e-waste issue is both fascinating and frustrating, and his passion for the topic will make this an interesting talk for those with both a technical or non-technical interest in technology".

From the President ZL3TAO Last year there were meetings for those interested in a particular aspect of Amateur Radio. Here is a proposed schedule for similar meetings in 2019. Date Subject

February 27th Homebrew

March 27th TBA

April 24th Contests and Awards

May 22nd Homebrew

June 26th TBA

July 24th TBA

August 28th Homebrew

September 25th TBA

October 23rd Contests and Awards

November 27th Homebrew

The night has changed from the third Thursday to the fourth Wednesday, and 4 months have TBA. TBA is not a new aspect of Amateur Radio that you have not heard of before – it is “To Be Advised”. i.e. if there is some aspect of Ham Radio that you think deserves a meeting then let me know and a meeting will be scheduled

Subscriptions for 2019 are due and are only $25 if paid by 31st March. We are planning to send a personal reminder of the pending increase before the end of March – please deposit your sub in the club bank account with your callsign as a reference soon so that there are less reminders to send net month. If you are unsure if your sub is still outstanding then email the Treasurer.

Secretary Rory’s Ramblings - ZL3HB

All quiet on the Western Front!!! Or so it seems from way out here. Haven't been in much over the holiday season but all seems well. Mark & Rick & others opened up for a Boxing day BBQ which was good. Tuesday evenings have continued and the brown box has been emptied a couple of times so all good. Sad to have lost Alan ZL3GX then Ross ZL3TFK suddenly. Also I gather Gavin ZL3GS who I think was briefly a club member. We should all make the most of each day!!! So a new year begins and we all need to think again about what we want from the club. All ideas and suggestions welcome. Ian has some regular events planned so hopefully you can all participate in some of them. Subs are again due at $25 and we have a new Treasurer in Peter ZL3IA who is often there Tuesday evenings. As I now live 70KM away you probably won't see quite so much of me although I may be there this coming Tuesday briefly!!! Another Hamcram on 16/17th Feb with Radiotek on 24th March so a busy year again no doubt. See you all in Feb. Rory ZL3HB.

Amateur of the year 2018 Congratulations to Graham Lees ZL3GSL for his award, rightly deserved for all his amazing work in staying abreast with the latest technology.

Now I have seen everything – ZL3KB There is a group of Hams that form a net, using morse to communicate. Not unusual you say, but these guys only communicate using the internet. Yes, Morse over IP. See http://8ch9azbsfifz.github.io/moip/. A key and buzzer used with Skype will do, and you can even watch the guy sending to you! However, these guys get technical with custom hardware. “We believe the cultural legacy morse code shall live on in the information age” . I always thought CW was a low bandwidth mode?

Ross Weir ZL3TFK SK

It is with sadness and regret, we have to announce the passing of our friend Ross ZL3TFK on January 17th. Ross died in his sleep while on holiday at Akaroa, aged 76 years. Not only was Ross a valued member of our amateur radio club, but his hobbies included membership of the Royal NZ Air Force Band, Children’s Theatre, and more latterly Bee Keeping, Choir membership, Pipe Organ tuning, Senior Member of the NZ Electronics Institute, Vintage Radio Society, and public address system support of community shows around the district.

Alan Chapman ZL3GX SK We regret to announce the passing of Alan Chapman in December 2018, aged 76. For more than forty years, Alan provided communications support for Civil Defence in Christchurch. As well as his involvement locally, Alan was also the Awards Manager for the National Association of Radio Amateurs, and the International Amateur Radio Union for the Asia / Pacific region. So many important tasks around the club have been carried out by Alan, quietly and without fuss, such as the manufacture of AREC antennas and the wiring of the new AREC garage. Alan would quietly provide advice and equally quietly just go about getting things done.

Hamcram+, the sequel - Ian ZL3TAO

On the evening of 20th Dec 2019, we held Hamcram+ where several of the new hams got started on their next step into amateur radio with some vhf simplex contacts. Most also really enjoyed an 80m contact with Boyd ZL3LE. A few even ventured onto 705 on the way home from

the meeting.

Daytime meeting - Rick Jackson ZL3RIK As we all know Br05 host an afternoon once per month for the older hams social get together for a ham related video and an afternoon tea.

Among the regular participants is Malcolm, ZL3UP who first achieved his licence in 1956. Having grown up in the suburb of Hornby, he has not shifted too far away from there. Although he stopped transmitting 13 years ago he loves the comradeship that ham radio brings & is delighted to continue that at the monthly afternoon meetings. He informed me that back in the 50's there was a ham radio club in Hornby in Carmen Road, something I never knew. "Well it was only down the road." he said with a twinkle in his eye.

Boxing day BBQ 2018 – Mark Atherton ZL3JVX

As hoped, Branch 05 was open and ready for BBQ-business by 10am boxing day morning. Some months ago the committee agreed to allow a local building firm to use our car park during the day, and these fine-folks donated quite an enormous meaty-pile of goodies, bags of crisps, cheese, and soft drinks for this BBQ event. All we needed to do was add a small pile of onions, and some bread and we were ready. In all, around 25 people attended the event, and a good time appears to be had by all.

With many thanks to Bruce Smith who helped get the event rolling along with Rick and Paul who helped tidy up at the end; the club-room was left spotless, tidy, and even all of the bins had been emptied. Many thanks everyone, Mark. Pictures: Ron ZL3VX, Denis ZL3DEN & Kevin ZL3KWH . Kitchen slaves - Paul, ZL3PTR, Bruce, ZL3TFM, supervised by Maxine, XYL of Boyd ZL3LE.
