The e-volution in sheet metal working
For many decades now, SAFAN has led the development and innovation
in automated sheet-metal working. In 1980, SAFAN introduced the
first CNCK servo-hydraulic press brake, followed by the patented
servo-mechatronic press brake (SMK) in 1995, the first hybrid
guillotine shear in 1999 and the first full electronic press brake in
2004, the SAFAN® E-Brake. With capacities of up to 200T and
4100 mm working length, the SAFAN E-Brake is the advanced
alternative to the conventional hydraulic press brake. With SAFAN's
Touch Screen controls, SAFAN is the first manufacturer to have set
a worldwide standard for the most efficient and simple Man-Machine
Interface. In addition, SAFAN is one of the pioneers in automated
bending cells. In 1988 SAFAN installed
the first robotic press brake in Europe.
In 2006, SAFAN introduced a
pioneering new concept: the intelligent
press brake with integrated robots, the SAFAN I-Brake.
As a pioneer of the servo-hydraulic press brake, SAFAN still
maintains a lead in its development. This is especially
demonstrated by the unique qualities of a new generation of
press brake bearing the SAFAN H-Brake name.

are many reasons why the SAFAN
H-Brake can achieve high productivity
when performing precision work,
including a construction in which
the measuring devices are mounted
independently of the side frame.
Other distinctive features are the
large daylight opening, the variable
beam opening (Q dimension), the
application of highly dynamic servo
valves, the long slideways, a stable
and fast backgauge system, a pro-
grammable light screen and the
SAFAN Touch Screen control.
Just as you would expect from
SAFAN the SAFAN H-Brake provi-
des an extensive selection of options
from which you can choose.

SWhat is immediately striking about the SAFAN H-Brake is its robust
construction. This includes a large space between the side frames and
a large daylight opening, enabling the machine to be put to optimum
use along its entire working length.
The concept was developed in order to ensure high
productivity of faultless, precision work. All machining
of the large mechanical components is completed in one
session, so that the machined surfaces are perfectly
parallel and square.
The position of the top beam is measured and controlled
with the greatest accuracy. The measurement is made
by two linear sensors that are installed on a robust
measuring device independent of the side frame. The
construction is such that the side frame assembly
does not have any influence on the angle being bent.

Both press brake cylinders are individually controlled
by an electronic servo-hydraulic system.
The adjustable and maintenance-free slideways have a
long, flat surface, making it possible to set the top
beam at an angle, so that parallelism corrections
can be easily made. Moreover, the long guides, in
combination with a well-designed cylinder construction,
make a large and flexible beam opening (Q dimension)
possible.
The surfaces for installing tools on both the top
and lower beam are universally designed, so that
a large variety of upper and lower adapters can be
implemented.

WThe same holds true for the servo hydraulic drive, due to the very quiet
internal gear pump.
Working with the SAFAN H-Brake is easy and comfortable in all respects

HThe standard version of the backgauge has two
hinging backgauge fingers that can be manually moved
along the bending line (Z axis) as well as adjusted in
height (R axis). The stop fingers are provided with
interchangeable pins. In optimum use, they permit a
maximum backgauge range of 1100 mm.
Optional equipment include backgauge systems
equipped with CNC controlled R, Z1, Z2 and
X axes, or full 3D movement with X1, X2, Z1, Z2,
R1, and R2 axes.

The SAFAN H-Brake is equipped with a heavy-duty CNC controlled
backgauge system fitted with recirculating ball screws and precision
linear ball-bearing guides. The basic model comes complete with CNC
controlled X axis.

SAFAN has developed a range of support arms of modular construction
for both light and heavy-duty sheet-metal work. This makes it possible
to rapidly set up the correct solution for each application. An optimum
combination of ergonomics and efficiency.

Movable support arms adjustable in height
All support arms can be used in combination with the
light guard.The support arms are as standard equip-
ped with brushes. You can choose from the following
possibilities:
• Support arms fixed to the machine
• Support arms movable across the front side of the
machine
• Support arms movable across the front side of the
machine and height adjustable with a handwheel
• Support arms movable across the front side of
the machine and pneumatically adjustable in height
(programmable on the control)

table front stops

Ease of use with an E for ergonomic
The SAFAN Touch Screen control system is the most efficient and simple Man-Machine Interface of
its time. Only those buttons that are needed when using the controls are visible on the screen. The
system is so simple that it makes bending child’s play, so to speak. The controls work on a PC running
under Microsoft Windows®.
New design 17” Touch Screen Control
The Safan H-Brake has a newly developed control unit
with a 17”Touch Screen. The unit is adjustable in height
which ensures optimum ergonomics for any operator
whether short or tall. A standard accessory is a key-
board. Also standard is a 100MB Ethernet UTP net-
work connection that opens up unlimited possibilities.
The instructions from the SAFAN TS control are sent to
a central processor, which in turn activates the various
axes by means of a so called CAN-BUS (Control Area
Network).
The system can be programmed very quickly and accu-
rately thanks, among other things, to a “self learning”
database of materials, tools and previous (corrected)
bendings.
The standard SAFAN TS1 control uses a numerical
bending-parameter entry and representation and can
optionally be equipped with the new software module
SAFAN Easy 2D. This software module makes it pos-
sible to make simple 2D drawings, generate bending
program’s and make bending simulations.
Options for graphical 2D/3D display and
programming
The optional SAFAN TS2 and TS3 controls make use
of Delem software and are connectable to external
programming systems.

SAFAN E-Bend S
The SAFAN E-Bend S sheet thickness measurement
system is mounted next to the backgauge finger. The
system measures the sheet thickness to an accuracy
of ± 0.01 mm. It can be precisely programmed when
measurement should take place. Measurement takes
just tenths of a second and the data in the control
system is immediately adjusted. The control system
database maintains all records of measurement and is
set out graphically.
SAFAN E-Bend M
This system consists of two pneumatic sensors on a
rail, which can be programmed at every desirable posi-
tion. Both sensors are in contact with the sheet during
the bending cycle. Before the definitive angle is bent,
the spring-back of the sheet is measured. Based on
this, a correction is entered after which the definitive
angle is bent. The values measured can be used for
other bends in which angle measurement is not possible
due to the product’s geometry.

SAFAN bending aids
With the electrically- or hydraulic driven bending aids from SAFAN, you prevent angle deviation
when bending thin sheets with large dimensions. The bending aid provides the operator with a
simple and ergonomic means to remain within set angle tolerances.
SIt is often not easy for an operator to position large
sheets. Especially during the return movement of the
top beam, it is difficult work to keep everything in hand.
Instead of having a second operator provide assistance,
it is frequently more efficient to install a SAFAN
bending aid. In most cases, it can be used by a single
operator to position larger products. In brief, along
with accuracy, productivity is increased by the SAFAN
Bending Aid, the best partner for your operator.

SAFAN H-Brake: An extremely high level of safety
The standard safety features of the SAFAN H-Brake fully satisfy European Norm EN 12622. The
drive for the top beam contains block hydraulics with protected and monitored dual valves. The safety
circuit is double channelled. The back and both sides are protected by mechanical screens with safety
switches.
SOn the left side, the side screen can be opened, so
that low-speed bending work can be performed in the
opening. The operator has an emergency switch within
hand’s reach on the control panel.
Outside of the three position foot switch, a reset button
(release button) has been installed on the operating
console. In the range of operating settings, it is
possible to block operation by means of a key switch.
Additionally, the SAFAN H-Brake offers advanced
options for extra safety, such as a programmable
safety light screen in the retractable side screen,
complete with floating blanking,1 or 2 cycle operation,
or LaserGuard protection. For both systems, the
various operating procedures can be selected by
means of a lockable selector switch in the electronic
cabinet. Using a light guard, the operator can choose
the best (fastest) working procedure for each step in
the bending process. The maximum closing speed of
the top beam set by the foot control is automatically
set to less than 10 mm/sec when no light guard or
LaserGuard protection has been activated. Only when
one of these safety systems is active, the closing
speed of the top beam may then be higher than 10
mm/sec. An extra (optional) operators console is
prescribed when 2 operators work with the machine
at the same time.
This operating console can also be programmed in
such a way that the operator can control the machine
at 2 independent points.

Automation with an E for expertise

SAFAN can supply complete, fully tested programs for
both new and existing robotic cells. You have a choice
between teach-in, off-line or parametric programming.
Naturally, you can contract out all programming to
SAFAN.
