the GW undergraduate exchange program fosters academic immersion via

direct enrollment in one of our forty higher education exchange partners

around the world. the exchange model provides an enriching cultural

experience and is highly recommended for students who are prepared to

engage independently in their host institution abroad. Prior to departure,

students will have the opportunity to meet with exchange students from

their future host institution and gain valuable information regarding the

everyday life and academic culture of their host country.

With its intense cultural life, rio de Janeiro offers the perfect place for those who really want to immerse themselves in the south american reality: plays, shows, concerts, exhibitions, street performances, scientific conferences, cultural debates—everything happens in rio.

About the Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)this university of 12,000 undergraduate students has been consistently ranked the best private university in Brazil. students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Brazil’s cultural capital—known around the world for samba, white-sand beaches, rainforests, soccer, gorgeous mountains, colorful festivals, and the carioca, laid-back lifestyle—in a country quickly becoming one of the most influential in the world. no wonder it’s called the cidade maravilhosa, or the marvelous city.

LEARNiNG AT PUC-RiO

GW exchange students can enroll in courses in english or Portuguese at PUc-rio. exchange students must have a 3.0 GPa and two semesters

of spanish and/or one semester (or the equivalent) of Portuguese for admission. Options in english include courses in the fields of international relations, business, history, sociology, and literature.

LifE AT PUC-RiO

PUc-rio offers top-notch facilities on its beautiful campus. there are four libraries, internet access, and community service and cultural centers. On campus, students can also find three restaurants, five coffee shops, a bookstore, and banks. many shops, bookstores, and restaurants fill the campus neighborhood. the university provides programming specifically for international students to help them get to know the school, the city, and the local culture of their new host country.

ACCOmmOdATiONS

exchange students can request to live with a homestay family through the PUc-rio housing office. typically, this option includes 1–2 meals daily. students can also choose to find their own apartment in rio de Janeiro.

LifE iN SAO PAULOsão Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, the largest city in the southern hemisphere, and the world’s seventh largest city by population. são Paulo is the capital of the state of são Paulo, and exerts strong regional influence in commerce and finance, as well as arts and entertainment. there are plenty of things to see and do—from important monuments, parks, and museums, to high-profile race car events and são Paulo Fashion Week.

About the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP)students at the Fundação armando alvares Penteado have the opportunity to be immersed in the largest metropolis of Latin america at a strong, private university. são Paulo has become one of the most important financial centers of the world, and has a similar stature in international relations. the university receives accolades for its programs in the social sciences, and also for its well-known cultural center.

ELiGiBiLiTy ANd APPLiCATiON dEAdLiNES

ELiGiBiLiTy

the requirements for students applying to study on a GW undergraduate exchange program are as follows:

• All students must have completed a total of 45 credit hours before participating in the program

• Students must be in good judicial standing and not have a significant record of judicial infractions at GW

• Students must have a minimum cumulative GW GPA of 3.0

the availability of any particular exchange may vary according to the status of the institutional agreement. admission is selective and space is limited.

HOW TO APPLy

in order to start an application for a GW exchange program, students must first meet with the appropriate regional study abroad advisor. students can schedule a meeting with their regional study abroad advisor by visiting our staff page at http://studyabroad.gwu.edu/index.cfm?Fuseaction=staffmain.home.

Once students have met with their regional study abroad advisor, they will be granted access to the online exchange application. students should schedule their appointment well in advance of the application deadline stated on the Office for study abroad website.

Participants are nominated by the GW Office for study abroad for exchanges on the basis of application, academic transcripts, judicial status, and preparation for study abroad through an exchange program. Final admission decisions rest with the individual partner institution.
