If you haven't had chance to visit our lovely new Carers Centre at
62/64 Church Street Runcorn WA7 1HD please come along
and have a look round. Our official opening will be on May
4th 2016, when carers, our funders and local councillors will
be invited to celebrate the new, more suitable hub for
carers. A big thanks to Halton Borough Council, Halton's
Clinical Commissioning Group, Mersey Ward and Runcorn's
Town Team who all contributed towards the cost of the
refurbishment. Your support is much appreciated!
We've produced a brilliant new Carers Information Book which covers
all the services we provide, how we can support you and what your
rights are as a carer. The Information Book will be provided to all new
carers. Registered carers can request a copy if they wish.
As the hub for carers' services in Halton, we are thrilled to see the
results of the Which? Report and the results of our own carers' annual
survey detailed on page two.

FORMER CARERS' GROUPIf your caring role has ended due to bereavement or the person you care for goes into a home
and you are not part of their Care Plan you can remain with the Carers' Centre for twelve
months. You can also join our Former Carers Group which is organised by Beryl and Marjorie.
The group meets on a monthly basis and all group members were once feeling like you are
now but have managed to restart their social lives after being a carer. They enjoy visits to the
theatre, lunch and evenings out, day trips and bi-monthly get-togethers. For more
information contact the Carers' Centre.

Which? Area is Best for Carers?
Halton Carers Centre staff – delivering our best for unpaid carers in Halton.
Consumer champion Which? ranked Halton as the best in England for carers to find out the
information they need, according to a report released in February 2016.
They reported that only 15 per cent of residents in the borough had difficulty accessing advice
and support. Halton was followed by the London Borough of Redbridge (17%) with neighbours St
Helens (18%) in the top-three areas.
The Information came from a Which? analysis of most recent data from the NHS Health and
Social Care Information Centre. In addition, Carers' Quality of Life score and Carers' Social
Contact score were both better than national and regional averages. The data was released as
Which? launched a free information hub for unpaid carers. The hub is designed to provide advice
for unpaid carers on a wide range of topics which can be found on

A big thank you to all the carers who took part in our annual survey! Rather than ask everyone the
same questions we took a random sample of 1,000 carers from our database. We're delighted that
more than 250 of you responded. The survey produced some fascinating facts:
Halton Carers Centre 2015 Survey Results
Carers' WeekThis year Carers' Week is focussing on building Carer Friendly
Communities to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges
carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and
communities throughout the UK.
Within Halton we will be encouraging a Carer Friendly Community at our “Carers Shop” at
Runcorn Shopping Centre. So pop into the “Carers Shop” during Carers' Week between
10am and 4pm Monday to Saturday for help and information from Halton Carers Centre and
other carer- related organisations. A similar service will be available at Widnes Market on
Wednesday 8th June.
We are also offering professionals and carers in Halton an opportunity to have a “Tour n Talk”
when we will show you around our Carers Centre in Runcorn and provide an overview of our
services from Monday 6th June – Thursday 9th June at either 11am or 2pm. If you
would be interested in accessing the “Tour n Talk” please contact the Carers'
Centre to book in.
Nearly 62% of our carers were caring for
more than 50 hours per week (compared
with 30% of the general carer
population).
More than three-quarters of
respondents said breaks were important
to them.
45% said their health had worsened as a
result of their caring role.
More than half of our carers did not have
time to participate in leisure activities.
Just under two-fifths of carers said caring
had affected their work. Nearly half of
these had been forced to give up work
entirely.
70% of respondents had been caring for
more than 5 years.
We were pleased that the majority of respondents were satisfied or
very satisfied with our services, but there is always more we can do.
A major concern was changes to legislation and how these might
affect benefits to carers and cared for people. You also gave us plenty
of ideas for activities in our new Centre.

A service which helps families cope day-to-day with dementia has seen such a success in Knowsley
that it is now expanding into Halton.
The Admiral Nurse Service, which is provided by specialist dementia nurses, will be based in the
community and the nurses will work with local families to ensure they are better able to understand
and cope with the changes which can occur with dementia. They will work with the family to make
informed decisions about their future needs, to enable the family to stay together for as long as
possible.
Admiral Nurses play a unique role in care management by joining up the different parts of the health
and social care system, and help address the needs of family carers and people with dementia in a
coordinated way.
The Admiral Nurse Service is delivered by 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and works in
partnership with Dementia UK which governs and monitors the service. The service has been running
in Knowsley since 2011.
Margaret Dempsey, aged 83, lives in Knowsley and cares for her husband, Alf, who is 85. She said: “My
admiral nurse is Jackie; she first came in my door as a nurse, but went out of my door a friend. The
help and advice she gave me about dementia was second to none.
At first I couldn't understand why I needed support when it was my husband who was ill, but I soon
realised the demands of looking after someone with dementia on your own can make you ill.
Jackie helped me to understand the illness so that I could cope better. She became my comfort
blanket at a time when I needed it most. I'm very grateful to her.”
Norah Flood, Clinical Director at 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are
delighted this service is expanding to Halton. Our admiral nurses do an excellent job. They work hand-
in-hand with families, helping them cope with the fear, uncertainty and difficult everyday reality of
dementia.”
Hilda Hayo, Chief Admiral Nurse and CEO of Dementia UK, said: “The expansion of the Admiral Nurse
Service to Halton is testament to the excellent support that our admiral nurses give to families living
with dementia. We strive to give the help of an admiral nurse to everyone who needs one and are
pleased to be able to support more families in both Halton and Knowsley.”
To access the service, you must be caring for a family member with
dementia and be registered with a Halton GP. Speak to your GP or
healthcare professional for details, or you can self-refer by
calling the admiral nurse team directly on 01928 753162.

Fundraising for Halton Carers Centre
Sue Armes and Eula Hersey from Home Instead Senior Care Frodsham, Runcorn and Widnes are
walking 54 miles along the Camino, a pilgrimage route in Northern Spain from Santiago de
Compostela to the end of the world, Finisterre, to raise money for Halton Carers Centre.
Eula explains what their task will be as follows:
“In June 2016, we will be walking 54 miles/ 87 kilometres over four days to raise much needed
funds for Halton Carers Centre (to help and support carers of people with dementia). We arrive in
Santiago on Saturday 4 June and will be attending the Pilgrim's mass on the Sunday at the
Cathedral before hitting the road on the Monday.
We have worked hard at mapping out our route and will be carrying what we need on our backs
although we have cheated slightly and booked cheap hotel rooms rather than staying in the
pilgrim hostels – we're a bit too old for that. We are hoping to keep people up to date on the walk
via Facebook and Twitter and will be proudly wearing our Halton Carers Centre t-shirts. We are
currently fundraising and asking people to sponsor us and / or buy a raffle ticket. We
also ask you all to spread the word of our walk. We have paid for our flights and
hotels ourselves so every penny raised goes directly to the charities.”

The theme of the next Halton Dementia Action Alliance event will be advanced care
planning and end of life. Although an emotionally charged subject that for some can be
difficult to think about, the importance of talking about it cannot be underestimated.
Advanced care planning enables you to make choices and decisions about your future
care, in case there is a time when you cannot make these decisions for yourself, and
make arrangements so that your family have power to act on your behalf if you wish
them to do. For more information about this upcoming event, please contact Halton
Carers Centre or [email protected]

Scope's Face 2 Face is a free befriending service, offering one to one
emotional support for parents of disabled children or those with
additional needs. We also provide a wide range of free events across
Halton, from family fun days, parent information workshops and regular
support coffee mornings.
We are grateful to have received funding from the Big Lottery to grow and expand the valuable
work Face 2 Face Halton provides across the area. Thanks to this funding, we are able to
continue on with our Befriending, and in fact we will be recruiting for new Parent Befrienders in
the near future, with our next training course due to start in September.
A Face 2 Face Befriender is a parent who also has a child with a disability or additional need and
has been trained to offer emotional support. All our Befrienders are local volunteers who have
been carefully selected to ensure they will be able to listen sensitively and understand how a
parent is feeling. Befriending provides an opportunity for parents to talk honestly about how
they feel to someone who can really understand and not judge them. If they need other kinds of
support our Befrienders can signpost to other services that can help.
Our Sleep Solutions team will also be introducing sleep support across Halton in the near future
to raise awareness, skills and understanding around sleep difficulties specifically related to
children and young people with additional support needs, more news to follow soon on this
exciting development!
I hope to get chance to meet you very soon in my role as Halton Coordinator! If you would like to
find out more about Face 2 Face, take a look at or please
