There is Hope for Hair Loss

Hair loss is a traumatic event that affects millions of people each year. Whether it be from hormonal changes, genetics or illnesses, the result also includes a loss of confidence and self-esteem that can

be crippling. But there is hope. Changes Hairstyling and City Spa offers a number of different techniques to rebuild your self-assurance and get your life back, quickly and painlessly.

Al Kelly, a stylist at Changes Hairstyling who specializes in wigs and hair extensions, has worked with a number of clients over the years who have been able to return to a healthy, active lifestyle without anyone being the wiser about their condition. “The treatment depends on the person, their need and what they want to achieve. I usually have people come in and we’ll talk, then we’ll figure out what they need and go from there. Sometimes I’ll mix two or three techniques to create their final look.” There is no fee for the consultation.

For one client who was going through chemotherapy and lost her hair, Kelly created a custom-made hairpiece that was actually bonded to her scalp so that she could swim, go skydiving, drive her convertible with the top down and not have to worry about it. As her hair grew back, he

eventually removed the hairpiece and included extensions to keep her look natural. “Some people just want a wig they can wear during the day and that they can remove at night,” says Kelly. “Others want to remain active and want something they can wear in a windstorm and no one would know

the difference. I work with them over time to make sure they have whatever look and feel they want.”

Kelly will even take time off to meet clients at a wig shop to make sure they get a piece that looks natural and will complement each person’s overall look. “I do that with all my clients who need help

with that,” he says. “We meet at the wig shop and try to make it as fun as possible. We’ll look for what they need, cut it for the look they want, and they’re good to go. When it comes to my cancer patients, that’s a devastating process, so I’m glad I can help them through at least that part of it.”

Atoosa Cobb, Chief Operating Officer for Changes Hairstyling and City Spa is proud of the services that their stylists can offer to people going through a transition due to hair loss. “Whether it’s because of a medical treatment or it’s genetic, it’s a temporary condition or something more permanent, it’s important that people know they have options and we have solutions. It’s amazing to see the transformation—not just in how our clients look, but how they feel.”

AFTER

After being diagnosed with Cranial Callulous Fistula, Laurie Gallegos’ radiation procedure left a bald patch in her head. Thanks to the experts at Changes, her hair has been restored.

If your signature lip shade is Fuchsia Frenzy, you’re still rocking the bleach blond permed, feathered and teased coiffure and you break out the acid

wash jeans every now and then because you just know they’re on the verge of coming back, it’s obvious that a makeover is in order.

However, it’s not always that apparent that your overall style could use a refresher.

It’s easy to get stuck in a hair or makeup rut once you become comfortable with your look. Sometimes a simple hair revamp, a couple new makeup techniques and a flattering outfit is all you need to go from dated to dazzling.

Holly Watters, corporate art director at Vista Graphics, agreed to participate in a complimentary makeover because she thought it would be fun to have a whole new look. Her main desire was to learn how to apply makeup and to change her hairstyle. “I want to have a style,” she said. “As you can see I have no style.”

We headed to Diva Hair and Nail Studio in Virginia Beach to let owner MarieAnn Messina work her makeover magic. The first step was a new hair color. Since Holly had only begun coloring her hair in her late 40s to cover the gray, she hadn’t experimented much with different shades.

MarieAnn paints the eucalyptus-

based color from root to end.

Holly’s hair is sectioned off as MarieAnn paints

the highlights and encloses them

in foil.

A technique called point

cutting is used to texturize the hair.

MarieAnn uses a ceramic flat iron,

paying close attention to the way Holly’s hair

naturally bends.

Age Rewind concealer is applied

underneath the eyes.

Paul Mitchell’s The Color in neutral blonde is mixed

with a developer.

MarieAnn started with a root to end color and then added highlights for a honey-kissed glow. For the all over color, she used Paul Mitchell’s The Color in neutral blonde, a eucalyptus-based formula that’s less damaging. MarieAnn chose this color and process based on Holly’s skin tone and to allow for the most wearability, explaining that if she went too dark, roots would show within a couple weeks, but foiling allows for fewer touchups. She applied a lighter color toward the front of Holly’s hair to add more body.

After the foil was removed, it was time for the cut. MarieAnn used a technique called point cutting, which texturizes the hair and removes bulk from the ends. “The length won’t change, but the texture will,” MarieAnn said. This cut works best for Holly based on her face shape and hair texture. “If you don’t have the hair or have too much hair for a particular cut, don’t do it,” MarieAnne advised.

Holly’s new haircut, the fringed bob, will allow her to experiment with many different styles, from curled all over for a softer appearance to flipped

out for a more choppy look. For today, MarieAnn used a ceramic flat iron, paying close attention to the way that Holly’s hair was naturally bending. Afterward, Holly was ready to see the finished product. “I don’t recognize myself,” Holly said in amazement. “Look at all my hair!”

After Holly’s hair had reached the absolute glamour phase, Ann Wizczak, a stylist at Diva, gave her a french manicure. Diva offers exclusive nail services such as chocolate manicures and pedicures as well as the newest craze, Shellac Nails.

Next MarieAnn did Holly’s makeup, starting with Age Rewind concealer around the eyes. Then she applied tinted moisturizer to hydrate and give an even balance followed by mineral powder. After that was the blood red lip liner.

“Remember the old tricks; when you put your lip color on, you’re to fill the whole lip with the pencil, not just outline it like a cartoon,” MarieAnn said. For a captivating shine, she applied Viva Vegas Trucco Divinyls lip gloss. Sandalwood blush added some playful color to Holly’s cheeks, and smoked violeto and camouflage eye color made her eyes stand out more.

Ann also applied single eyelashes to Holly’s lids one at a time, using approximately five lashes for each eyelid and giving them a starlet effect. “Oh my gosh; look at my eyelashes,” Holly exclaimed after looking in the mirror. “They’re so long!” After the lashes were applied, Holly realized what a bombshell she was becoming and reached for her cell phone. “I need to text my husband to tell him we have to go out,” she said.

Once Holly left Diva Salon, she felt like a whole new person. “I feel five years younger and five pounds lighter,” she said. She revealed that her favorite aspect was the change of hair color and style, mainly getting rid of the gray. Since she wasn’t used to wearing a lot of makeup, it was a bit difficult for her to get used to it. “I feel a little more made up than I would normally do, but I feel like it looks natural,” she said.

What would a brand new look be without fabulous outfits to bring it all together? Jody Greason, owner of Jody G. at Pizazz at Hilltop in Virginia Beach had just the fashion fix. The Maria Slim Bell from Genetic Denim jeans provided the ultimate slimming and flattering look to suit Holly’s figure. Jody speculates that bootcuts with exaggerated flares will be popular this fall, and she recommends choosing dark washes when looking for a versatile pair of jeans that can be dressed up or down. Not only do these jeans give a sleek appeal, Genetic Denim gives an appealing donation to the World Childhood Foundation for every pair purchased.

Also from Jody G., the Kaleidoscope silk chiffon blouse in vintage rose from Gemma is the perfect fall necessity, combining a rich spectrum of warm colors. The top is complemented by a distressed leather belt from Topaz Designs, providing a slightly edgy feel to the ensemble. Of course no outfit is complete without a sensational jewelry

combination. Jody has been noticing a trend of teal, raspberry and dark purple jewelry for the months ahead. The stone ring and earrings by Starata added a stunning finish.

For those cooler autumn days, Jody suggested an unbelievably smooth and sleek cashmere jacket from Robbi & Nikki with a So Fine lace cami underneath from Only Hearts. “I picked this jacket because it has a suede look, but the price is more reasonable,” Jody said. “You get the look without the weight and the heat.” The belted tie on the jacket helps to emphasize Holly’s small waist. For this outfit, a mixed stone necklace from Starata provided a burst of color.

Holly felt that her experience at Jody G. helped her to break out of her normal clothing routine. “I would not have tried the belt with the blouse, but I love them together now that I have them,” she said. She plans to mix and match the outfits and pair different accessories to get the most wear out of them.

Two weeks after the makeover, Holly seemed just as thrilled with her new look as she did on the initial day. Her hair has lightened even more from exposure to the sun, and she now gets compliments on her style all the time. “After years of being a working mom, you forget what it’s like to spend a lot of time on your hair, clothes and makeup,” she said. “This was a fabulous change.” nB

BB: How much damage do flat irons and curling irons do to your hair?Pamela: Flat irons inflict more damage than curling irons do, because even though people hold curling irons in their hair longer, people who flat iron their hair do it a lot. BB: What are the easiest ways to prevent hair loss?Pamela: Dietary prob-lems, genetics, the use of certain medications and stress all contribute to hair

loss. Maintaining a good diet is essential to healthy hair, and the vitamin biotin promotes hair growth.BB: What is the most com-mon hair don’t that you see, and what advice can you offer to prevent it?Pamela: The biggest prob-lem we encounter is people coloring their hair them-selves. There are undertones in the hair that untrained people can’t see. My advice is to leave all chemical things to the professionals.

BB: Bright red lipstick is all the rage in Hollywood. Can all women pull off this trend?Sarah: Absolutely! All women can wear red lip-stick because there are several different shades. Red lipstick is probably the most versatile lipstick a woman can own. BB: What is the best way to hide bags under the eyes?

Sarah: Two products. Eye cream and concealer.BB: Is there a universal makeup product every woman should use?Sarah: Blush! Every woman should own a blush that can be transformed into a lip, cheek possibly or even an eye color. Blush instantly brightens the face and adds color to liven up any look.BB: If you could offer only one makeup tip to women, what would it be?Sarah: Invest in good brushes. The tools of the makeup process are just as important as the technique and application. Without the appropriate brushes, it is impossible to create certain affects necessary to achieve your desired look. Can you imagine how a painter would create his masterpiece without his paintbrushes?

BB: Are there specific foods or nutrients that directly benefit the skin?Amanda: A healthy diet with fruits, vegetables and lots of water has the biggest impact on the skin.BB: Should people wear sunscreen year round, even during the winter?Amanda: Absolutely. When a person will be outside for a long period of time, no matter which season it is, full spectrum sun block should be used. BB: What can people do to bright-en dull-looking skin and make it glow?Amanda: Exfoliation is the key to healthy skin because it removes dead skin cells. An appropriate moistur-izer or serum will help a lot as well.

BB: Is there one style/beauty product you can’t live without?Benita: I can’t do without my false eyelashes! I wear them all the time. Also, lip gloss and lipstick make your face look fan-tastic. I’ve always loved makeup, ever since I was a kid. I even put a full face of makeup on when I go play racquetball!BB: The clothes you wear on the air—from your own wardrobe or courtesy of a stylist?Benita: I style myself so they’re from my own wardrobe. I really study myself and my body type to figure out what looks best in terms of what I do. My company, B. Adams Style, emphasizes the importance of people studying themselves. Style is all about fit, function and fun.BB: Do you have any style tips for professional men and women?Benita: My advice is always dress a step above everybody else. If it’s

casual Friday, dress profes-sionally casual and a little more stylish than the rest. Always look neat, profes-sional and polished. nB

You’ve accepted the cocktail party invitation. Now… what to wear? If you see the words “cocktail party” or “cocktail attire” on an invitation, know that a specific dress code

comes along with it. The appropriate outfit for such an occasion is dressy and elegant, usually a dress that is mid-thigh to below-the-knee in length. Depending on the season, fabrics can be a wool blend, knit, satin, chiffon, silk or rayon in various colors and prints, all of which can be dressed up or down with jewelry, shoes or even your hairstyle. Pair the dress with some fabulous heels and a chic clutch or small purse and keep your jewelry low key. Don’t over do it. If wearing a dress is not for you, a pair of dressy pants and an elegant top is completely acceptable.

Chances are you already have something in your closet you can wear. But, if you are like most women, a party invitation gives you a chance to buy something new and fun. Remember to keep your look classy, not over-the-top.

For The Men: Cocktail attire means a suit and tie or coat and tie. But, there is a trend of men foregoing the tie and opting instead for the button-down shirt (top button undone). Either is acceptable. Fabrics will vary depending on the season. But men, khakis are not appropriate!

Don’t Get Burned by Skin Cancer

Virginia Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center241 Corporate Blvd., Suite 215, Norfolk, VA 23502

Summer is obviously a great time to spend out-doors whether you’re

working on your home or gar-den, driving around town with your windows open, spending some time out on the water or just relaxing with a good book. But because of the depletion of our ozone layer and the inconsistent use of proper sun block, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause damage that may potentially lead to skin cancer—espe-cially to areas that are continuously open to the elements including your face, ears, neck, arms and legs. In fact, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and one in five Americans are at risk of devel-oping some type of skin cancer.

Fortunately, thanks to a proce-dure called Mohs Micrographic Surgery, the skilled doctors at the Virginia Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center can identify and treat skin cancer with a proce-dure that has the highest cure rate (98-99%) and leaves the

smallest incidence of scarring. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is performed as an outpatient pro-cedure that utilizes a local anes-thetic applied to the target area to minimize discomfort.

The procedure’s cure rate is attributed to how a cancerous tumor is removed layer by layer,

with little or no dam-age to the surround-ing tissue. Depending on the size of the tumor, the wound site may be allowed to heal naturally without further treat-ment or may require a few small stitches. Larger wounds may need a skin graft

or further procedures to help reduce any visible scarring.

If you’ve experienced any sun damage (like a sunburn), and you’re concerned about suspi-cious spots or moles, make an appointment with the Virginia Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center for a consultation. They also provide a full range of cos-metic treatments to do every-thing from reducing the signs of aging to simply improving your overall skin appearance.

xIf you use the words “men’s spa” in a sentence when talking to three of your best buddies, you’re not not going to get laughed at.

That’s what happened to me when I announced that I was going to Jake’s Place, a spa and salon geared to men in Norfolk’s Ghent district. As an NCAA

athlete playing lacrosse for Virginia Wesleyan College, I am highly aware that a European facial treatment is never toward the top of the to-do list for the typical alpha male in the locker room.

I know, guys—but for now, just bite your sharp-witted tongue and read.Jake Cobb, the owner, explained to me what makes Jake’s Place different from

other guy-centric salons. “Our business is deeply rooted in our ownership,” he said. “You can go to a Knockouts or any other branch, but it wouldn’t

be the same. In today’s world, I don’t think people take enough time for themselves, and that is what Jake’s Place is all about.”

For the guys who think they’re too manly to engage in a five-star spa experience, Jake said, “They simply don’t know what they are missing. When we get somebody through the door once, they are clients for life.”

I walked through the front doors of Jake’s Place prepared to experience The Male Habitat spa package along with a fresh shave. First I headed to the locker room, where I took a cleansing 10-minute steam, showered and put on one of the spa’s silky-soft robes.

From there, massage therapist Ashley Warren showed me to the softly lit massage room that would eventually put me in

a complete trance.

The 60-minute massage was the most calming experience that I can remember. The combina-tion of faded lighting, subtle music and Ashley’s gifted hands nearly put me to sleep. She targeted every tense muscle that I had informed her of and coated my upper back with Bio-Freeze, a product that chills your epidermis and cools down your aggravated muscles before heating up with a light tingle of warmth. Then she placed hot towels along my back, warming deep down into my muscle tissue.

After that came the “sissy” stuff.I, of course, had no idea that Handshake Maintenance and a Ten-

Toe Touchdown was code for mani-pedi. From Paraffin wax includ-ing key minerals and oils to nail files and moisturizing lotions, both services were phenomenally relaxing and cleansing.

The last of my four services was the hot lather shave. Any guy who is in need of a clean shave should invest in this treatment and drop the Gillette Fusion ProGlide.

My entire face was covered with three layers of hot towels as I laid back in a cushiony leather recliner. When they were removed, Dana Fulcher lathered my face with shaving gel and, using a straight razor, she shaved with and against the grain of my face and neck. After-ward, she lightly wiped my face of the hot lather with an ice-cold towel and again placed a layer of three hot towels across my face. Finally she covered my face in American Crew lubricating oil for the last step of the revitalizing process. I exited the doors of Jake’s Place feeling completely revitalized, both mentally and physically. If I were to toot my own horn, I’d say that I was freshly prepped for a night about town.

Cease your “masculine man” ways for a few hours, and pay a visit to Jake’s Place—because when you walk through the door once, you may become a client for life, despite what your friends think. nB
