Orientation Guide (LOG) is designed to provide you with the needed backgroundinformation on the course. It outlines in detail the various components and requirements of thecourse.FamiliarizeyourselfwiththevariouspartsoftheLearner’sGuidetoenableyoutocompletethecourse,withflyingcolors.2.CourseLearningOutcomes Thisonlinecoursewillequipyouwiththeknowledge,skills,attitudes,andvalues(KSAVs)requiredof21stcenturyteachersthatyoucanpassontoyourstudentstohelpthemfacethechallengesofthe21stcentury.Thiscoursewillalsodevelopyourfacilitatingskillstoeffectivelyplayyourroleasteachersinthe21stcenturyby:• developingapersonalprogramforacquiringmasteryofyoursubjectmatterspecialization;• assessingyourfacilitationskillsas21stcenturyteachers;and• creatingaplantoeffectivelymanageyourclassroomactivities 3.Modality Thecourseisprimarilydeliveredonline.Ithasbeendesignedtobeinteractiveandself-instructional.It also incorporates the Four A’s (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, and Application) of the adultlearningprocess.Asalearner,youwillbestudyingthematerialsfollowingtheprescribedcourseschedule.Youwilljoinotherlearnerstoformoneclass(composedofapproximately15learners)andwillmeetonlineonceeveryweek, fora totalof fourweeks, for the live/synchronous (real-time) three-hourchatsessionsusingSEAMEOINNOTECH’sFlexibleLearningManagementSystemknownasiFLEX.AnassignedFlexibleLearningTutor(FLT),fromthepoolofSEAMEOINNOTECH’sexperts(i.e.formerand current officials from partner Higher/Teacher Education Institutions or the Ministries ofEducationfromtheSEAMEOmembercountries),willfacilitateyouronlinesessions.Alearningpackagethatcontainstheself-instructionallearningmaterialswillbegiventoyoubeforethecommencementofthecourse.Uponreceipt,youareexpectedtostudyatyourownpaceandfollow the prescribed schedule for the synchronous/asynchronous sessions and deadlines for thesubmissionofthecourserequirements.

4.TheINNOTECHFlexibleLearningManagementSystem(iFLEX) TheINNOTECHFlexibleLearningManagementSystem(iFLEX)istheonlinelearningplatformforthiscourse.Itisbasedontheopen-sourceonlineplatformknownasMoodle.Only registered users of the coursemay log-in and benefit from the online features of the iFLEX.Additional features of iFLEX include real-time chat messaging system, discussion forum, anddocumentsubmissioncapability.IniFLEX,youjustneedtopointatandclickontheassignedlinksorbuttons.BelowisasampleGURO21Course1ClassPageintheiFLEXToaccessyourclasspageintheiFLEX,youneedtofollowthefollowingsteps: 1 Gotohttp://iflex.innotech.org

5.TargetLearners Thetargetlearnersareclassroomteacherswiththefollowingqualifications: • Preferablyunder50yearsofage;• Computerliterateandhaveaccesstointernetconnection;and• WillingandabletofulfilltherequirementsofthecourseAslearner,youshouldideallybecapableofnavigatingyourwaythroughtheWorldWideWeb.Given that the course utilizes access to the internet, a stable internet connection (in school, athome,oratthenearestinternetcafé)andelectricalpowerarenecessary.TheLearningManagementSystem(LMS)isbestviewedusingthefreeandopensourcewebbrowsersuchas“MozillaFirefox”,“GoogleChrome”,“Safari”and“InternetExplorer”.6.FlexibleLearningTutors(FLTs) TheFLTswillprovidelearningsupportandguidancetohelp learnerstocompletethecourse.Theywillbeassignedforeachgroupof15learners.Theyarealsoexpectedto:1 Conductonlineclasssessionsusing iFLEXforaminimumofthreehoursperchatsession, fora
totaloffoursessions,followingtheagreedschedule;2 Post discussion topics in the Forum and if any, respond to the learners’ post and asmay be
necessary,provideadditionalguidelinestofacilitatelearning;3 Ensure that learners have accomplished the course requirements following the prescribed
formatandschedule;4 Ensure that learners have accomplished the course documentation requirements i.e. course
evaluationform,pre-andpost-self-ratingcompetencychecklistsandotherdocumentsasmayberequired;
5 Respondtolearnerqueriesrelatedtothecourse;6 Monitor the learner’s performance, evaluate and providewritten feedback and ratings on all
theirsubmissions;7 Remind learners on any announcements from SEAMEO INNOTECH as regards the course
activitiesandothermilestones;and8 AccomplishandsubmittheiFLEX-basedlearners’SummaryofRatingsForm.

7.CoursePoliciesandRequirements 7.1 EnrollmentProcedure
You may enroll independently or request an official from your Ministry of Education tonominateyou.Youarerequiredtopaythefullcoursefeepriortotheconductofthefirstsession.Learnerswith incomplete payments will not be considered as enrolled. No new enrollees will beacceptedaftertheorientation.Oncethecoursehasstarted,droppingmaybeallowedbutthecoursefeewillnolongerberefunded.Shouldyouwishtodropoutfromthecourse,youarerequiredtofilloutaRequestforDroppingForm (seeAnnex“D”)andsubmit this to theCourseManagementTeam.Thedeadlinefordropping isbeforethe3rdchatsession.FailuretosecureanapprovedRequestforDroppingwillmean retention in theofficial listofenrolled learners,or consequently inincompleteordeficientrating.
7.2 Orientation
Prior to the start of the course, you will be required to attend an online or face-to-faceorientation.Youwillbeinformedofthedateandvenueinadvance.Duringtheorientation,themainfeaturesofthecoursewillbediscussed,andyourquestionsandconcernswillberespondedto.Inaddition,theself-instructionallearningmaterialswillbegiventoyou.Shouldyoufailtoattend,thecoursemanagementteamshallnotbeliableforanydifficultiesthatyoumayencounterlater.
7.3 Synchronous(OnlineChat)Sessions
Youareexpectedtoparticipateinathree-hourchatsession,onceaweekforatotaloffourweeks for the duration of the course. Participating in a live (synchronous) chat session issimilar toparticipating ina face-to-faceclass,although it ismorechallengingbecauseyouandyourfacilitatorsdonothavethebenefitofeyecontact,bodylanguage,andothernon-verbalcommunicationcues.TheonlinechatcanbeaccessedintheiFLEXunder“Chat”.Priortothechatsessions,takenoteofthechatscheduleandloginbeforethespecifiedtime.Onthehand,duringchatsessions,youareexpectedto:
• Participateactively:chatentriesshouldbenolessthan30andasmanyas150more• Read the entries of your FLTs and co-learners, and enter your own responses to the
questionsandideasposted• Providecomprehensiveandspecific responses tomovediscussions forward.Asa rule,
follow-up your short responses with an explanation, description or elaboration, andprovideexampleswhennecessary.
• Neverengageinprivateconversationswithco-learners• Bepreparedbyworkingontheassignedtopicsandreadings• Focusonthediscussionthreadsduringthechatsessions• TakenoteoftheinstructionsgivenbyyourFLTs• “Beep” the technical support staff when in need of assistance and resort to private
messagingoraccessthe“GetSupport”linkforimmediatetechnicalassistance.• Maximizetheuseofmultimediaresourcesandlinkstocomplementthediscussionswith
yourFLTandco-learners

7.3.1 ParticipatingintheChatSession
ToparticipateinthesynchronousChatdiscussion,clickonChat.YouwillthenseethelinkClickheretoenterthechatnow.Dragthecursortothelinkandclick.
Your computerwill then launchanewwindowwhere you can start to chatwith your co-learnersandyourFLT.Ontherighthandsideofthispage,youwillseealistoflearnersinsidethechatroomwiththeircorrespondingpictureandthetermbeep.Youcanclickon theBeepbuttonbesideyourFLTorco-learners’name ifyouwant tocalltheirattention.The phrase “(Your Name) has just beeped you!” will appear on the person’s screen butotherparticipantsinthechatwillnotbeabletoreadit.YourFLTand/orco-learnerscanalsobeepyouduringthechatsession.However,frequentuseofbeepcanalsobedistractingtoyouandtherecipient.Thus, it isexpectedthatyouwillusethebeepbutton judiciouslyoronlywhenextremelynecessary.

Tostartparticipatinginthechatsession,dragyourcursortotherectangularboxormessagepaneatthebottomofthechatwindow,click itandstart typingyourmessage.Assoonasyoufinishtypingyourmessage,hittheEnterkeyonyourkeyboard.
Yourmessageis immediatelypostedinthechatsession.Youwillseeyourpicturefollowedby your name and the time the message was sent at the dialogue box where all chatmessagesareposted.

7.3.2 Immediateresponsewhenunintentionallylogged-off
Duringachatsessionitispossibletobeloggedoffduetoproblemsassociatedwithinternetconnectionorpoweroutage.Ifthishappens,justre-entertheongoingchatsession,clickontheChat linkon the iFLEXclasspage, thenhitClickhere toenter the chatnow.YoumaynowcontinueexchangingmessageswithyourFLTandco-learners.
Ifyouwanttoseethediscussionwhileyouwhereloggedoff,justclickonthebuttonViewpastchatsessions.YoucanalsousethisfeatureoftheiFLEXtoreviewthetranscriptofthepreviouslyscheduledchatsessionifyouwereabsent.
Choose thedateand timeof thepreviously scheduledchat session thatyouwould like toreadbasedonthedateandtimeofthechatsessionbyclickingonlinkSeethissession.
7.4 Asynchronous(Forum)Discussion
Youmayalsoparticipate in asynchronousonlinediscussion. This canbe accessed in iFLEXunder theheading“Forum”.Thediscussion is consideredasynchronousbecauseyouhavetheoptiontopostyourresponsesto the topicswithinadayortwobeforeorafterthechat sessions. The Forum discussions are intended to capture inputs beyond the chatsessions. The FLT is expected to initiate the Forumdiscussions. You are then expected torespondto thetopicpostedbyyourFLTat thesoonest timeyoucan.Whendirected,youcanalsocreateyourowndiscussiontopics.

HerearesomeofthewaysinwhichForumcanbeusedinthecourse:• Askingyoutointroduceyourself.Thisisusuallydonebeforethestartoftheclass.Your
FLT normally prepares the discussion forum topic with some guidelines on what youneedtoincludewhenintroducingyourself.
• Askingyoutoreflectonthechatsessions.Aftereachchatsession,yourFLTmayaskyoutopostyourreflections.Inprovidingyourreflection,pleasetakenoteoftheguidelines.
• Discussion of key points and issues related to the learningmaterials. Since the three-hourchatsessionseveryweekmaynotbeenoughtocovereverythingthatneedstobediscussed.YourFLTmaypostatopiconaweeklyoronaperlessonbasis.AskyourFLTfordetailsandguidelinesregardingthismatter.
• FLTmaywanttoextendatopicafteraChatsessionorgiveapreviewofatopicpriortoaChatsession.Topicscanbepostedeitherpriortoorafteryourchatsession.YourFLTwillannounce if there are such postings in the Forum. Extended discussions on relatedtopics,lessons,andrequiredreadingsmayalsobemadeusingtheForum.
BelowaretheguidelinesyoushouldfollowwhenusingForum:
1 FollowthebasicguidelinesforForumbehaviorsuchas:
• Donotusefoullanguage• Nopersonalattacksonfellowlearners/FLT• Takenoteofthetopicbeingdiscussedandmakesurethatyourpostingisrelatedto

2 Planyourposts.PrepareadraftbeforeencodingitintheForum.3 Follow the parameters set by your FLT. Take note of the questions that need to be
answered, the length of the needed responses, and other specific requirements, i.e.respondpromptly.
4 Checkthegrammar,compositionandstructureofyourposts.5 TakenoteoftheappropriateForumpostwheretheresponsesshouldbeplaced.Some
learnersinadvertentlyendupcreatingtheirownpostbecausetheydonotreplytotherightForumpost.
6 Whenasked,respondandcommentonthepostsofotherlearners.7 Providecomprehensiveresponses.
7.4.1 ProceduresforaccessingForum
ForumcanbeaccessedbyclickingontheForum iconintheclasspage.WhenyouclickonForum,youwill see fourcolumnsundertheAddanewdiscussiontopic:(1)Discussion,(2)Startedby,(3)Replies,and(4)LastPost.
Youwill see thediscussion topics under theDiscussion column; theonewho created thediscussion topic in the Started By column; the number of responses to a particular topicunderRepliescolumn;andthename,date,andtimethe lastpersontopostedaresponseundertheLastPostcolumn.

7.4.1.1 ReplyingtoanExistingDiscussionTopic
Topostaresponsetoanexistingdiscussiontopic,clickonthetopicorsubjectthatyouwanttorespondtoundertheDiscussionheading.Theboxshowsthepersonwhostartedthetopic, itssubject,thedateandtimethat itwascreatedanditscontent.ClickReplyatthelowerrighthandcornerofthediscussionboxtopostyourideasonthetopicthatyouhaveselected.UponclickingReply,youshouldbeabletoseeanMSWord-likespacebelowthetopicwhereyoucantypeyourresponses.ClickonthePosttoforumbuttononceyoufinishtypingyourresponse.
Afterdoingthis,youcannowseethepostthatyouhavecreatednexttothenameofyourFLToryourco-learnerwhopostedthetopic.

7.4.1.2 CreatingYourOwnDiscussionTopic
You can also create your owndiscussion topic in theForum functionof iFLEX. Todo this,clicktheForum icononyourclasspage.YouwillthenbedirectedtoapagewithanAddanewdiscussiontopicbutton.Clickthisandyouwillbeabletocreateanewdiscussiontopic.
Youwill thenbedirected toapagewithanMSWord-like feature.Place the cursoron thesubject field to type the titleof thenewdiscussion topic thatyouwant to start.Click thespace provided below and type your thoughts on the topic. Click on the Post to forumbuttononceyouarefinish.

7.5 CourseRequirements
Aside from participating in the synchronous and asynchronous sessions, the course has anumberofwrittenrequirementsthatyouneedtosubmittobeabletocompletethecourse.UsingtheiFLEX,youareexpectedtosubmitthemfollowingtheprescribedschedule.
Thefollowingarethefour(4)writtenrequirementstobesubmitted.a. Two(2)ModuleAssignments
Take note of the expectations on theassignmentsespecially in termsof scope,sequence, or length. Learners areexpected to upload their moduleassignments under the headingWrittenRequirements, under the Assignmentsection (see Annex A for a copy of themoduleassignmentsguidelines).
b. TheReflectionPaper
Bytheendofthecourse,youwillbeaskedtoprepareareflectionpaper (See Annex B for the Reflection Paper Template). It musthighlightthefollowing:• Other learningneeds related to facilitating21st century skills
forSoutheastAsianteachers;• Brief summary ofmain learning activities engaged in during
thecourse;• description of major/significant learning insights (in terms of knowledge, skills,
attitudes,values)gainedfromthecoursewithreferencetospecificlearningoutputs(e.g.,moduleassignments,pre-andpost-testresults,groupdiscussionsessions);
• evaluative statements regarding the relevanceandapplicabilityof coursecontentstoyourworkplace/position;
• challengesandareasoflearningdifficultiesexperiencedduringthecourseandhowthesewereaddressedand/ordealtwith;
• comments on your experience on the different modalities of learning (self-instruction,groupdiscussions,print/Webtechnologies);and
• suggestionsforimprovingthecontentcoverageofthecoursec. TheActionPlan
TheActionPlan (AP) is the last requirement for thecourse.TheAP isdesignedtoassistyou inapplyingtheskillsandknowledgethat you gained in the course for your school. The AP shouldintegrate, synthesize,andapply thecorecompetencies thatyougained from the course. This is uploaded under the headingWrittenRequirements, specifically in theActionPlan sectionofthe iFLEX class page. You are advised to follow the attachedTemplate(seeAnnexC).

SomeFLTsmay require additional requirements.When this happens, youneed to consultyourFLTonhis/herexpectationsregardingtheadditionalrequirementandthedeadline.Herearesomeguidelinesonthesubmissionofthewrittencourserequirements:1 Submitwrittenrequirementsontime.Takenoteofthedeadline.2 Makesurethatyouhavecoveredallaspectsofthewrittenrequirement.3 Submitonlyonefile.4 SubmitthewrittenrequirementsintheappropriatesectionsofiFLEX.Ifyoufailtofollow
theseinstructions,youwillbemarkedas“Deficient”.5 Keepinmindthatnon-submissionorsubmissionofarequirementthatisofpoorquality
will result in receiving a “C” rating. Note that two “C” ratings in any of the courserequirementswillautomaticallyresulttoafinalratingof“C.”
7.6 Proceduresinthesubmissionofthewrittencourserequirements
The written course requirements will need to be uploaded in the iFLEX, under the iconWritten Requirements. Inside Written Requirements, you will see the following icons:Assignment1,Assignment2,ReflectionPaper,andActionPlan.
7.6.1 Assignment1and2
Inordertosubmityourcompletedassignment,youwillneedtoclickonthebuttonWritten Requirements. You will then see in the next page: Assignment 1 andAssignment2.ClickAssignment1ifyouwishtosubmityourassignmentforModule1andAssignment2ifyouwanttosubmityourassignmentforModule2.After clicking the Assignment 1 button, you will then see the button Addsubmission.

ClickontheAddbuttonattheupper-righthandsideofthepagetolaunchanewwindow.YouwillthenseethedifferentlocationsinyourcomputersuchasDesktop,MyDocuments,andMy Computer. Click on the locationwhere you saved your assignment. Click on yourassignmentfileandthenclickthebuttonOpenatthelower-righthandsideofthewindow.Usethe“Browse”buttontolocatewhereyouplacedyourassignment.
Assoonasyouhavesubmittedyourassignment,youwillseethenameofthefilethatyousubmittedoppositeFilesubmissions.Incaseyoumadeamistakeorsubmittedawrongfileorwouldwanttosubmitanotherfile,clickontheEditSubmissionbuttonandthenselectyoursubmittedfile.Onthenewwindowthatwillappear,clickontheDeletebutton.Onceyourfilehasbeendeletedfollowthesamestepsinthesubmissionoftheassignment.

7.6.2 ReflectionPaper
To submit your Reflection Paper, click on the iconReflection Paper under the icon WrittenRequirements. The process is similar to thesubmissionofassignmentswhereyouneedtoclickAdd submission to upload a file. Click on theAddbuttonandbrowseyourreflectionpaperfromyourfile.Asinthepreviousprocedure,youwillselectthelocationor folderofyour file.Assoonasyouhavelocated the file, click on the file name of yourReflection Paper and then click Open or use theshortcut“Youcandraganddrop fileshere toaddthem”
7.6.3 ActionPlan
To submit your Action Plan in iFLEX, follow theprocess similar to that of submitting the moduleassignmentsandreflectionpaper.
Note:ThemaximumfilesizethatmaybeuploadedtoiFLEXforeachwrittenrequirementis10MB.

7.6.4 OtherRequirements
Aside from the written requirements, you are also expected to accomplish theCompetencyChecklistandtheCourseEvaluation.
Theseareself-assessmentstools.Itwillassistyouinmeasuringyourlevelofmasteryofthecompetenciescoveredinthecoursepriortoandafterstudyingeachmodule.
