The HiRadMat Facility
LMC, July 7,2010
2
A new facility being built to study the impact of intense pulsed beams on materials
It is located in the TCC6/TNC area (ex-‐WANF tunnel) and will use an LHC-‐type extracted beam from SPS branching-‐off the TI2 line in the TT60 tunnel.
HiRadMat will be an test bed, important for the design validaLon of LHC near-‐beam components before installaLon in the machine LHC collimators, machine components, material studies (bulk, superconductors), beam windows, vacuum equipment, etc…

5 The dismantling of the T1 target staLon (target + MTR magnets from old west area beams +
shielding) is necessary to allow installaLon of the TT66 beam line magnets for later intervenLons/maintenance of TT66 and TI2 beam lines for radiaLon protecLon (ALARA) and general policy to remove obsolete installaLons from the operaLonal
tunnels
So far a good fracLon of the shielding blocks & equipment has been removed
The removal of the two MTR magnets is the next step, which requires dismantling of ~30m of beam vacuum (and one quad) of TI2 line.
Dismantling steps
We would like to profit from the next technical stop on week-‐29 to do this operaRon
All groups contacted and will be available Actual intervenLon for the MTR removal ~1day End of the works scheduled for Wednesday
12:00PM The TI2 beam line will be back in operaRon on
Thursday, well on Rme for the LHC restart

All handling material available
Tested on a spare magnet and with real condiLons (slope)
OperaLonal procedures and safety issues being discussed
The magnets will be moved to TT61/TT4 for storage as spares
Real test @ EHN1 – 8% slope

9 Schedule
Schedule confirmed by all groups involved Thanks to a new sector valve installed earlier the vacuum sector is ~50-‐60m and addiLonal
pumping can be installed should need be
The removal of the remaining shielding blocks and T1 target can be done without interfering with the TI2 beam line
The cleanup of TCC6 is an important step to maintain the HiRadMat schedule on track
