H3C Wired/Wireless Solution Deployed to Build Zhongshan Hospitals Wireless Ward Inspection System
The Client
The Subsidiary Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University is a comprehensive teaching hospital affiliated with the PRCs Ministry of Health. Founded in 1936 and then affiliated with
the National Shanghai Medical College, Zhongshan Hospital was the first large comprehensive hospital to be managed by Chinese. Originally named Sun Zhongshan Memorial
Hospital in honor of Sun Zhongshan, the pioneer of Chinas democratic revolution, it was later renamed Zhongshan Hospital.
Project Background
Wireless ward inspection is a hospital information system (HIS) application. While electronic medical records (EMRs) have been widely available in hospitals for years, medical
images and cardiograms have more recently been digitalized, and now doctors can access them during patient diagnosis and ward inspections via a portable tablet PC or PDA.
Many hospitals have deployed wireless ward inspection systems for this convenience.
With a wireless ward inspection system, doctors can retrieve patients medical records, medical advice, and various check, assay and nursing information, or give medical advice
and record a change in the state of illness at the patients bedside in real time; this data is then transferred to related departments and the hospitals management terminals. A
wireless ward inspection system enables doctors to work more efficiently and conveniently, freeing them from having to carry around thick stacks of medical records and medical
certificates on every patient visit.
H3C Solution and Benefits
H3C designed and deployed an integrated wired/wireless solution consisting of access controllers (ACs), Fit access points (APs), Power over Ethernet (PoE)-enabled switches and
network management software to provide a wireless ward inspection system for Zhongshan Hospital. This solution simultaneously increased the security of the hospitals wireless
network while facilitating and simplifying the configuration and management of network equipment. Most importantly, H3Cs Fit AP solution supports flexible, fast Layer 3 roaming
that meets the HISs strict requirement for packet loss rate of network data, and also provides a reliable network platform for subsequent Wi-Fi voice service.
Employing 180 Fit APs and two WX ACs, the wireless ward inspection system seamlessly covers the Digestion Department, Hepatic Tumor Department, Integrated Traditional
Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Department, Endocrinology Department, Department of Respiratory Medicine and the Department of Cardiac Surgery in Building 1,
Building 8 and Building 9. The two ACs work in redundant backup mode and are responsible for:
Centralized configuration and management of 180 Fit APs; and
Authentication and roaming control for wireless users.
Omnidirectional antennas and APs are hidden in the ceiling, and provide the following benefits:
Aesthetically pleasing environment;
Enhances the strength of wireless signals; and
Widens the coverage area of wireless signals.
The Hospital Information System (HIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) store an enormous amount of personal patient data, and
safeguarding this information is paramount. H3Cs wireless network solution supports wireless intrusion detection systems (WIDS) and wireless intrusion preventionsystems (WIPS), which can detect illegal users and rogue APs in real time and deny access to them, preventing unauthorized personnel from accessing or corrupting the hospitalsdata.
