Habitat for Humanity Advocacy Day

A Message from HFHSB Execu2ve Director, Dennis Baxter

It’s always exci$ng to meet

with our area legislators at

the State Capitol each year

and impress upon them the

need for affordable home

It is a heart-warming

experience to be able to hand

adding a lile more to their

payment each month. This is truly

the American Dream come true.

I hope and pray you will be able

to join with us for this experience

of a life$me, along with the

inspira2onal magic of illusionist

Danny Ray, an alum of the

University of Redlands and world

class entertainer. Our Master of

Ceremonies for the evening will

be Mr. Al Arguello, Bank of

Market President, Inland Empire,

a man who always speaks from

I am honored to serve as your President for

2016. As a volunteer for Habitat in one

capacity or another for more than 20 years on

build sites, as legal advisor, and now on the

Board, I bring great hope and admira$on for

the work we all do and the people we serve.

2016 is shaping up to be a fantas$c year in

which we will reach new heights in building

homes, helping people, and, of course, raising

money. We have a strong board, Execu$ve

Director, and staff. Congratula$ons to our

ReStore, its Manager, Jon Biggs, and staff for

achieving a new milestone in March 2016.

Let’s all keep suppor$ng and invi$ng our

friends to support the ReStore!

As a prac$cing aorney for 25 years it o@en

comes to my aen$on the value of estate

planning and remembering special needs in

your last will and testament or trust. Habitat

for Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc. has

benefited from the thoughBul pre-planning of

individuals who believe and support the

mission of providing home ownership

opportuni$es to those who struggle to free

themselves from the rental cycle. Neil Baker,

founder of Bakers Drive Thru, and Alba B. de

Benedet are two such individuals who

created pre-planned giving to Habitat for

Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc.

Whether your estate planning includes

monetary funding or a dona$on of appreciated

stocks, land or a residen$al lot, it is always a

good idea to solidify those plans well in

advance. Substan$al tax savings can be

obtained by dona$ng assets which have

appreciated, increasing the power of your gi@.

Consult your tax advisor and legal counsel as to

the process involved in making a gi@ a@er life.

As your Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino

Area, Inc. President, I am proud and amazed by

the selfless generosity of Inland Empire

residents who embrace our mission of being a

“Hand Up, not a Hand Out”, thus crea$ng an

environment of accountability and educa$on

for new home owners.

We are a strong and vital organiza$on. Because

of this strength we were asked in 2015 to

acquire the assets of the Big Bear Valley

affiliate. That process is now complete and has

resulted in a larger service region for Habitat for

Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc.

Please consider Habitat for Humanity San

Bernardino Area, Inc. in your estate planning

and other generous charitable gi@s.

Timothy Prince

President, HFHSB Board of

Directors

We are excited to announce that we will

begin groundbreaking on two new homes

in Grand Terrace in May 2016. This

project is possible because of a precious

woman, Alba B. de Benedet, who very

generously planned in her trust for

Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino

Area, Inc.

The Miller & Habte families will be the

recipients of brand new homes in 2016 all

because of the thoughBulness and

preplanning of two wonderful people.

Grand Terrace Homes Gearing Up to Break Ground!

A Message from the Board President

Alganesh Habte, her daughter,

Sanait, and two grandsons will

call a Habitat home their own.

The Miller family will also be proud owners of a

Habitat home in 2016.

How Can You Help?

There are a number of ways that

you can help Habitat for

Humanity San Bernardino Area

achieve our mission of a world

where everyone has a safe,

decent and affordable home. We

do this by bringing together

people in the community to build

homes, communi2es and hope.

You can do your part by:

• Volunteering at a home build:

A Brush with Kindness; or in

the ReStore

• CommiFng to a monthly

Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc. and Bank of America share an important common

goal: to provide programs, informa$on and educa$on to help poten$al home-buyers become

successful homeowners. This has been the founda$on of a partnership that has grown over the

years. Through this partnership, Bank of America and HFHSB, are able to fund and provide

Give a Gift of Hope … Help Build A Family Our partner families are deserving families who need our help. Together we can build more homes!

Please consider a gift to Habitat for Humanity today to help a family in need.

Below is a list of items that your generous donation can purchase. Donations may be made online at our website: www.habitatsb.org or you can mail them to:

Our Volunteers

are AMAZING! A volunteer is a person that actively takes on a task, responsibility, or project on his or her own accord without needing to be assigned, ordered, or told to do so. A volunteer is not paid for the work that they provide.

Volunteering is the act of taking the initiative on a task, responsibility or project. For example, a group can volunteer to help build homes with Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino Area!

We are so fortunate for all of volunteers here at Habitat San Bernardino. There are many ways to help out;

• In the office,

• As a ReStore Volunteer,

• On our new home builds,

• With our Brush with Kindness Program,

• And much more!

If you are interested in volunteering in any of these areas please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Loreta Erickson via email at: [email protected] or give her a call at: 909-478-1176, ext. 301

Volunteers Make the Difference! Recently we had the privilege of hosting

two different groups of volunteers! The

first group was from Arrowhead Christian

Academy. These young men were

amazing workers, led by their instructor,

Noel Johnson.

Our second group was a hard working

group of young ladies from US Bank!

They were such hard workers and helped

us out so much in the ReStore.

We appreciate our volunteers so

much. You all really do make

the difference at Habitat for

Humanity San Bernardino!

Thank You to Edison

Interna2onal

We would like to thank Edison

Interna$onal for their generosity in

awarding Habitat for Humanity San

Bernardino Area, Inc. a grant for

$25,000 for our “A Brush with

Kindness” program.

This program helps preserve

homeownership by partnering with

homeowners struggling to maintain

their home. When basic expenses

exceed income month a@er month,

home maintenance is the usual casualty.

Years of deferred maintenance can

cause a downward spiral of home

deteriora$on and unsafe living

condi$ons. This o@en hits our disabled

vets and senior adults the hardest.

We are pleased and proud to partner

with Edison Interna$onal to help our

community.

A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) HFHSB will con$nue its efforts in assis$ng families with home repairs during

2016. HFHSB is commied to comple$ng a minimum of 10 “A Brush with Kindness”

projects each month. Families within San Bernardino County communi$es will be

selected based on the following:

• Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc. selects partner families

based on income, need and willingness to partner.

• Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc. uses volunteer labor and

donated materials to keep costs low and take no profit for their services.

• Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino Area, Inc. serves low to very low

income families as set by HUD guidelines.
