WHY HALLOWEEN IS CELEBRATED
The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festivalof Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wearcostumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, PopeGregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor allsaints.Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of thetraditions of Samhain. The evening before was known asAll Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.
