Time to allow: 15 - 40 minutes You can choose between the short and long movie clips to suit the time available. Both versions work in two teams as both storyboards will divide evenly in half.

HOW TO USE•If you have 4 or more students, split them into two teams.•Go through and demonstrate the Spooky Sounds Cards. Allow one or two students to try each one out. Lay the cards out as you go - somewhere everyone can see them. •Watchthecliptogetherandbrieflydiscusswhatmusicmightgowellwithdiffer-ent parts.•Give each of the two teams the storyboard for their half of the movie.•Encourage the students to experiment and make notes of what music they want to recordforeachpart.Theycanusethestaffprovided,oranyotherwritingordraw-ing that will cue their memory. It’s helpful if both teams have a device they can watch the movie clip on.•Let the teams know how long they have left periodically and help them if they’re stuck.•Wheneveryoneisfinishedcomposingrecordthefinalisedversionforeachteam.•If you have movie software you can combine the audio with the video clip provid-ed. If you do not have software to do that, simply play the audio and video simulta-neouslyondifferentdevicestowatchthecombinedeffecttogether.

ASSEMBLYTo assemble this game:

•Print out either the short version storyboard (pages 3-4) or the long version story board (pages 5-10).•Download the movie clip or open it up in YouTube using these links:

•DownloadfromDropbox.•StreamtheshortversiononYouTube.•StreamthelongversiononYouTube.

•You also need some kind of playback device for each group of students so they can see the movie as they are working on it. A tablet, phone or laptop will work well.•If you want to record the composition you will need a smartphone, iPad or mic and computer.•To create a complete edited movie at the end you can use iMovie or other video editing software – but you may deem this an unnecessary extra step.•You may also like to have the Spooky Sounds Cards (from the VMT library) to hand to use as inspiration and starting points for the composing.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESComposing projects like this teach students about form, theory and how to work to-gether as a group. The silent movie style project gives them a strong narrative structure to follow so that they can get creative within that framework.
