PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2018PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2018

Welcome everyone to the Eudunda & Robertstown communities and surrounding districts for our 121st Show.

This year our theme is “Remembrance - ‘Lest we Forget’’ celebrating the fact that we have our show on the 11th November, “Remembrance Day” and there will be a service in the Marquee at 11am. After the service, stay in the marquee,as our local ex service personnel from the Eudunda RSL will speak about their experiences in various arenas, in Remembrance.

Opening the Show is Glen Mickan, who will speak about his families links to the Eudunda area and their service during World War I. Glen is an excellent speaker, read more on page 6.

The season has been varied with some areas getting moderate rain. August has brought some rain but the eastern side of Eudunda is badly lacking in rainfall and now considered a serious drought, with recognition in the media and on TV of the plight out there. So we are praying and hoping for some spring rain to fall. We also pray for those farmers interstate who are in even worse drought conditions and have suffered longer.

We have a great variety of entertainment for young and old, including Speed Shear, Ute Muster, Vintage Bikes, Horses in Action, Old Engines, Young Farmers Challenge, Paul’s Caricatures, Scarecrow Comp, Live Music by Michaela Jenke, Dance group, the Scout Archery Tag, plenty of animal activities with Animal Rescue and the Farm Barn who also have Free Pony Rides, Face Painting, Gustav Treasure Trail (show bags), School Choir, Dance Group, Show Girl/Boy and School Displays. Don’t forget to spend some time looking through the Pavilion, there will be a great variety of display and competitions in there, and also find out what the trade stalls have to offer you.

This year we have the Dog Jumping return, and a new Junior Farmers Challenge, run on similar lines to the very popular Young Farmers Challenge but for younger competitors.

We hope that the drought does not affect the Agricultural, Fruit & Veg & Flowers in Pavilion entries too much. We encourage your participation in entering into various sections of the show as outlined in this show book. We note that In previous droughts people still bought along what they could to the show to be supportive and proud of their and the communities resilience.

This year Luke Sander, our Young Rural Ambassador and Ben Driver our Rural Ambassador have done an excellent job representing our show at Association level. Who will our new Ambassadors for the coming year? Come to this years show opening and meet them.

A very big thank you to all our Sponsors. This year the Committee has worked hard to give you more recognition, and hopefully to become more involved with the show. We appreciate your support, generosity and understanding during this change. Thank you to our Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver & Bronze Sponsors.

Thank you also to everyone who contributes to the smooth running of the Show from the Committee members to the Judges, Convenors, Stewards and Patrons, Prize Donors, everyone who donated just that little bit extra and Members for supporting the Show to make this a great community event.

A special thank you to Melinda Schutz as Show Secretary, Wendy Oliver as Minute Secretary, Helen Schiller as Treasurer and Peter Herriman for editing the show book and our committee, .

We think we have something for everyone, and will be able to make it a great day out at a very good price for a family or even single to attend.

Please come along and help make our 121st Eudunda & Districts Show a great success.

Richard Schulz, President 2018.

We are proud to claim Eudunda as the birthplace of Colin Thiele AC, author andeducator, who is recognised as one of Australia’s most versatile & prolific authors ofchildren’s books.

Colin has published over 100 books. Some of his novels include “Storm Boy”, “Blue Fin”, “FireIn The Stone”, “Sun On The Stubble” and “Uncle Gustav’s Ghosts”. Several feature films andtelevision series have been made based on his written experiences both locally and in widerSouth Australia. His bronzed sculpture c& Interpretive sign an be seen in the award winning aunique Eudunda Centenary Gardens. Come visit the Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery where you can find out more about Colin Thiele and his family, they have also developed a special “Colin Thiele Drive” self drive tour.

The book “Uncle Gustav’s Ghosts” inspired Eudunda to create an interpretation of Uncle Gustav as the Town’s logo, as a memory of the pioneers who opened up this area with their wives and families and of course their faithful companions at foot to help with their daily chores.

The Remake of the film “Storm Boy” will be released on Jan 10 2019.The Remake of the film “Storm Boy” will be released on Jan 10 2019.

Colin Thiele’s photo was taken on his 85th Birthday by Stephany Evans Steggall who wrote the book ‘Can I call you Colin’. The Eudunda Show is always held about the time of Colin’s birthday 16th Nov 1920, and we remember Colin’s

passing on the 4th Sept 2006. His website is hosted locally at http://eudunda.com/colinthiele/

Remembrance Day.Remembrance Day.A day to reflect on the sacrifice ofthose sons and daughters ofAustralian and New Zealand, andindeed a large part of the World wholaid down their lives for their Country, their Family and Friends so that wecould remain free.

We remember those of our area, towns and district, our land, whomade the the ultimate sacrifice. Wealso remember all those who returnedhome, wounded, and disturbed forthe rest of their lives.

Remembrance Day is also known asArmistice Day and recalls the end ofhostilities of World War I (1914 –1918) on the “11th hour of the 11thday of the 11th month" (1918). OneHundred Years ago.

Sadly World War II (1939-1945), sawmany more Australian and NewZealand lives lost.

All who returned have since passedaway, taking with them memories ofthe horrors of war, its futile nature, ofmateship and sacrifice. We alsoremember the support people, theNurses, the Red Cross and manyothers who devoted their time andsome their lives to support the forces, and the loved ones who worried athome.

We also pause to remember and honour our Service Personnel for their services in subsequent engagements, Korea, Borneo, Malaya and Vietnam.

“You will have the opportunity to hear stories from some ofEudunda’s RSL Members speaking in the Marquee on Show Day”

There have been other arenas around the World where our service personnel have played a significant role, such as Timor, Afghanistan and the Middle East. We pray for our current service personnel, who can be called into action at any time that they remain safe and come home to their families and recover from their ordeals.

Why do we commemorate with Poppies?Poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in WorldWar I; their brilliant red colour became a symbol for the blood spilled in thewar. Over time they became a symbol of Remembrance Day.

As you walk around the Eudunda Show you will notice many sections haveused the ‘Poppy’ as a theme and perhaps their special feature. See how manyyou can find? If you like, why not enter in one of your favourite sections?

“Lest We Forget”

You are invited to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Service, and if can you only arrive later we planto have a spot for you to still lay your tribute.
