Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo

Kuruma Ningyo is a form of one-man puppet handling, where the puppeteer sits on a wheeled box cal led a rokuro-sha to control the puppet. This is the world’s only puppet show where the puppets perform on stage with their feet touching the s t a g e . T h e N i s h i k a w a Koryuza theater in Shimo-O n g a t a - M a c h i h a s succeeded this tradition and i s c u r r e n t l y a c t i v e l y promoting it overseas.

Many shops established in olden times and reminiscent of a post town remain in the Yoka-machi and Yokoyama-machi areas situated alongside the Koshu-Kaido Highway.T h e H a c h i o j i Y u m e A r t Museum and Yoka-mach i Yumeka ido Park ing were completed in 2003 to produce a u n i q u e p a n o r a m a t h a t integrates both old and new town scenery.

Koshu-Kaido HighwayA relat ively peaceful road scattered with restaurants, grocery stores, a bookstore and other shops. Certain select shops are popular with young people, and window-shopping can be very enjoyable here.

Renga DoriA useful road for planning meet-ups with many fast food shops and cafes. Keio Hachioji Stat ion connects d i rect ly wi th the Keio Shopping Center, and the surrounding area is always bustling with passengers and shoppers.

Higashi Hoshasen I Road

T h e l a r g e p r o m e n a d e immediately outside the station is called the Mulberry Bridge since Hachioji has been known as a textile town with a large number of mulberry trees. Many buses arrive and depart r i g h t u n d e r n e a t h t h e promenade.

Nishi Hoshasen You Road

Black Wall and Hachioji Geisha GirlsHachioj i f lour ished as the largest post town along the Koshu-Kaido from the end of the Edo Period to the beginning of the Showa Period, and in the center of the city was a large collection of restaurants and an entertainment district with bars served by more than 100 geisha girls. The remaining part of the Black Wall displays the prosperity of those bygone days.

Hachioji TextilesHachioji textiles are historically as famous as Kiryu and Nishijin textiles since the Edo Period. Knitwear, neckties, and scarves are produced with the use of this technology.
