What is Halloween?

• Halloween is celebrated on October 31st

• It dates from the 19th century in Britain although it possibly began earlier

• Halloween is the day before All Saints’ Day on the Catholic calendar

• All Saints Day is also known as ‘All Hallows’ Day’• Therefore, the name Halloween is thought to

mean ‘All Hallow’s Eve

The History of Halloween

• In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church made 1st November a church holiday to honour all the saints. In Medieval times people prayed for the dead the night before this date.

• Another name for All Saints Day is 'All Hallows' (hallow is an old English word for 'saint'). The night before became known as ‘All Hallows Eve, the last night of October.

• Many places in England combined Halloween with Mischief Night (celebrated on 4 November), when boys played all kinds of practical jokes on their neighbours.

member of the Gunpowder plot

The Gunpowder Plot

• A group of English Catholics tried to assassinate James I of England, a Protestant king

• They placed a cache of explosives under the House Of Lords

• Guy Fawkes was found guarding these and was arrested

TORTURE AND EXECUTION

• Guy Fawkes was tortured and questioned until he confessed the names of the other conspirators

• He was hanged, drawn and quartered on the 31st January 1606

• Londoners were encouraged to celebrate James I’s escape from death by lighting bonfires

• Some burn effigies of Guy Fawkes• Fireworks are also a part of the celebrations
