If your calendar goes as far as the year 2024,make sure to put a “X” on April 8th, becausethat’s when the next total solar eclipse willhappen. In the meantime, you and yourfriends or family can be eclipse hunters forone day, or 45 minutes to be precise, as you

explore the stars, the planets, the Moon and itsphases at the ongoing Planetarium show, “The Se-cret Phase of the Moon”.

While the visuals are pretty much self-explana-tory, I had a chat with music composer, MedhatHanbali, who scored this multimedia show. As a

child, Medhat was classically trained since age 4,then, he studied pop and jazz composition as wellas film scoring. Today, he is best known for his mu-sical arrangements with some of the best artists inMontreal, such as Christian Sbrocca, Félix Gray,Corneliu Montano, Richard Abel and RobertMarien.

“I’ve always been a big technology fan, and loveto see what’s being developed and released to in-corporate it in my workflow. In parallel, I’m verypassionate about the film industry and in particularabout filmmaking and I read a lot of books, watchdocumentaries, and interviews to learn more aboutthe people as well as its evolution”, shared Medhat.

I couldn’t help but wonder, how does a musiccomposer find the inspiration to score a show forthe Planetarium, aside from watching the moon andthe stars at night?

NEWS“I listen to a lot of music in different genres rangingfrom film scores to the latest pop hits and I constantlyanalyze every piece I hear. Sometimes a film has atemp track that serves as a guide to what style, instru-mentation or emotion the director is looking for. Bystudying music genres, it becomes easier to write apiece that has a specific emotion that would be appro-priate for a scene in the film, or on a show like The Se-cret Phase of the Moon”, he answered.

Sure Medhat…sounds like music composing is al-most like a therapy session! Furthermore, I asked himwhat genre he liked the most in music composing, andguess what his answer was? Thriller! For someonewho loves to explore people’s emotions through hiswork, I’d say that is a very predictable answer. Anypartying thoughts, Maestro?

“Every project is interesting and has its own chal-lenges, but if I had to pick, my favorite genre wouldbe thrillers. When I’m asked to write for a film, I liketo consider myself as an actor guiding the emotions ofthe spectator through music. In a thriller, you can per-suade a spectator that a character is good or evil, andplay with their emotions to enhance the storytellingand movie experience”, he said.Medhat is currently writing arrangements for a live

concert starring Robert Marien (Les Misérables, Notre-Dame de Paris) and guests, the Canada Day centennialconcert on July 1st, 2015. He is also signed for “OurVows”, an American romantic comedy shot in

Chicago, for which he will start working on this sum-mer. Catch The Secret Phases of the Moon at the Montreal

NEWS

Last week, at a sprawling private mansionin the heart of Montreal, Grey Goosehosted the city’s finest to kick off thesummer season in style. The GreyGoose Summer Soirée began just hoursafter the Grey Goose Masters competi-

tion where bartenders and barmaids from some of thetop establishments in Montreal went head-to-head toprove who can make the best GG cocktail.

The evening was filled with glitz and glamour andthe party provided its hundreds of guests with simpleyet delicious cocktails, appetizers and great music. The vibe was electric with surprises throughout thenight, including a horse in costume and a synchro-nized swimming performance by the Aqualilies fromLos Angeles.

The annual Grey Goose Pour Masters competitionis a prestigious, invite-only PR and brand advocacyprogram geared towards the nation’s top 50 mixolo-gists from our four major markets (Vancouver, Cal-gary, Toronto, Montreal). Historically, the programhas included three primary elements – competition, education and inspiration – facilitated by a GreyGoose brand ambassador and an outside expert.

Each regional winner will receive a trip to GreyGoose Le Logis at the end of July, where they willcompete for the national title judged by Mait̂re deChai, Francois Thibault and the on-site Global Am-bassador.

North American Grey Goose Ambassador JulienLafond travelled to these main cities as both a

spokesman and a judge. “It’s about positioning GreyGoose in the market and speaking with bartendersand owners,” Lafond explains.

“The competition is about Grey Goose bringing theindustry together and also trying to bring somethingdifferent to the bartenders,” he says.

This year’s theme was carbonation – the art of bot-tling cocktail and the different ways in which you cancarbonate the alcohol. Some familiar faces from thetop bars in the city took part in this competition – Jo-verse, Le Philemon, Rosewood, Bar St-Edouard,Bishop & Bagg, Mile Public House, La Champag-nerie, Le Lab Ludger, Ace Mercado and L’Atelier.

So, how does one win such a savvy contest? Thecriteria for success lies within the presentation, per-sonality and flavor. Lafond explains that presentationis key. Judges will pay attention to the flavour thatcomes out of the drink and the final taste it leaves ontheir tongues. But the main question is does GreyGoose shine through? Next, the bartender or bar-maids personality – do they have an interesting story? What is their inspiration behind this cocktail? Thiswill give them the opportunity to showcase theirdrink and their reason behind it. Lastly, how will theybring carbonation to life? What’s their technique anddoes it work?

There was one man who proved that he did every-thing right and that was winner Jonathan Homierfrom Bar St-Edouard. Congratulations to him and wewish him the best of luck in France!

The beautiful Aqualilies doing their thing.

Tortellini a la Gigi - rosé sauce with prosciutto and pancetta. DELICIOUS!

La Bella Italiana – simple and delicious

If you’re from the East-end, there’s no needto travel far for authentic, Italian cooking. InThe Saint-Léonard area, La Bella Italiana(La Belle Italienne), offers its customers de-licious wood oven pizza, gelato and othercomforting dishes. It’s a slice of heaven on a

busy boulevard. It’s surrounded by many other restaurants and

Theprices are reasonable and the décor is simple with alarge table seating allowing customers to spend agreat time in an intimate environment. Perfect fordate nights, group parties or just to grab a quick bitefor lunch. Unlike some Italian restaurants, La BellaItaliana is casual yet chic with an unpretentiousmenu and a variety of different flavors to satisfyanyone’s palette.

FOODWhen we arrived it was around1:00 p.m., so the busy lunch crowdhad already left, however, therewere still a decent amount of peo-ple inside the restaurant. Seeing asit was a warm, sunny day, we de-cided to sit on the terrace – some-thing we take advantage of asMontrealers the second it gets hotout! Glancing at the menu, I no-ticed their long list of “antipasti”also known as appetizers. Fromarugula salads to fried calamari andsausage and rapini, the possibilitieswere endless. Feeling a little indul-gent, we ordered the fried calamari. As for mains, there were no healthydecisions made here. The tortellinia la Gigi was a sure bet – stuffedpasta in rosé sauce with prosciuttoand mushrooms. Finally, a pizza ofcourse. Their wood-fired pizza isthe best in the area – thin, crispyand packed with tasty ingredients,we decided to go big and order onetopped with two different meatswhich included pancetta (Italianbacon), and sausage along withmozzarella, mushrooms and tomatosauce.

The calamari was a great start– crispy and not too oily, which isoften the case with this dish. It hitthe spot and teased our stomachs, making us ready to devour whatwas coming next. The tortellinilooked magnificent on the plate. They were big, stuffed with meatand enrobed in the lightest yetcreamiest Gigi sauce I had evertasted. This may be one of the bestpasta dishes I’ve ever eaten in thecity. As for the pizza, that didn’t lasttoo long on the hot plate.

The service was friendly andefficient. Unfortunately, after inhal-ing so many carbs, there wasn’tenough room for dessert. I can tellyou though, that they have over 20gelato flavors (Italian ice cream). This is just an excuse for me to re-turn for more! Until next time LaBella Italiana – I’ll make sure it’s adessert date this time!Address:

MOVIE

The old formula of dog heroes has beenaround in movies since the times of RinTin Tin—who started in the silent eraand played by successive dogs appearedin 27 Hollywood movies—and Lassiewho came in the 1940s and was a popu-

lar character in movies and TV shows. In this casedirector Boaz Yakin who also co-wrote the scriptwith Sheldon Lettich, added some more fresh ele-ments to the formula, making it less of a cliché al-though still resorting to conventional ways ofappealing to the emotional side of the audience.A text inserted at the beginning of the movie

makes the audience know that the American forceshave been using dogs since World War I. It doesn’tgo into much detail as to what their role is sincesome of their functions are not very pleasant: to de-tect landmines, a task in which many of those dogsend up shattered to pieces. Max a dog assigned tothe marine troops stationed in Afghanistan has amore dignified role: to help finding arms caches inremote villages in the Kandahar province. Marinesoldier Kyle Wincott (Robbie Amell) is in chargeof Max and the dog is totally devoted to his handlerand fulfills his mission with great efficiency. We seehim in action finding a cache of arms that suppos-edly stored by the Taliban forces. Following thatevent a little episode involving an investigation bythe military command will have important reper-cussions on the dramatic developments that wouldcome later. The Wincotts are a typical Texas family, very

much imbued with a strong sense of patriotism—the father, Ray (Thomas Haden Church) was a ma-

rine during the 1991 Iraq War, the mother, Pamela(Lauren Graham) is a fervent supporter of her son’smilitary career—who would receive the death oftheir son with understandable pain, but at the sametime they will accept it in the name of the notionthat he gave his life for a greater cause. But as it isrevealed later, that might have not been entirely thecase.Max who was at the scene of the ambush where

his handler died has become traumatized and aftersome doubt, the Wincotts decide to take him home.Max however will not become a domestic pet tooeasily. At this point the role of the younger Wincott,Justin (Josh Wiggins) would become essential.Until then, the teenager was only concerned withvideogames which he shared with his friend Chuy(Dejon LaQuake), now the arrival of Max wouldchange his own perspective on life and the ratherdifficult relation with his father. The appearance ofChuy’s cousin Carmen (Mia Xitlali) would helpfind a better connection with the traumatized dogtoo, and of course she will also make an impressionon Justin. The drama would get more action-driven with thearrival in town of Tyler Harne (Luke Kleintank) amarine like Kyle and indeed his closest friend whohappened to be present at the time when the handlerof Max had died. There are some secrets that onlyMax seems to know and of course he cannot com-municate. The new developments involving someother unsavory characters will make of Max notonly a war hero but also a hero at home.“Max” is a conventional movie, good family en-

tertainment, with some old-fashioned and staleAmerican patriotism, but somehow balanced by thedepiction of corruption in the forces as well. Ofcourse the greatest credit should go to Max (playedby a dog called Carlos).Length: 111 min.

It is asparagus season againand whenever wine lover’stalks about foods that are dif-ficult to match with wine, this vegetable always comesup in the conversation but most of the time

the problem is overstated.Just like any other ingredient it depends how you

cook and serve it and how many other ingredientsare involved in the preparation. It is very rare thatpeople serve asparagus just plain.

The traditional association is with SauvignonBlanc which can have a marked asparagus flavouritself so you need another ingredient on the platesuch as salmon, chicken or goat cheese to bring outthose flavours in the wine.

Wines that can be problematic are wines with atouch of sweetness as asparagus can accentuate that.Oaked whites are generally not too successful (ex-cept with rich buttery sauces - see below) nor arewines with pronounced tannins. Here are my sug-gestions with different asparagus preparations:With a vinaigrette - Needs a wine that can standwith the vinaigrette and won’t interfere with the as-paragus. I prefer earthy, dry, white wines such asVerdicchio or dry Orvieto to a Sauvignon Blanchere. Or a light, dry rosé without too much berryfruitWith melted butter or mayo - Where the asparagusis offset by the richness of butter or mayo but thereisn’t anything else on the plate: an unoaked orlightly oaked Chardonnay such as ChablisWith hollandaise or soft-boiled or poached eggs -Here the sauce or side dish begin to take over so gofor a mature oaked Chardonnay (one in which thewood is well integrated but which is still fresh-tast-ing), traditional white Rioja or ChampagneWith goats cheese or prawns and salad - here’s theoccasion to drink Sauvignon Blanc, especially min-

eral style Sauvignons from the Loirelike Sancerre. The goats’ cheese bringout rather than overpowering out theasparagus flavours in the wineWith grilled salmon - Semillon-

Sauvignon blends, especially from Bordeaux orWestern Australia generally work well. Also Por-tuguese style white blends. With crab - a dry Riesling or Alsace white blend, won’t overwhelm the crabWith sautéed or fried chicken - Here asparagus islikely to be the vegetable so go for a wine that willmatch the chicken such as a light or moderatelyoaked ChardonnayAsparagus risotto - You’re matching the creamyrisotto not just the asparagus. A crisp, fresh Ital-ian white such as Pinot Grigio from the AltoAdige is my ideal option or other dry Pinot Gri-giosAsparagus quiche - Alsace Pinot Blanc or ItalianPinot Bianco is a generally a good choice withquiches. Alternatively go for a light, unoakedChardonnayChargrilled asparagus with mushrooms/roastasparagus with pancetta - Here’s the chancewhen you can go for a light Loire red such asBourgeuil or Saumur-Champigny, inexpensivered burgundy or other light, unoaked Pinot NoirIn a stir fry - the sauce is likely to be the deter-mining factor here. Assuming it’s something rea-sonably light to preserve the flavour of theasparagus I’d go for new world RieslingWhite asparagus - Popular in central and south-ern Europe. My favourite pairing is youngGrüner Veltliner, though others will go for dryRiesling or even dry Muscat (though the latter israre to find and not to everyone’s taste). DrySpanish rosado is also good.
