Church of many peoples, exists to praise and honor
God, to embrace the dignity of every person, to grow
together spiritually, and to witness to the Good
News of Jesus Christ in Redlands, California. We chal-
lenge ourselves to deepen our unity as we move
forward toward the vision of a new place of worship.

Great experiences challenge us and invite us to
see things in a new way. They move us to new
vistas and new landscapes in our lives. They
have a way of saying that what has gone be-
fore is not all that important. Reality may be
far greater than we ever imagined. In today’s reading, Isaiah
is confronted with the power and majesty of God as he
experiences the Heavenly Host proclaim, “Holy, holy, holy is
the Lord of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory.”
At this he is filled with terror as he recognizes his sinfulness
in front of this awesome experience of the divine. He must
allow himself to hear the words of healing and the call to be
sent as the Lord’s prophet. He must put all else behind and
respond to the call of the Lord.
In the Gospel, Peter and his companions experience the pow-
er of Jesus as a great number of fish caught. At this, they are
filled with a sense of their own weakness and sinfulness. Like
Isaiah, the Lord invites them not to be afraid but to follow
him. They respond by leaving the boats on the shore, “They
left everything and followed him.” These experiences are akin
to dramatically falling in love, giving life a new purpose. If one
wholeheartedly embraces the opportunity at hand, he will
be in a place he couldn’t have imagined for himself.
Great scriptures cause us to ponder and be challenged. They
also invite us to see things in a new way; to move us to new
vistas and new landscapes in our lives. In 3 weeks, we will
again celebrate our Parish Renewal Retreat weekend and the
refrain of our theme song says it so well: “So I leave my
boats behind… leave them on familiar shores… Set my
heart upon the deep... Follow you again, my Lord.”
When a person is generous and willing to embrace the new,
there is a peace and purpose that overtakes life. Generosity
changes our souls. We become different people. We become
greater. We have a new outlook on life. Life becomes fuller
because of our generous acts. St Paul recognizes the call of
God in his life: “By the grace of God I am what I am, and his
grace to me has not been ineffec ve, I have toiled harder
than all of them.” Paul responded to the call of God with
the generous gi of his life and knew himself to be one of
God’s chosen.
2019 is a gi of new me to all of us with new opportuni es
for growth and generosity. Many have embraced the chal-
lenge to pledge to the Diocesan Development Fund Drive.
This generous gi affords the diocese and the parish an
opportunity to move forward in our service to the Lord. In
whatever way God’s call comes, let us embrace that call. Deacon Steve
generosidad cambia nuestras almas. Nos conver mos en
personas distintas; mejoramos.

Hello Friends,
This Vocation Corner is designed to help everyone bet-
ter understand the call to be a child of God. What does this mean for your
life? I invite you to ask me! Email me your ques ons about voca ons.
Thank you for your posi ve responses about the difference between a job
and a voca on. Several people said that they needed to be reminded that
work was not the most important part of their life. It is easy to get caught
up in working, especially in our fast-paced world. I encourage each of you
to take a few minutes each day to turn off your cell phone and rest in the
Lord’s presence. Just a few moments of quiet reflec on can make all the
difference and help you remember that God has a plan for you.
I look forward to receiving your NEXT ques on about voca ons.
Many blessings,
Father Hau Vu

A Romantic Night and Prayer? Una Noche Romantica y Oración?
On the First Friday of each month, my
husband, Scott, and I have a very special
date night of dinner and prayer. This may
sound like a corny idea, or something only
someone who “works for the Church”
would do, but this different type of date
night has nurtured our marital relationship so much, that
my husband told me to recommend it to you. Yes, really!
Basically, on First Fridays, we meet for a dinner at a restau-
rant near a parish that hosts Adoration of the Eucharist into
the late evening. As we share a meal, we unwind about the
work week, and just take time to check in with each other
beyond the “How was your day?” level of conversation.
After dinner, we drive to the local parish and spend an hour
in silent adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist. Side by side, we
sit or kneel together in the Real Presence of Christ. Often,
while we read spiritual books or the missalette or pray the
rosary, we reach out and hold hands. No words are spoken.
None are needed. We have each other and Christ is there
listening to us, and nurturing us with spiritual communion.
As we leave the chapel, we find ourselves in a different
place - closer. Offering our Time to Christ in prayer together
reminds us that He has called us to this vocation of union
with each other in Him. Together, we rediscover this inti-
mate knowledge of the Sacrament of Matrimony and come
away renewed.
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled
with his glory!” Our God invites us to such deep intimacy
and friendship with Him that sometimes we can forget just
how majestic and unspeakably holy He truly is. Sometimes,
us married couples need a different kind of date night to re-
mind us of this.
Stewardship includes offering our Time in Prayer, too.
May Christ enrich your marriages,

Calling all Married Couples! We are in need of help preparing couples
for the Sacrament of Matrimony.
Couples who serve need not have perfect
marriages, as there is no such thing as a
perfect marriage! Both of you don’t have to
be Catholic either. If you are: married in the
Church and willing to share your joys, sorrows,
failures and successes with a couple who is
preparing for marriage, we welcome you to
serve.
We will show you how easy it is to welcome a
couple to your home - on your schedule - and
go through the topics.

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends,
At the Annual Catholic Schools Dinner last Saturday, we had the pleasure to
honor the following dis nguished individuals who have posi vely impacted
our school. We are pleased to share about them with you:
Wayne McAfee, Ph.D. – Dis nguished Volunteer Wayne grew up in the Inland Empire and lives in Redlands with his wife Lisa, and sons Ma hew
(15) and Trent (14). They are ac ve THNOJ parishioners. Wayne spent 37 years in government
and received 12 promo ons before re ring as a Human Resources Director. He also holds a B.A.
in Human Services, M.A. in Education, and a Doctorate in Psychology. For 34 years, he has worked
with hospitals, Fortune 500 companies, ci es, family businesses and academic ins tu ons as an
Organiza onal Psychologist. Wayne is co-owner of Dons Bicycle Store in Rialto and Redlands, a
family business celebra ng 60 years in 2019. Wayne has served as our Academy School Board
President for the past 5 years. Thanks to his leadership, we have developed a "working board"
with improved systems and processes that consistently focus on student and teacher needs.
Sue Howard – Dis nguished Volunteer Sue, who is affec onately nicknamed “Grandma Howard”, has vast educa onal experience
working with children. She holds a B.S. in Music, a M.A. in Special Educa on, and spent 15 years
teaching special educa on. Sue is skilled at determining “what is going on with kids and how to
fix the problem.” She is an ac ve THNOJ parishioner who volunteered 3 years teaching special
needs children in our parish Faith Forma on program. She has helped Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, and swimming programs. For the last 6 years Sue has generously shared her exper-
se and me to provide tutoring for Academy students of all ages in the areas of math and
reading. Students and teachers have greatly benefited from her help.
Monica Aguilar – Dis nguished Alumni Academy graduate and THNOJ parishioner, Monica shares her exper se to teach the Catholic
faith to teens and adults. She holds a M.A. in Counseling from the University of Redlands, and
worked with students there before coming to THNOJ. Before working for our parish, she served
as a Pastoral Associate at St Thomas, Riverside, helping families with funerals and grief, annulments,
and leading adult forma on programs. Currently, Monica is THNOJ’s Coordinator of RCIA, Adult
and Youth Confirmation. She developed the semester-based class schedules for teens and adults
seeking Confirma on, and incorporated interac ve materials with online coursework. Monica
also provides one-on-one spiritual direc on for every teen annually. Because of her efforts,
many teens and adults become ac ve catechists and parish volunteers a er Confirma on. As a
side note, she recently shared with a colleague that she would rather a end a Sacred Heart
Academy Class Reunion than other reunions because SHA made such a profound impact on her
life! We are proud that this alumna is sharing the founda on in faith she received at SHA.
Thank you to everyone who is an ambassador and supporter of Sacred Heart Academy!
It is our partnership based in Gospel values that provides the backbone of our school.
God bless you,

We are in need of servant hearts who will assist
with CGS.
Do you love children? Do you feel called by the
Good Shepherd to lead children to Him?
Please consider being a catechist. We will guide
you and prepare you. If you can’t serve every
week — please do not worry! We will accept
and appreciate whatever me you offer.
Please prayerfully consider our parish needs
and contact Karen.
WHY become a Catechist this new year? You will grow
in your own faith, learn the teachings of the Church, and
deepen your rela onship with Jesus. Your Bap sm calls
you to share in Jesus’ ministry. Become a catechist!
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd con nues to bring
about joy, wonder, and a deep love for Christ, the Good
Shepherd. Children ages 3-6 years, and our adult “sharers
of faith” (catechists and assistants) experience this and
grow in faith, too..
What is so special about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)?
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a different approach to the religious
forma on of children that is based in the convic on that God and the
Child are already in rela onship. The Good Shepherd sessions use an
experien al style based in the Montessori method of teaching in a room
called the Atrium, which is designed specifically for the child’s needs.
Catechists and Parent Volunteers put the child in touch with the "sources"
through which God reveals and communicates Himself; namely, the
Bible and the Liturgy, in balanced proportion. We
present age-appropriate themes with manipulative
materials the children use to internalize and ponder
the great mysteries of our faith.
For further informa on check out our
website; watch the videos
on the CGS tab.
