Dear Member,
A momentous year has gone by that saw the world order witnessing massive shifts in the life of nations and people. We hope that the coming year will see efforts to secure ecologically sustainable, peaceful and equitable futures for communities. We, for our part are moved to rethink our role, reinvent our mission and renew our resolve to strengthen linkages. The January 2019 initiatives reimagine the space as a site of harmonious coexistence as myriad artistic practices converge.
Song, they say, is a medium that taps into the innermost recesses of a community's memories, ambitions and angsts. Our musicians at the IHC Lohri Celebrations (13th) traverse a large canvas, as they reach out to the diverse hues of the festival. The charismatic Sufi music vocalist and teacher Madan Gopal Singh's inimitable band Chaar Yaar opens the festival, followed by vocalist and researcher Vidya Shah's songs of the season and closes with Sufi pop musician Jasbir Jassi, an all-time favourite with the audience.
There emerge tremendous vitalizing vibes in the theatre performances of January. Well known actor and script writer Ashwath Bhatt's solo tour de force Ek Mulaqat Manto Se (5th & 6th) brings back Saadat Hasan Manto into our midst, cherished across borders as the most pronounced chronicler of the Partition. The Pandies Theatre's Saadat Hasan: Pagaleyan Da Sardar (12th) directed by Sanjay Kumar reclaims Manto's anti-communal voice for our divisive times. Shrilal Shukla's Raag Darbari, among the most talked-about works of the last fifty years, adapted into a Dastangoi by Mahmood Farooqui, the leading exponent of the form, is a widely anticipated
th th thproduction (19 & 20 ), and Mohan Rakesh's Ashad Ka Ek Din (20 ) directed by K. K. Kohli takes us back to the royal court of Ujjayini, where a smitten Kalidasa faced with insurmountable odds, yearns to be united with his love and inspiration, Mallika. Two Fathers by philosopher and teacher Sunder Sarukkai, features Gandhi and Einstein in a freewheeling dialogue
thon what stands between them and their children (27 ). And the NTLive Broadcasts at the Habitat brings Simon Godwin's Antony and Cleopatra
th(26 ), Shakespeare's great tragedy of politics, passion and power.
Habitat Film Club members are in for a rich fare of International cinema. The Award winning, New German Cinema package offers an exciting opportunity to catch The Silent Revolution, Beuys, Days in Quiberon and Western on the big screen (9th-12th). Closely following, is a re-immersion into Bengali auteur Mrinal Sen's Absence Trilogy namely Ek Din Pratidin, Ek Din Achanak and Kharij (16th, 17th, 18th). The Habitat Film Appreciation Forum screens the 2014 feature M Cream, followed by a discussion with
stCo-director Aban Raza (31 ).
A new discussion series in collaboration with the Centre for Equity Studies aims to initiate a dialogue between members of vulnerable communities,
thpublic policy experts, and academicians (14 ). The IHC-RIS-TERI STIP Forum thorganises a timely discussion around the Science Movements in India (10 )
and the IHC-ICRIER Conversations on Urbanisation Series presents a lecture by Dr. Reena Ramachandran rethinking the role of the Civil Society (21st). Kumkum Sangari speaks in the Commemorating Gandhi Series (5th) and a panel of former diplomats and analysts looks at 70 years of India-US Relations & future prospects (8th). A panel of health experts discuss the
thconnections between junk food and obesity in young children (17 ).
The IHC Morning Ragas in the new year begins with a Hindustani vocal concert by acclaimed musician Ustad Raja Miyan of the Agra Gharana
th(20 ). In IHC Music Club, much-loved Ghazal vocalist - Dr. Radhika thChopra dwells on Ghazal as a genre (11 ). In the Opera at Habitat Series,
Sunit Tandon introduces Rossini's madcap comedy L'Italiana in Algeri th(8 ), a production designed and supervised by Nobel laureate dramatist,
thDario Fo. Not to miss Ananya Khosla's Kuchipudi recital on 4 , Anuradha thChathurvedi Seth's Kathak ensemble on 7 , Sanchita Roy's Odissi recital
st thon 21 and the Yakshagana Festival on 30 .
The IHC Walk at the Sunder Nursery by historian Swapna Liddle is going thto be exciting (27 )!
