When Hilton had a Tabernacleby David CrumbParma-Hilton Historian
It was back in the year 1913 when Hil-ton Village Fathers and Religious Leaders felt their young people were drifting away from their religious training and moral responsibilities. Attendance in many of the churches was slipping. A solution was needed. An Evangelist was found and scheduled to come to town in February the following year. Five hundred dollars was collected, 120 male volunteers as-sembled, and with 15,000 board feet of lumber, a frame tabernacle of wood and roofing paper was constructed in several days. For six weeks, from February to April, this Tabernacle was the focal point for the people of Hilton and the surround-ing rural areas of Hamlin, Clarkson and Greece.
Much of the lumber was donated and the rest was purchased. From these 15,000 board feet, a 1,000 seat building was quickly and efficiently constructed through volunteer labor made up of prominent citizens, farmers and trades-men. They erected this temporary house of worship in several days. The location was at what today is 46 West Avenue in the village. This was two houses west of today’s Wilson Farms store. In 1914 that location was a vacant lot owned by Albert G. Smith, a wealthy Bennett Road farmer. The location was conveniently across the street from the Methodist and First Baptist churches; both sponsors of the revival. The First Baptist Church joined the Freewill Baptist Church in 1922 wherein both were then located on Lake Avenue and became known as the Lake Avenue Baptist Church.
The Evangelist was Reverend Ernest G. Crabill accompanied by his beautiful
and talented wife Annabel, along with a music director and a business manager, all who assisted in generating the many successful programs taking place during the following six weeks. Reverend Crabill, a handsome, former star baseball player from Binghamton, known as the “Pitcher Preacher” made the rounds of Western New York towns and villages, and was even called to Maine, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other Midwestern states to deliver his gospel. He was dynamic, charismatic, and highly respected.
While Reverend and Mrs. Crabill pre-sided at the Tabernacle, the village was awash with excitement and religious fervor. Nightly services were well attended and 642 persons made or renewed their vows to accept Christ. The village population at the time was 600. Those who attended never forgot their experience and many passed on the story to their children in later years.
It wasn’t just the local Hiltonites that attended. Men and women from Kendall, Brockport and Spencerport also came. Families even as far away as North Rose came by the Rome, Watertown and Ogdens-burg Railroad (better known as “Hojack”) passenger service. It was reported that dur-ing the last days of the Tabernacle, a special train was chartered from Lyndonville with 350 people to attend a program. The group returned home the same evening.
Reverend Crabill addressed many fra-ternal groups; Clio Masonic Lodge; Hilton Lodge I.O.G.T.; G.A.R.; D.A.R.; I.O.O.F.; and Mother’s Club. Many evenings the Tabernacle was filled to capacity. A choir of 40 voices accompanied by an orchestra pro-vided music and singing. “Beautiful music, stirring hymns and solos by Mr. Kemp were great features of the services.” The Hilton Record reported people running to church lest they not get a seat.
Reverend Ernest Crabill and wife Annabel. He was a former baseball star in the early 1900s. They formed a very successful ministry in Western New York. Provided photo.
Prior to coming to Hilton, Reverend and Mrs. Crabill spent time in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. There, 1,038 attendees were converted and $1,900 was collected for the evangelist. During the Hilton campaign, 642 were converted, but a collection of $2,020 was presented to Crabill. This was the largest he had ever received in his 13 year ministry. A telegram was sent to Rev-erend Crabill reporting the Tabernacle had been taken down in two hours and twenty minutes the day after his Hilton departure. “Hilton has broken nearly all the records in our work,” reported Crabill.
Mrs. Crabill herself, an accomplished presenter, appeared in many biblical roles in full regalia. She re-enacted well known Bible stories much to the interest and entertainment of the attendees. Some of her roles were Mary Magdalene, Ruth and The Queen of Sheba. Old time hymns were sung from the heart, and people went away fulfilled with the Holy Spirit.
When the day came for Reverend and Mrs. Crabill to depart, a large crowd saw them off at the Hilton Depot where they caught the Morning Train for Rochester. The Tabernacle was then disassembled, the lumber sold and used for other structures. Soon after the Tabernacle was taken down, A.G. Smith built the house that is today 46 West Avenue. It is not a proven fact, but he may have purchased some of the lumber from the disassembled building and used it for this two-story colonial style home he built for himself and his second wife, Minnie.
From all reports when the Crabills left Hilton, their evangelical visit was deemed a great success. Their work and influence left an indelible mark on the community, which lingered for years. This village as well as many others had been spiritually uplifted. Parma continued as a “dry community” for many years.
Inside the Tabernacle which was filled every night for six weeks. Its seating capacity was 1,000. Location is on the site of present day 46 West Avenue, Hilton. Provided photo.
The 100 volunteers who quickly stepped forward to build the Hilton Tabernacle in three days. Provided photo.
Reverend Crabill continued his min-istry until his death in 1936 at the age of 61. He had gone on a hunting trip in Liberty, New York and had come back to his home in Binghamton with pains in his chest. He died that evening of a heart seizure.

Brockport residentsare first and foremost Sweden residents
As the rhetoric escalates during this period leading up to the referendum to keep or eliminate the Brockport Village Government, I would like to remind Village resi-dents that the Town of Sweden is here to provide you a wide-range of services - some are mandated by the State; others are provided because your elected leaders have chosen to provide them.
Some of the many services that are provided to Sweden residents, whether you live inside or outside the village boundaries are: the senior center; community center; parks; cemetery operations (five including the cemetery within the Village borders) assessment for all levels of government; tax collection for the town, county, school and fire district; elections operations for federal, state, county and town offices; clerk services not provided by the village clerk (marriage licensing, hunting and fishing licensing, handicapped parking permits); dog control and licensing; loan closet and more.
Residents who live in the Town outside the Village pay a higher tax rate for the services that the Town does not provide within the Village borders. The difference in Town tax rates demonstrates the difference in services delivered very clearly - $2.44 per thousand in the Village; $4.70 per thousand outside the Village. Taxes collected from Village residents are not used to provide services that are only available to Town outside residents.
I encourage everyone interested in this issue to debate respectfully - your neighbors will be your neighbors re-gardless of the outcome. I encourage both sides to pres-ent accurate facts - our residents deserve correct infor-mation, not distortions. I encourage every resident of the Village to vote in the May 24 referendum so that we can have the type of local government that the majority wants to have. And I assure you that regardless of the outcome, the Town of Sweden will continue to provide excellent services to all of its residents.
Rob Carges, SupervisorTown of Sweden

OpinionWhen did themajority stop ruling?
The argument against dissolution seems to be forged by those wealthy residents who have no trouble paying astronomical taxes for a duplication of services at the ex-pense of Brockport’s middle class families - many that are trying to raise their families in a village they’ve lived in and loved.
How can it be that the Village of Brockport has a 28 percent rate of poverty and the highest tax rate in Mon-roe County? We can only hope our government will do the best for the community that elected it and even for that portion of the community that didn’t elect it. Unfor-tunately, the Village of Brockport government has con-sistently overlooked the middle-class in the interest of “taking down” who they inflammatorily call “slumlords.” It can only be the upper class that’s privileged enough to call college housing a “slum.” If they would Google the word “slum,” they would not see anything resembling Brockport.
Many young families who’ve chosen to live in Swe-den, Clarkson and Hamlin would much rather move to Brockport - if only they could afford the taxes. Lower taxes would without a doubt increase the quality of life for residents by allowing some homes to be purchased by middle-class families instead of being abandoned or turned into low-income or college rentals.
The middle class has been abandoned in Brockport. Those with the money and the power have invaded the privacy of families, photographing the homes of village landlords (who often live next to their tenants) and shar-ing them on social media to further their agenda. And worse, they’ve divided the village over their agenda. When did the majority stop ruling?

ADVANCE CARE PLANNING
www.burgerfuneralhome.com
As the American population ages and medical technol-ogy and medications enable more people to live longer with life-threatening illnesses, there is increasing interest among patients in being able to discuss end-of-life options with their doctors. With this in mind, Medicare plans to introduce “advance care planning,” which provides reimbursement to physicians who discuss treatment options with their patients. This is a significant step in that approximately three-quarters of the people who die each year are age 65 and older. This makes Medicare the largest insurer of those facing end-of-life decisions. Those availing themselves of this voluntary program would give themselves more control
over their own lives while freeing their families from having to make some very difficult decisions.
Advance care planning is not just for older adults. At any age, a medical crisis could leave someone too ill to make his or her own healthcare decisions. Because it is impossible to foresee every type of circumstance or illness, it is essential to think about what is important to you. Genesee Country Village & Museum celebrates 40th anniversary
When Genesee Country Museum staged its official opening 40 years ago, the entire country held a parade.
It was July 4, 1976 - the nation’s Bicentennial.
As New York’s largest living history museum opens for its 40th-anniversary season on May 7, there probably won’t be as many parades. But a celebration is for certain.
Every visitor that comes on opening day will get to enjoy 1-2-3-4 choco-late birthday cake. And in honor of Mother’s Day Sunday, all mothers can enter free to the museum throughout the weekend.
Meanwhile, the John L. Wehle Gal-lery will unveil its intriguing “Forty and Fabulous” exhibit, a collection of clothing and other unusual treasures obtained over the 40 years, but never before exhibited.
Mother’s Day will also see a focus on women’s fashions throughout the 19th century - highlighted by a fashion show - as well as tastings and programs on historic chocolate. Featured is a pre-sentation on the “History of Chocolate in the Americas” by David Borghesani, chocolate history research manager for Mars Chocolate. A concert by the museum’s Genesee Harmonic Society is also scheduled.
The 40th Anniversary theme will echo through the season.
On June 3, History on Tap: 40 Beers for 40 Years! will continue the 40th-annniversary celebration with an evening happy hour offering samples of 40 local craft beers, wines and ciders. A huge birthday bash follows on July 4 with great pomp and parade.

Happy Mother’s Day!
Garden Spring Cleaning ... or not ...by Kristina Gabalski
My spring garden clean-up continues as the tulips and early flowering shrubs and trees begin to bloom. I confess, one reason I like organic gardening is because it plays into my weakness to be lazy about certain gardening chores.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of a well-manicured garden, free of weeds and disease and neatly mulched, but that kind of perfection is difficult to attain, and main-tain, and in some ways, keeping a few areas of your garden - both vegetables and flower plantings - less tidy can help provide valu-able habitat for gardening friends.
I was reminded of this recently as I worked to clear an area of my vegetable garden, which contains a blackberry bush and a few winterberry holly shrubs. As I was pruning back the blackberry and removing dead weeds, I came upon one of my gardening friends, a rather large toad, sunning himself. Frightened by my proximity, he dug back under the leaves and small twigs that had likely been his home all winter. I decided to leave his habitat alone, as toads and frogs are great at eating harmful insects.
It’s important to remember gardens not only provide us with beauty and nourish-ment, they are habitat for others - the wild creatures that bring our landscape to life - toads, bees, birds and butterflies - all of which are helpful to gardeners.
I know birds can be destructive to my fruit crops, but they bring song to the garden and they help to control insect pests. Providing them with places to roost, nest and perch
keeps them close by. That means keeping trees, shrubs and perennials throughout your landscape. Bird houses can provide places for cavity nesters to lay eggs and care for their young.
Beneficial wildlife also needs water, food and cover. Rocks and pebbles placed in a birdbath give insects a place to land without drowning. Toads and frogs enjoy tiny basins or containers of water sunk into the ground. Ground-level insects also enjoy a clay saucer with a small amount of water and pebbles or rocks.
To help prevent mosquitoes from breeding, refresh the water frequently or stir the water as you work in or walk through the garden.
Remember that beneficial insects need some pest insects on which to feed. Try to be tolerant of a certain level of aphids, slugs, caterpillars, etc. around your garden. Staying pesticide-free is also important for
It’s a bit embarrassing to admit - but this is a corner of my largest vegetable garden. It con-tains currant bushes and unruly herbs like mint, oregano and garlic chives ... and plenty of weeds ... I finally gave up trying to keep it in check last year and now it is my “pollinator/beneficial insect habitat.” The Queen Anne’s Lace and Goldenrod attract and provide habitat for beneficials. Note the milkweed at the front; it provides a spot for Monarch butterflies to lay their eggs and food for Monarch caterpillars. Garden areas left in this un-ruly “natural state” can help keep your landscape bustling with life. K. Gabalski photo.
beneficial insects and wildlife. Flowers and herbs attract beneficials and growing them amongst your vegetable plantings attracts both pollinators and predatory insects.
Don’t forget about shelter. Beneficials need spots to hide both themselves and their eggs. Permanent plantings such as shrubs and perennials can provide for this in the growing season, as can mulch. In fall and winter, leave some perennial foliage to help harbor eggs. Erie County Master Gardener Sally Cunningham recommends building a mulch boundary - a slight mound of dead leaves, straw and twigs around the edge of your garden in the off-season for overwinter-ing beneficials.
Overall, keeping your garden neat and tidy can help fight disease and improve ap-pearance, but a little bit of “messiness” here and there goes a long way to keeping your garden vibrant, healthy and alive.

Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents Erie Canal Celebration ConcertThe Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present their
“Erie Canal Celebration Concert” on Sunday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in the historic sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street in the Village of Brockport. Admission and parking are free, and donations to the orchestra and St. Luke’s and canned items for the Brock-port Ecumenical Food Shelf will be gratefully accepted at the door.
Under the baton of music director Jonathan Allentoff, this concert features narrator Bill Andrews, William Hullfish & the Golden Eagle String Band, vocalist Mary Wojciechowski, and guest speaker Grace Carson.
The centerpiece of the program is the world premiere of “Songs of the Erie Canal for Narrator, String Band & Orchestra” by Allentoff and Hullfish with text by legendary Brockport author Mary Jane Holmes. Andrews, Vice-Mayor
of Brockport, will recite excerpts from Holmes’ novels and the Smithsonian Gold Medal Artists of the Golden Eagle String Band will perform four canal songs alongside the orchestra. This new work will also feature a special introduction by Grace Carson, Brockport educator and author of “The Works of Mary Jane Holmes, A Brockport Union Catalog.”
Wojciechowski will sing “Today I Love Everybody” and “With the Sun Warm Upon Me” by Harold Arlen and Dorothy Fields from the 1953 Erie Canal themed movie musical entitled, “The Farmer Takes a Wife.” A graduate of Nazareth College and Temple University, she recently appeared as soloist at the Corning Museum of Glass and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival.
The orchestra will also perform “Adagio cantabile from Symphony No. 92” (Oxford Celebration) by Joseph Haydn and “Dewitt Clinton’s Grand Canal March” by Richard Willis. Premiered by the West Point Band at the entrance of the first canal boat into the Hudson River in 1823, Hullfish has restored and arranged this work based on Willis’ original score housed in the Special Collections at Johns Hopkins University.
Following the concert, a dessert reception will take place in Parish Hall celebrating Dr. Heidi Macpherson’s Presidential Inauguration Weekend. For more informa-tion, visit www.brockportsymphony.org.

Westside Coalition of Christian Churches presents sixteenth annual benefit concert
Save the date and plan to attend the Sixteenth Annual Ecumenical Benefit Concert sponsored by the Westside Coalition of Christian Churches on Sunday, May 22 at 4 p.m. at Pearce Memorial Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili.
This group of churches initially gath-ered in 2001 to support the building of a Habitat for Humanity House. Since then, the music ministries have pre-sented an annual benefit concert each year, raising over $30,000 for different charitable organizations, including Bethany House, Aurora Hospice Home, House of Mercy, Mary’s Place, RAIHN, Hope Hall and many others.
The concert this year features singers and instrumentalists from Community Christian Church, Pearce Memorial
Church, Parkminster Presbyterian Church, St. Theodore Church and Trinity Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Choirs from each of the churches and the combined vocal, men’s and wom-en’s choirs will present sacred choral selections. Special featured guests Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers will also perform under the direction of Darla Bair.
The concert is free and open to the public. Free will donations will be ac-cepted with all proceeds going to Dimi-tri House, a non-profit organization serving those in need in the Rochester community. Pearce Church is handi-capped accessible.

Listen to the facts about dissolution
We have many people in Brockport, Clarkson and Swe-den who have contributed both time and money to make Brockport a better community. We also have a few people who view Brockport as a piggy bank and do not care how
Comments/OpinionTime to reassess town rental properties
Talking about assessments and percentage of tax-ex-empt property in the village reminds me of another ques-tion: What percentage of taxable properties are rental properties and what percentage are single-family hom-eowners? Mr. King asserts that “we” are all paying too much when in fact, the single-family homeowner is pay-ing too much and the rental properties are not paying enough.
This multi-million dollar business ($9.3 million) is com-prised of over 365 converted single-family homes largely located in “Old Town” Brockport. This industry, unregu-lated for over 40 years, and landlords like Mr. King are counting on dissolution to reduce the cost of doing busi-ness. Furthermore, the single-family homeowner has been subsidizing the rental properties because the Town of Sweden Assessor refuses to follow New York State guidelines and assess the income producing properties as commercial entities. According to the state, the assessor is the one who makes the decision about whether a prop-erty is classified commercial or residential.
Is it fair or equitable that residential properties used for commercial enterprise be classified as single family? The facts speak for themselves in that our findings indi-cate that the single family homes of comparable square feet, lot size and assessment are assessed at over $25,000 more than the same rental property. There needs to be fair and equitable assessment on all properties and it is time for the Town of Sweden elected officials to recognize that this practice has gone on long enough.
The dissolution movement is the vehicle that some land-lords are counting on so that they can continue to do busi-ness as usual. The Village of Brockport Code Enforcement Office along with the Brockport Police Department and the Village Court has finally been able to make small inroads in enforcing our village codes to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the residents. This is something that group of landlords does not want. They want unfettered non-compliance in every sense of the word. They would have you believe that this dissolution is for your benefit when in fact, it is for this special interest group.
Don’t be fooled by the promises of reduced taxes. Don’t be fooled by charts and graphs that try to convince you that dissolution is the answer. You will lose services and the services that you may retain will not be the same. Dissolution is not the answer to tax reform. Tax reform in the Village of Brockport will come when everyone pays their fair share. And this means re-classifying the rental properties and assessing them on the income approach as recommended by New York State.
Josephine C. MatelaBrockport
Brockport looks. Wouldn’t it be nice if they had to pay the $1,600 cost of the upcoming dissolution vote?
The Village of Brockport is the largest village in Mon-roe County and has a population of 8,397 (see Brockport Web Site), which doubles when the college is in session.
The last time the dissolution vote came up, a NYS rep-resentative came for a presentation. He suggested that the Villages are subsidizing the towns. I suggest that you go to the Town of Sweden website and view their adopted budget.
For all of the “A” portions, the Village of Brockport tax-payers pay 36.6 percent of these costs. Our $2.34 rate per thousand pays more to the Town of Sweden for the Town Supervisor than we pay the Mayor of Brockport.
We are paying for Sweden street lighting, equipment, highway superintendent, retirement and Social Security. The list goes on and I do not see how these taxes benefit the Village of Brockport.
Wouldn’t it be nice to save $2.34 per thousand of as-sessed value of your property? This would happen if we were co-terminus town-village. East Rochester has achieved this status.
There is an informational meeting on dissolution on Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the Oliver Middle School Auditorium. Please come and hear the facts. Vote “NO” for dissolution. Ask for more information about the Vil-lage of Brockport becoming a co-terminus town-village. The Village would be separate from the Town with no responsibilities to the Town of Sweden.

Blue Devils win sixthby Warren Kozireski
Brockport swept all three doubles matches on their way to a 6-1 boys’ tennis victory over Gates Chili.
Karl McNulty and Matt VanDuzee needed three sets to win at first doubles 6-2, 2-6, 10-6. The second doubles team of Sebastian King and Aaron Ennis won 6-1, 6-2, while the third doubles unit of Matt Benedict and Jon Autenrieth swept a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Top singles player John Stoia had little difficulty in his 6-0, 6-1 win and third singles Alex Reber also swept 6-2, 6-1. Second singles Joe McNulty was forced to go to a third set in his 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win.
Earlier in the week, the three doubles’ teams with Joshua VanDeMark joining Autenrieth on the third unit, also swept Eastridge to lead a 5-2 win.
Brockport routs Lancersby Warren Kozireski
Tori Lammes and Erika Ruggieri each scored five goals while Jasmyn Jessmer had an eight-point game to lead the Blue Devils to a 21-9 win over visiting Eastridge in girls’ lacrosse in 30 degree weather. The victory was the Blue Devils’ tenth consecutive over Eastridge.
Brockport opened up a 3-0 lead over the first 89 seconds as Emma Moulton won the draw at midfield and started the attack.
Moulton scored the first with an assist from Jessmer 29 seconds into the contest. Lammes came out from behind the net to score the second 1:08 in and Ruggieri netted her first off a low shot 21 seconds later.
After the Lancers closed to within 4-2, the Blue Devils closed out the first half scoring nine of the ten goals to take a 13-3 lead. Jessmer scored three of those while as-sisting on two others, Lammes found the back of the net three times in the rally while senior Tori Penders took an inside pass from Ruggieri and found the upper left corner of the net.
Eastridge scored the first three goals of the second half, but managed just three more the rest of the way.
Penders completed her hat trick, Ruggieri scored three times, leading scorer Leah Daly came off the bench to net two goals with two assists and Christina Middleton scored her only goal of the game as the Blue Devils scored four consecutive goals over the final eight minutes to improve their record to 5-2.
Sophomore goaltender Gabby LoGuidice made seven saves in the net to pick up the win.
Jessmer, reportedly heading to Roberts Wesleyan this fall, now has 88 career points with nine games remaining in the regular season to reach the coveted century mark.
