CHAYN Chayn means solace in Urdu.

To empower women against violence and oppression, Chayn - a global volunteer-led digital network - was created. Started from one laptop in London, the volunteer network now spans more than 75 volunteers across the globe. Chayn’s founding team of

volunteers believes that leveraging technology and digital media is a secure and innovative way of reaching vulnerable women.

Our first project took us to build a crowdsourced website to

support women experiencing domestic violence in Pakistan with the help of 75 volunteers globally in 3 months. Since then we

have held events to engage people from different backgrounds in brainstorming solutions to violence against women; enabled charities to empower more women through developing content and training manuals; and run campaigns to raise awareness for

the problems women face.

This hack pack is another example of how volunteers collaborate to create innovative tools to empower others. If you would like

ABOUT YOUR TEAM [03] TIMELINE OF PROCESS The Three Phases of Design  The Chayn Design Process has three phases: Exploring, Problem Solving and Building. The Exploring phase starts by approaching and defining the challenge, and researching the appropriate solutions. The Problem Solving Phase involves narrowing down the solutions, evaluating and improving the solutions. The Building Phase involves building the prototype into a tangible design.

IDEAS & RESEARCH [01] TEAM KNOWLEDGE Filling in the Gaps – 15 minutes Now that you know what your challenge is and what you are responsible for, it’s time to figure out what you think you know about the context surrounding the challenge and how to fill in your gaps. (1) WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE CHALLENGE? (2) WHAT ASSUMPTIONS HAVE YOU MADE ABOUT THE CHALLENGE? (E.G. THAT PEOPLE HAVE ACCESS TO MOBILE PHONES OR LAPTOPS?)

IDEAS & RESEARCH [02] HOW TO APPROACH YOUR PROBLEM How Might We? – 15 minutes  This section will help you figure out which approach you should be taking with your problem. Approach your challenge with the question: “How can we…”, i.e. how can we solve this, how can we improve this, how can we fix this, how can we change this. (1) FRAME CHALLENGE AS “HOW MIGHT WE… SOLVE/IMRPOVE…” (2) STATE THE IMPACT YOU ARE TRYING TO CREATE. (3) WHAT ARE THE SOLUTIONS TO YOUR CHALLENGE? (4) WHAT IS THE CONTEXT SURROUNDING YOUR CHALLENGE? IDEAS & RESEARCH [03] EVALUATION OF YOUR IDEA Challenging the ideas – 15 minutes  Evaluating your idea is one of the most important things you can do before you begin to develop it. Ensure that you challenge your solution, and that you research the fundamental roots of your challenge. (1) DESCRIBE THE CHALLENGE.

IDEAS & RESEARCH [04] SUSTAINABLE ACTION Ensuring that the idea is financially appropriate – 15 minutes  Your solution and/or idea needs to be financially appropriate. It needs to make fiscal sense for which organization or company is going to be utilizing it. Doing some quick rough calculations to estimate the total costs of start up, maintenance and the resources that you need will give you a good idea on whether or not you need to simplify your idea and make it more cost effective. IDEAS & RESEARCH [04] SUSTAINABLE ACTION Sustainability, Replicability and Scalability – 15 minutes  In addition to costs, you must ensure that your idea is sustainable, and that it can either be replicated or scaled. THE USER EXPERIENCE [01] THE USER PROFILE Who is going to be accessing your solution – 15 minutes  Now that you’ve decided on your solution or idea, it is incredibly important to figure out who will be using your solution or idea, and how they can access it. Before creating the user journey or the user experience map, it is important to figure out more information about the individual or groups of users.

THE USER EXPERIENCE [02] THE USER EXPERIENCE What is the story? – 30 minutes  WHAT IS THE USER STORY? The user story is the starting point for your scenario and helps to frame your solution in the right context.

HOW TO CREATE IT  

VISUALISATION As a team, it’s important to visualize the experience that the user might have with your solution or idea over time. Visualise right from the very start, whether that’s the action of your user picking up your phone or seeing your advert somewhere. Break the process into microscopic sized actions. How will the user find out about the product or service? What is their first experience going to be like? How does that experience end? THE USER Give your user a name. Research their background and create a bio. How old is your user? Is he or she married? What do they do? What is a day in their life like? (3) KEY MOMENTS Identify the key moments in the user journey. How can you make them easier, more efficient, more cost-effective, a better experience for your user? (4) EVALUATION Discuss the experience map. Do you need to rearrange it? Are you missing anything? How can you make it simpler? How can you make it better?

THE PROTOTYPE WHAT TO PROTOTYPE Building the idea Prototypes enable you to share your ideas in a tangible form, and learn how to refine it.

CREATE A MOCK UP Build the mock up of your digital tool or website with simple sketches of the screen on paper. Use this opportunity to evaluate the prototype. Keep it simple, rough and at a low fidelity. Evolve it over time. Map out the different processes of your idea, try different versions. CREATE A MODEL Once you have your mock up, use that visual aid to start creating a working prototype of your product or service. CREATE A ROLE PLAY Once you’ve created the model, act out the scenario of your user experience. Try on the roles of the people involved in the situation and figure out the questions that they might be asking. CREATE THE NARRATIVE Tell the story of your idea. Describe what the experience will be like. CREATE THE ADVERT Create a short advertising and marketing campaign for your product or service. Ensure that it promotes the best parts of your idea. Quickly creating marketing materials is one way to help you explain your idea to potential customers and give them something tangible to respond to.
