  • A Fire on the Synagogue Lawn When Janine and I moved into a new housing development in Worcester, Massachusetts several decades ago, there was an empty lot across the street. One Lag B’omer, our Israeli

friends Lenny and Ziva built a bonfire there and persuaded Phil, our Italian American neighbor, to bring his guitar.

Before you know it, the whole neighborhood joined in, singing and roasting marshmallows together. In Israel, Lag B’omer is marked by thousands of bonfires across the country. Now, there was Lag B’omer in Worcester, too.

Six years later, I said to myself: this is too good to keep a secret. So, we began the tradition of having a Lag B’omer bonfire at the synagogue, Beth Israel. And, when Janine and I came to HNT 17 years ago, this was one of the traditions we brought with us.

The way we ‘do Jewish’ can change over time. When I was a child at a Jewish day school in New York, there was no bonfire. For us, Lag B’omer was fun because we got to go to a park and have color war all day. It was also the only day we were allowed to wear sneakers to school.

The specifics of how I celebrated Lag B’omer as a child and later, as an adult, were not precisely the same. But, there was a common thread, a spirit of joy.

As Herzl-Ner Tamid moves into the next chapter of our future, I look forward to seeing how not yet thought of expressions of that joyous spirit will be invented. And, I am hopeful that the unexpected image of a fire on the synagogue lawn will inspire the next generation of our community to create new forms of meaning and delight.

    JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS UPDATE

As discussed last month, the various community partners continue early stage discussions about a potential community campus, while the City of Mercer Island proceeds through the zone development process.

The city issued its first draft of the Community Facility zone design standards earlier in the year. These standards are intended to guide future development of any Mercer Island property zoned as a Community Facility.

The Planning Commission has hosted one of two working sessions for committee members to discuss the draft standards. The second working session occurred on April 17. From there, the final guidelines will be prepared and reviewed, and a public hearing will follow, likely early to mid-summer. Final voting follows that hearing.

The City’s goal is to prepare a well-crafted set of draft regulations that fulfill the intent of the City Council. We will continue to monitor the City’s process and provide input as appropriate. To track the City of MI process, visit: https://letstalk.mercergov.org/JCC-rezone.

Friendship“Make for yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend, and be in the habit of judging others favorably.” -Pirkei Avot 1:6Soon after our Purim festivities here at HNT, I

traveled to Washington DC to attend the AIPAC Policy Conference. For those who haven’t been before, AIPAC is probably not what you’d expect! In addition to politics and history, the conference sessions cover science, innovation, culture, sports, and music. The group of 18,000 conference attendees is diverse culturally, religiously, geographically, and politically – across the spectrum from liberal Democrat to conservative Republican. Truly, it is an experience unlike any other!

Because so many people attend this conference, it also presents an opportunity to reunite with friends from across the country, and to reconnect with people you might not have seen in years.

This year, I was delighted to run into a classmate from rabbinical school. We spent years in the same classes, seeing each other every day. Now that we are rabbis in different cities, we hadn’t been in touch in months. But when we saw each other at the conference, we began talking right away and spent over an hour catching up about life and work. At the end of our conversation, she remarked to me how helpful it was to be in touch with a friend who understood what she was going through – and I felt the same way.

Pirkei Avot, Teachings of our Ancestors, teaches us about the value of friendship. Its instruction to “acquire” a friend teaches us that friendship requires effort, that friendships are valuable. In our moments of exasperation with our family and co-workers, friends can be a great source of comfort and advice; in our moments of celebration, friends can make our joy even sweeter. This month, I invite us all to a new appreciation of friendship and what it can bring to our lives. Call (or text) a friend today!

  • The Masa trip to Philly and DC from April 7-11 was a huge success. A very special thank you to Gwenn and Dean Polik for support of this exceptional program now thriving at HNT. Our meeting with Senator Maria Cantwell was extraordinary. Students were able to shake Senator Cantwell’s hand and lobby for causes close to their hearts

like preventing Anti-Semitism and white supremacy, combating gun violence, and protecting immigrants and families. We also met with legislative aids representing Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Congressmen Adam Smith, and Congresswoman Kim Schrier. Our meeting with Attorney Josh Shapiro was so inspiring. All our students did a fantastic job and shined with their important messages of inclusivity and honoring human dignity. Audrey Covner and Michaela Covner joined me for this educational adventure and my deepest appreciation goes out to them for helping to lead a fantastic trip. My article last month outlined the trip in more detail and this month hear directly below from some of the students who attended the trip:

Ariella Nelson: The Philly/DC trip was super fun. I got the chance to lobby for issues I’m really passionate about to Senator Maria Cantwell, which was an amazing experience. We ate some of the best desserts on the east coast, from Dunkin’ Donuts to rolled ice cream to Rita’s Water Ice. We Segwayed our way around DC, got a chance to speak with Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, and played games all throughout.

Boaz Malakoff: Our days in DC were a great conclusion to our trip. DC is a fascinating city: I felt like I was a part of something important, a feeling that only increased after we lobbied with Senator Cantwell and Congresswoman Jayapal’s aides. In both of the lobbying meetings, I felt like I was making a difference in our country's future, which was amazing. Finally, although extremely heavy, the Holocaust memorial museum made me appreciate my Judaism and that I live in a country where I can practice Judaism without fear of persecution.

Brooke Mihlstin: The highlight of the trip for me was getting the chance to lobby. Even though my group didn't get to meet with our representative, it was impactful to talk about topics that mattered to us as teens and how we can be the next generation of change. Also learning about the aspects of lobbying was a life long skill that I will always remember.

Kaela Krigel: I really enjoyed the trip to Philly and DC because I got to meet one of our two senators and have a meeting with a legislative aid. This trip really helped me see the importance of political activism. Now I know that one person can really make a difference. I enjoyed lobbying because it gave me the opportunity to talk to my Senator about legislation that I was passionate about. My friend from Camp Solomon Schechter joined us for one of the days and that was really nice because I got to see her outside of camp. I can't wait to go on the trip next year.

Evan Lamin: I'd say my highlight of the trip was just being in DC itself. Being able to see real state Senators and talk with them was just amazing. Being with a community that cares about the issues we talked to them about really added to the experience.

Lily Gotel: My highlight of the trip was going and touring around DC as well as Philly and lobbying. I liked learning about the history behind all the buildings in both places and the Jewish community and population. I liked meeting with Senator Maria Cantwell and hearing her opinions and views.

Sophia Dondisch: I really enjoyed this trip. Lobbying was especially eye opening and I loved having that unique experience. The chaperones were absolutely amazing and super nice. It was such a great experience and I'm excited to keep going on this trip throughout my high school career.

Before our intense and meaningful visit to the Holocaust Memorial in DC, we met and heard the story of with Joel Nommick who survived the Shoah.

The Segway tour was a unique and fun way to see and learn about the history of the monuments, memorials, and buildings in our nation's capitol.

Students on the Masa trip met with Senator Cantwell and lobbied on important issues. At the conclusion of the meeting, they also were afforded the great opportunity to meet Senator Schatz of Hawaii.

Lobbying was a highlight for all our students in DC because it was their opportunity to speak their truth and voice their important message
