December 2014 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (at the BYC) ' Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Club The kitchen was stirring with Daniel-inspired grub; The stockings were hung by volunteers with care, In hopes that new Members soon would be there. Youth sailors were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of 420s danced in their heads; And Members in Ship Store wear and I in my cap, Had just settled in for a Jacquie night cap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bar stool to see what was the matter, Away to the new deck I flew without fail, Tore open the door and rushed to the rail. The moon on the breast of the rarely fallen snow, Gave the lustre of mid-day to the Marina below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a 50 foot Meridian and eight officers in gear. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than a chase boat the officers they came, And he whistled, and shouted and called them by name; "Now, Richard, now, Bob, now, Larry and Nick! On, Ken, on Lee, Don and Larry, be quick, To the top of the deck, to the top of the wall, Now Cruise outs, cruise outs, cruise outs for all!" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the new roof the officers they flew, With a boat full of good wishes, and our new Commodore too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard down below, The Children's Christmas party that we all love and know. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Up the stairs Members came with a leap and a bound. They were dressed in their best, on this crisp winter day, All looking for tickets to the New Year's soiree, With Frank and Dean and the rest of the Pack, The martinis will flow, you can be certain of that. Mark your calendars for there is still much to do, With Tuesday Night Trivia, Wednesday buffets too. And before you ring in the New Year with a kiss, A Lighted Boat Parade, you don't want to miss. As quick as he came, St. Nick drifted away, Leaving our Commodore to celebrate the day, And he heard her exclaim, as he sailed out of sight, "Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night." Improvement Team by House Chair Barbra Brooks (unedited)

Project day started off with Larry Booth doing handyman work on the inside of building; this and that was taken care of, including door frame around the electrical door was removed and rehung, floor seam strip was removed, area cleaned and prepared for new strip; Mark Connors and I applied strip. Mark and Bob Ritter removed and replaced all the filters for the heating/air. This involves a lot of up and down lad-der usage. Now I know why in years past installers put the vents and returns in the floor and low on the walls, no ladders!

Janet and son, Sam Booth armed themselves with gloves, buckets, rags, scrub brushes and potions to become scrubbers extraordinaire. They peeled off old party tape and gunk as they wiped and scrubbed all that could be done in the Regatta room. Janet hadn’t run out of steam and tackled scrubbing and shining behind the bar; right after she and our janitors, Antony, with Justin observing dismantled the downstairs vacuum, made repairs and what do you know, it’s picking up! Love this mechanical handyman woman.

You may notice that the white pillars in the Regatta room look almost new. Big thanks to the painting that Stephanie Hollyman did. And, Larry Booth took care of all the dark blue dings around the room.

Randy Norman is worth his weight in gold! Big thanks for he is always taking the time to help out repairing things at the club. Door knob replaced, wires tied up, and lots of other little items taken care of. Let there be light, he repaired the office lighting. I mean how can one do work in the office when two complete lighting units were out. After installed, I received a big thank you from Dilip who has been doing our bookkeeping. Member Irma McIntosh that comes in on Wednesday’s to help out in the office, told me she thought I had the lights that way for some rea-son; otherwise they would have been on. OK members, please contact House Chair when something needs repairs, or in this case, sit in the dark! Randy repaired lights all around the club; including the dishwashing room. I know on occasion we had some ‘not quite clean’ utensils or such. Same situation, banks of lighting were out above the dishwasher.

Then we have Mark Conners - who has been my right hand man for years. He is speed dialed on my phone; I call and he does his best to do WHAT EVER needs to be done, big jobs, clean jobs and the filthy disgusting ones! He is more than willing to assist whoever needs another set of hands. We all owe him big hugs and thanks.

Ken Oxman has been generous time after time with his truck and hauling skills; take to storage, bring back from storage, take it back again, thanks Ken.

Continued thanks go to Roger Williams for keeping our deck furniture in repair.

The back lounge deck area is just about totally completed. Lee Ritchey and his helping hands did a fabulous job in redoing the deck and preparing the wall a few months ago. Bill Cook, Jim McDowell, Randy Norman and Mark Conners spent many hours in October fine tuning and completing the job. The entire club owes both teams a huge thank you and appreciation for all the hard work. Now we won’t fall through the deck.

Speaking of deck - smokers need to be careful with their cigarettes and ashes; I noticed in a couple of places that someone put their cig out on the deck! This will ruin the finish. If this is going to be a problem we may just have to band smokers from the deck. This deck cost too much money to let this happen.

I am requesting members to think about lending a helping hand in January. There is quite a bit of things that need to be done around the club. This can only be done by VOLUNTEERS; this date TBD.

LADIES ROOM UPSTAIRS: I have been holding $700.00 for almost 2 years that was raised by the clothing sale and member donations. I just received a check from a club member for $1000.00 to add to this project. He and his wife looked at the men’s restroom and feel that the ladies deserve the same. I am sure most of the female members have not looked at the redo in the men’s room. Please ask your man what he thinks of that room, or knock on the door to see if vacant, and take a look. You will want to donate after you see what the ladies room could look like! Please drop off any amount of donation in the name of Barbra Brooks for the ladies room. We want to get this room redone in January. New floor, counter, sinks, faucets, and partition.

THANK YOU MEMBERS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT IN MAINTAINING OUR CLUB

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.

There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.

With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an

internet based informational blast.

It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.

Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.

I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.

As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
