Principal’s Message
Congratulations to the students, staff and the community of Walhallow on a fantastic week and weekend, last week,
where we participated in some wonderful activities designed to enhance Reconciliation Week.
On Saturday morning the village was filled with anticipation as we awaited the bike riders that participated in the
Reconciliation Ride. What a fabulous event! The children who met the peloton at the village entrance were very
excited to join them as they rode into the school. The riders were greeted with a very warm welcome from students,
staff and community members. Check out Facebook for some great pictures of the morning. The visitors enjoyed
morning tea very kindly supplied by staff Mrs Cronin, Mrs Payne, Mrs Clarke and myself. The raffle was very well
supported, and I’d like to thank Leanne, David and Virginia for their kind donations. We look forward to this event
being even bigger and better next year. Thank you to Mr Doug Hawkins who invited us to be part of this special day.
The weekend continued to get better when a bus load of 14 of our students headed to Quirindi to perform in the Joan
Carpenter Scholarship. I was very proud of the students and staff who put so much effort into preparing for this
occasion. The children performed three songs in language, Hokey Pokey, I am Australian and Stand By Me. The
audience was captivated by the children singing in language with pride and the cuteness of our crew. We gained first
place in the school choir section and received an overall encouragement award! Thank you to Mrs Harris and Miss
Allan for leading the choir and to members of our school community who came to support our students. A special
mention should go to QHS student Mitch Levingston for accompanying our choir – thank you so much.
Last Wednesday, five of our older students attended music workshops with Mr Garrett at Quirindi High School and
then performed in a band with over 40 students! They were fantastic! It was a very exciting moment watching our
students as they embraced this opportunity. Congratulations Jahmeika, Nyree, Curtis, Charlotte and Jada on a
fantastic performance and well done to Mr Garrett.
Next week 13 students will travel to Queensland with Miss Allan, Mr Davis, Virginia and myself. Stay tuned for our
adventures. Thank you to Mrs Hallman who has prepared the best excursion for us! (Read more about our excursion
later in the newsletter).
Walhallow PS will be open for the students not attending the excursion. Programs will continue as normal
and students are expected to attend. – Mrs Davis

K-2 Classroom Message
K-2 started our magnificent Dr Seuss English
Unit with the wonderful Dr Seuss Day. We have
thoroughly enjoyed reading and responding to
many Dr Seuss books including ONE FISH TWO
FISH RED FISH BLUE FISH, WACKY
WEDNESDAY, DAISY-HEAD MAYZIE,
THERE’S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET! and MR.
BROWN CAN MOO! CAN YOU? We love these
books and are learning more sounds and sight
words every week.
In spelling, Kindergarten is focusing on the an,
en, in, on, un, ax, ix and ox word families. Year 1
is learning about words starting with sc and sm.
Year 2 is writing the ai and oy words.
In mathematics we are getting faster at
counting backwards by 10s, 5s and 2s. We are
learning about doubles, addition and subtraction
combinations for 10 and 20 and sharing equally.
In position we are using the words such as on
top of, beside, behind, between, left, right,
north, south, east, west, north-east and south-
west. We have learnt about the chance words of
likely, unlikely, possible and impossible. Our 2D
shapes knowledge has been extended to include
pentagons, hexagons and octagons.
It was exciting to locate our homes using Google
Maps for Geography. We proudly supported our
musicians at the Quirindi High School
performance. Last Friday we made 3D cows for
World Milk Day.
2-6 Class News
This week we have been working on measurement
with a focus on length, learning how to use rulers
accurately and ordering items in size order. The
vocabulary we have been using is shorter, longer,
shortest, longest, centimetre, metre. Students have
been using our Mathletics program to secure these
concepts.
The students have been practising techniques to
assist quality conversations in the classroom around
an assortment of topics but particularly around the
texts we have been studying. They are getting very
good at using the discussion prompts and following
the rules around discussion that we made as a class.
You may have noticed that we have been inundated
with cats, kittens and dogs in the school grounds.
Please ensure your pets are secured in your yard or
house. I will be calling the council to see what we can
do to reduce this problem. Please share this message
with the community, I’m sure you can appreciate that
it is important to keep the children safe, eating areas
clean and hygienic and play areas free from
unnecessary germs. Thank you for your support in
this matter.

Breakfast Club and Fruit break Our Breakfast Club on Friday has been a roaring success. It is great to see the students utilising this school funded
program. They are enjoying the yummy healthy breakfast as well as the socialising around the table. If you would
like to come in and see for yourself or give staff a hand, you are more than welcome to join us.
Walhallow PS is a healthy school which also promotes fruit each day. Please remember to pack a piece of fruit
each day for your child to share with their class mates.
Excursion reminder - 5 more sleeps ……. Meet at school at 7.45 am on Tuesday 12 June, 2018. The bus will leave at 8am.
PLEASE bring lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea for Day One!
Children need to pack toiletries, school hats (so children can be identified in a crowd), pyjamas,
comfortable clothing and shoes. The clothing should be layered to suit the weather. For example, track
pants, shirt and jacket. The children will not be swimming, so swimmers and beach towels are not
required. All linen will be supplied from the Gold Coast Recreation Centre.
Children will not need phones, if you have any questions please message Mrs Davis on 0419461143.
Please make sure Mrs Davis has your most recent number and you remain contactable while we are
away. Remember, we will be busy so if we don’t get back to you straight away we will be having a great
time and will get back to you ASAP. We will post plenty of pictures on Facebook throughout the week.

The Leader in Me As you are aware Walhallow PS are proud followers of The Leader in Me program. We have decided to include a
Leader in Me award in our fortnightly assembly. The student chosen for the award each fortnight will be chosen
for following the habits, being a great role model or showing leadership skills.
We are also, as a school group, working towards our 100 Chart Challenge – once each challenge is achieved we
will celebrate as a school. Last week the children celebrated improved attendance with a disco. The next challenge
is to wear our hats to school each day. I wonder what the next reward will be?

Uniform Update A gentle reminder that students at Walhallow Public
School are required to wear full school uniform each
day, including black shoes and school hats.
Now with the weather getting cooler, children should
be arriving at school in the mornings with jumpers or
jackets on.
Please ensure these are labelled with your child’s
name.
We are trying to replenish our clothes pool, so if you
are having trouble providing an article of clothing for
your child, please come and see a member of staff.
Remember our school colour is maroon.

Phone Messages
The school is in the process of setting up a message bank for times when staff are on
class or duty and our office is unattended. This will take a few days to set up but if
