of the area so they may meet and become friends
while adjusting to new surroundings. The Club is
a not-for-profit social organization with a variety
of interest groups and special activities, including
monthly luncheons and programs.
Neighbors League, Inc. (NNLI), which was
founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1939 by Theodore R.
Briggs. Out of the business of greeting new
residents grew a recognized need for a social
organization allowing newcomers to meet others
who were also new to the area. Theodore’s wife,
Bunny, lived in many cities throughout the
United States and knew the loneliness associated
with moving into unfamiliar areas. With the aid
of the Ohio Federated Women’s Club, the
Constitution and By-Laws for NNLC were
drafted. The first chapter was chartered in
Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. As the greeting service
operations were established, new club chapters
were founded. Dayton was home for New
Neighbors League until 1986 when Corporate
and Club Headquarters were moved to Atlanta,
Georgia and Cheryl Beaudreault assumed the
position of National President. Currently, there
are fourteen operations nationwide. Each chapter
operates independently within established
Board of Directors and a Club Director.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in NNLC is open to any local woman wanting to meet new people and
make new friends in the community. Prospective
members should attend a Welcome Coffee held on the first Tuesday of the month. There are two
parts to the initial membership fee. First, a one-
time lifetime membership fee of $25.00 to join
NNLC with transfer privileges to any sister chapter; this fee is forwarded to National Club
Headquarters. Second, there is a $25
membership fee that remains with the local
chapter to cover administrative expenses (this amount is pro-rated according to the month
joined). On-going members will pay a $25
annual fee each year in January.

Tennessee- Nashville
Coffee
Moving into a new community can be exciting, overwhelming, and often times, lonely. NNLC can help make the transition easier by helping women find new friends and
activities. If you know of someone new to the area, invite her to join us at the monthly coffee where she can learn more about
everything NNLC has to
The next coffee is:
Tuesday, December 2nd at
10:00am at St. Louis County Library, Daniel Boone Branch, 300 Clarkson
Road, Ellisville, MO 63011. Meet in the Red Room. (Parking on the north side (lower end) makes for easier access to meeting
rooms.)

Please take a moment and remember all of our friends who have lost loved ones this year. Remember that for them the holidays are tinged with “blue.” A hug, a smile, a warm greeting or an invitation to lunch or to shop are all small things that can mean a great deal to someone who is grieving. The joy of the holidays is in giving, not material gifts, but our love, time and care. May the God of us all grant you peace, joy and love and may each of us bring these same things to someone in need of them

Happy Holidays to all my NNLC friends. May you be blessed with good health, and good times spent with those you love during this
busy month of December. This year NNLC is not holding our annual Tinsel Trail and I have to admit I miss all the hustle and bustle of decorating the houses and seeing what clever things people can dream up for decorations. Last year was such a wonderful success that it was a difficult decision to omit Tinsel Trail from our calendar. A good guess on my part is that each and every one of you have already made plans for either going to visit or hosting friends and family members. The holidays are such a joyous time that we sometimes forget that those who have suffered the loss of a loved one don’t feel the same way at this time of year. Instead of great joy there can be great despair and a terrible hollow feeling that no merry song or brightly wrapped gift can fill. My church in Indianapolis holds a service called “A Blue Christmas” designed for people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The first year after a death is a series of “first times.” The first time you celebrate Easter without them, the first 4th of July, first Thanksgiving, and worst of all the first Christmas or Chanukah without them. It truly can be a
“blue” time of year.
Director’s & President’s Messages
Happy Holidays Ladies! This is my favorite season. I love being with my family and NNLC friends, the decorations, seeing the
wonder and excitement on children’s faces, and the snow (yes the snow). I also enjoy all the holiday activities going on in our club. You won’t want to miss a wonderful lunch at the Dream House and Tearoom. The program is a fashion show with shopping after lunch. What a
great combo, food and shopping!
Although I love everything about the holidays and getting together with friends and families, the holiday season shouldn’t be about receiving but giving to others. During the holidays, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season and it is really easy to say harsh words and snap at others but remember that it is just as easy to give a smile or say a kind word to those that seem to yank our chains. You never know what is going on in other people’s lives. They may need that comforting smile or a word of encouragement. I know recently, some of the ladies in our club were able to witness the work of a remarkable lady, Rita Swiener, the founder of Santa’s Helpers, Inc. She is the epitome of goodness and kindness. She has the philosophy of giving to others that we can all follow and practice. No matter what your plans are this season, I truly wish each of you much joy and happiness. Be safe and have a blessed holiday. I’ll leave you with this quote by Calvin Coolidge who said, “Christmas is not a time nor a
season, but a state of mind. To
cherish peace and goodwill, to be
plenteous in mercy, is to have the
real spirit of Christmas.”

CARE & SHARE COORDINATOR NEEDED
The Care and Share activity group gives our members the opportunity for outreach within our membership and
community, providing a platform for anyone who would like to volunteer for a worthwhile cause or help a member
in need. The groups includes Ronald McDonald dinners (which are already scheduled for 2015), volunteering for
Santa’s Helpers, Inc. which is ongoing at Christmastime, Haven House, collecting toiletries for Epworth Home or
Circle of Concern, perhaps coordinating meals for any of our members who undergo surgery, illness or the like, or
any other concern that presents itself. As of January, 2015 this group will be self-funding, not receiving any
financial contributions from the club. But there are many members who have other ideas as well as those who
will gladly participate or contribute if only there was a person or persons to take over the leadership of the
group. If you are interested in this position, please contact Noelle Speers:

New Neighbor of the Month…
The recipient of the Rose Pin for November was raised in Chicago, the middle child of 3 siblings. She is a people pleaser and this explains the constant smile on her face and the positive attitude. After high school, she attended college in Madrid, Spain where she met her future husband, Jerry, who was in the Air Force. They got married and lived in California.
They had three sons during this time, Scott, Chris and Andrew, and her husband worked for the federal agency ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms). They lived in Salt Lake City, Virginia, St. Louis, An- napolis, MD and Lyon, France. While in St. Louis in the 90s she worked as a librarian for the County Library in Ladue. While in Lyon, France her husband worked for Interpol. She loved France and still has many friends there. They lived there for 3 years then moved back to Annapolis. Her husband passed away in 2009 and in 2013 she moved back to St. Louis to be closer to two of her sons, Chris and Andrew. Living next door to one of her sons allows her access to 3 of her 4 grandchildren. On the day that she joined New Neighbors, during the lunch after the Welcome Coffee, she volunteered to be the Activity Chairman for “Sports”. Then she stepped up when we needed a new Secretary where she does a great job of writing up the minutes for our luncheons and board meetings. We are grateful to her for jumping in with both feet. Some of her interests include photography, reading and the movie matinee group. Please
congratulate our New Neighbor of the Month for November, 2014 – Pam Miller!

cards, whatever...
In addition to our activity groups, we’re also looking for people who can share their expertise in a work- shop. Would you be willing to run a couple hour training session on some- thing you are good at? We would really love to see your skills. The process is the same as that for starting a group. Just send a description of what you plan to cover, possible dates and location to meet and some contact information to the Happy Wanderer Editor. Be sure to give people enough advance notice so they
can RSVP to you.
