History

1961

The company originated during the Ottoman Empire in1910 by the trading business of Haj Mahmood Jassim Al Bunnia.

Haj Mahmood Al Bunnia first started by bartering goods andquickly, became the exporter of seeds, dates, beans, fruits, wool, and other commodities to the Middle Eastin addition to being an importer.

In the 1950s to meet market conditions and with the formationof the H. Mahmood J. Al Bunnia & Sons Company (HMBS), theoperations expanded into the manufacturing of food stuffs andexpanded trade to International markets. In the followingdecades as the socioeconomic environment became more dynamic, HMBS responded by vertically expanding its business lines to maintain independence to best serve itscustomers. Whenever HMBS faced a challenge or roadblock, the company looked within to overcome and succeed. This often required establishing new companies andcompetencies such as transportation, engineering, constructionand other disciplines which quickly developed into significant enterprises within the HMBS portfolio. This intense goal-oriented focus remains a central part of the company’s fabricand serves as the main engine for HMBS’ vertical and horizontal integration.

In the almost 100 years since the company was founded,HMBS has remained a family business that has gained, held, and strengthened market leadership positions through the family’s strategy of managing its business with a long-term, regional perspective.

Background and Philosophy

HMBS’ principles come from its founder Haj Mahmood J. Al Bunnia’s strong convictionthat in order to succeed as a successful enterprise you have to serve the Iraqi communitythat we are part of by providing the best available and affordable products and services. In addition, to succeed in business endeavors for the present life in order to succeedbeyond life on earth. This translated into an intense work ethic and commitment toHMBS’ community and customers. Moreover, Haj Mahmood Al Bunnia started a charityfund with one third of his personal equity in the company. To date, the fund has built amajor public Baghdad mosque, hospitals, schools, and has initiated a scholarship thatsponsors students in need for school, university, and professional studies.

With its steadfast principles, HMBS was able to grow into a successful enterprise despite a turbulent socioeconomic environment during the past century. The cornerstone of HMBS’ success stems from its focus on the long-term coupled with the ability to avert political entanglement.

Today, HMBS employs more than 6500 employees, from a diverse ethnic, belief, and widerange of fields including doctors, engineers (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical), financialconsultants and a large number of skilled and technical employees. At HMBS, itsemployees become part of the Al Bunnia family and are thus provided the bestpossible work environment. HMBS embraces the philsophy that business successdepends on the commitment of its’ employees. Despite difficult conditions in Iraq overthe past decades, HMBS retained its employees even during the most extremeconditions -- a strong acknowledgment of its’ commitment to the entire HMBS family.
