GUS the GAS PARTICLE

The Nature of Gases and How We View Them

The 6 Postulates describing “Kinetic Molecular Theory”: (1) Gases have mass. (2) It is easy to compress gases. (3) Gases fill their containers completely. (4) Different gases can move through each other quite rapidly. (5) Gases exert pressure. (6) The pressure of a gas depends on its temperature.

This is Gus, the Gas Particle:

Gus??

Well…where is he??

Page 3: GUS the GAS PARTICLE The Nature of Gases and How We View Them The 6 Postulates describing “Kinetic Molecular Theory”: (1) Gases have mass. (2) It is easy

Nothing but empty space right now. . .

Oh wait, HERE he comes!

aaand…well, there he goes!

Don’t expect Gus to stick around, folks…

…he’s a very social creature but is always on the go, whether fast or slow!

Page 5: GUS the GAS PARTICLE The Nature of Gases and How We View Them The 6 Postulates describing “Kinetic Molecular Theory”: (1) Gases have mass. (2) It is easy

Let’s see if we can use some immovable walls to trap him for a bit…

He’s not likely to mind . . . …right?? HERE HE COMES AGAIN!

Got ‘im!! Wow, he sure keeps going, doesn’t he.

Just look at him go! Hah, that trap looks just like a pool table, with Gus as a billiard ball! But…he’s not coming to a stop! Quite the “Energetic” fellow!

…wonder if he is getting lonely… Doubtful, but hey! Let’s send in his identical twin brother, Gusius Prime, and see what happens!

They are exactly the same in every way! Can you even tell them apart from each other? Twins…haha… OH MAN, look at them hit each other!! That’s just like brothers…getting in the other’s way.

Wait…I just realized…they’re not twins…they’re TRIPLETS! Here, let’s put the Gussinator in there, as well:

It’s getting a bit crowded in there… I wonder how they feel? Imagine being in there with them O_O;

Alright, I have to be honest with you…Gus and his brothers AREn’t triplets… there’s another, too! Meet “The gas particle formerly known as Gus IV”:

Those guys sure are all over the place in there… I’ll bet they’re wishing they could take a break or at least slow down for a breather…but it doesn’t seem to be happening… those walls don’t seem to mind being hit, much, either…but I wonder how THEY feel, too...

How about we cool them down? Let’s submerge the container in an ice-water bath (aaaah, niiiice and ccoooooooolllll).

Hmm! Seems like they are slowing down!

Hmm! Seems like they are slowing down! But…wait wait wait… wow, the ice cubes are melting fast!! *shrugs* Guess that pent-up energy those guys had needed to go SOMEwhere and do SOMEthing, or else what was the whole point of the ice-water bath, right?

I wonder what happens if we toss out the bath water and heat things up, instead… LET’S TRY IT!

Hmm! Seems like they are speeding up! It’s pretty obvious where they are getting the energy to move faster and faster from, right? Just like the icecubes from the bath accepted the energy of the Gus-es, now the Gus-es are accepting the energy from the higher temperature environment!
