Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I absolutely love the Sacrament of Baptism! In recent weeks I have been able to administer the Sacra-ment of Baptism to numerous babies in our Church at Holy Rosary. Soon after I arrived at Holy Rosary in July, I noticed our Church did not have a permanent Baptismal Font. I contacted our Vicar General, Fr. Tom Ranzino, a priest who probably loves this parish as much as I do! As you may know, any changes made to the sanctuary must have the approval of the Vicar General. I asked Fr. Tom for his approval of a permanent Baptismal Font for Holy Rosary. He gave me his blessing and encouraged me to move forward! Fortunately, I have a good friend who travels the world collecting religious artifacts. He sold me our new Baptismal Font at a very kind price. It is my gift to the Holy Rosary community. I feel this gift has already blessed me more than words can express! So why is Baptism so important to me?
The New Testament reveals to us that Jesus saves us, washes away our sins, and incorporates us as members of the Body of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of Baptism. St. Peter writes, "Baptism...now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him" (1 Peter 3:21-22). St. Peter also proclaimed in the Acts of the Apostles, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). Later in Acts we read, "Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name" (Acts 22:16). In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus proclaimed, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). Since the beginning of Christianity, men, women, children, and infants received the Sacrament of Baptism in their walk towards eternity. In the Old Testament, when a man convert-ed to Judaism, he would be circumcised as a sign that he was now walking with God in a covenant relationship. If he and his wife had a son, on the eighth day the son would also be circumcised and brought into a covenant relationship with God based on his parent's faith. Baptism is the new way that men and women who convert to the Church enter into this covenant relationship with God and in keeping with a hermeneutic of continuity. It is also extended to their children, including infants, who they will intention-ally raise to be disciples of Jesus Christ. In fact, St. Paul writes in Colossians 2:11-12, "In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ; and you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead." In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says, "Let the little children come to me, and do no stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs" (Luke 18:16). While imitating Jesus Christ, the disciples began to administer the Sacrament of Baptism. They not only welcomed the adult, they also served entire families. Acts 16:32-33 states "They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their wounds, and he was Baptized at once, with ALL his family."
The practice of the Sacrament of Baptism, and particularly infant Baptism, is not only Scriptural, it is historical. It has been the practice of the Church since its inception. St. Irenaeus of Lyons wrote in the year 189 A.D, "For he came to save ALL through himself, ALL, I say, who through him are born again to God, infants, children, and boys, and youths, and old men" (Against Heresies 2:22:4). In the year 215 A.D., St. Hippolytus of Rome wrote, "The children shall be baptized first. All the children who can answer for themselves, let them answer. If there are any children who cannot answer for themselves, let their parents answer for them, or someone else from their family" (Apostolic Tradition 21). Finally, St. Augustine wrote in the year 408 A.D., "The custom of Mother Church in baptizing infants is certainly not to be scorned, nor is it to be regarded in any way as superfluous, nor it is to be believed that it's Tradition is anything but apostolic (Literal Interpretation of Gen-esis 10:23). I really want to encourage you, if you haven't had your children baptized yet, please bring them to our Church so that they can receive the graces from Jesus Christ that He has in store for them in their walk towards eternity through the Sacrament of Baptism.
In Christ, Fr Josh

Being Disciples of Jesus
by: Stephen Binz The 12 disciples who followed Jesus offer us wonderful lessons on what it means to be modern-day disciples of
Jesus, but we also gain great insight into the cost of discipleship by looking at Jesus' mother, Mary, and Mary Mag-
dalene. In this Bible study, we follow the 12 disciples and the two Marys through the Gospels so that we can make their way of disci-
pleship our own way of discipleship.
Group leaders will be contacting you soon. Call Wendy at 647-3696 to join a group or start a new group.!
