The Hambantota International Airport is the new international airport currently being constructed near the town of Mattala, Hambantota District in the south of Sri Lanka. Hambantota International Airport will be Sri Lanka's second international airport after Weerawila International Airport

The airport is estimated to cost US $210 million and by the end of construction will cover 2,000 hectares in total.

This project will have two phases and is expected for completion in 2011.

The initial construction will cover an area of 800 hectares. The airport will have one runway and a taxi way that will be expanded in the second stage to allow lager planes to land

3. Structures

AerodromeHambantota will have a new aerodrome designed to meet the ICAO specification for code 4F. Annual Service Volume of the aerodrome at short and medium/long term planning horizons will be 30,000 and 60,000 movements respectively.

RunwayRunway Length: 3,500 meters in length with a width of 75 meters. Asphalt

Taxiways60 meter long taxiway from the runway centre line to the edge of the apron with 10 parking positions initially with the total being 80.

TerminalTerminals and other buildings will occupy a proposed 10,000 square meters to accommodate 800 peak hours and 100 domestic passengers both ways.

This project is expected to stimulate the development and infrastructure in the area, raising living standards of the people

It will also benefit other parts of the country. It will definitely have a massive positive impact on tourism in the Southern Province

Project will not affect agriculture in the area

The new airport would serve as a cargo hub to the Eastern Province along with the Hambantota harbour which will be opened around the same time.
