The Personal Protective Equipment Directives (89/686/CEE) and (93/68/CEE) have been enacted by the European Community to ensure harmonisation of regulations regarding testing of all PPE sold within the community.

All gloves of intermediate and complex design must now be tested independently to ascertain their performance and ensure their safety. They must, if they meet these standards, carry a CE Mark on the gloves, or on their packaging when this is not practical.

CATEGORISATIONUnder the terms of the above directive, gloves fall into the following three categories:

CAT I - Simple DesignFor minimal risks only. Suitable only for low risk applications where hazards can be identifi ed by the wearer in time to deal with them.

CAT II - Intermediate DesignReversible risks. Products are type examined by an approved body where they examine the manufacturers technical specifi cations and conduct tests for the relevant standards to ascertain their conformity and/or performance.

CAT III - Complex DesignFor protection against mortal danger or risks of irreversible harm. Products are type examined by an approved body as for category II. In addition, the products and manufacturer are subject to EC quality control according to an approved quality system.

A detailed guide to EN standards is on Page 52

Skytec offers a wide range of liners and coatings. Compare the strengths of each and choose the compositions that best meet your needs!

NylonA lightweight elastic polyamide which is largely lint-free and washable, dries quickly and is resistant to abrasion and deformation. When mixed with cotton and acrylic, it makes the glove more fl exible and extends its lifetime.

LatexNatural rubber that is supple, elastic, robust, highly resistant to mechanical impacts and hazards. Waterproof and detergent-safe.

Polyurethane (PU)Elastomer that is resistant to wear, abrasion, tearing and harsh oils and chemicals. Does not go hard in the cold or soft in the heat. It is microporous and provides the hand with ventilation. It is very elastic and adapts to all of the hand’s movements.

HPPEHigh performance polyethylene is fl exible, light and durable. As resistant to cutting as a para-aramid but with more resistance to abrasion, the fi bre remains resistant to chemicals, in particular solvents.

NitrileA hard-wearing synthetic polymer. Flexible and can withstand abrasion and puncturing, with maximum resistance to oil with enhanced grip.

CottonNatural Cellulose fi bre. Supple, soft, non-irritating, it provides protection from mechanical hazards, absorbs perspiration and makes continuous wearing of dipped protective gloves very comfortable.

HPTHydropellent Technology coating. The HPT process creates a spongy, soft and durable coating that repels liquids to provide a fi rm wet or dry grip. Encapsulated air molecules provide an inherent vibration absorption feature.

Para-aramidA para-aramid is lightweight, supple, comfortable, and washable. It provides effective protection from cuts, typically levels 4 and 5, and offers durability and performance that far exceeds leather.

APGNew patent pending Neoprene Bi-Polymer coating. Flexible, light and durable it provides great comfort and wearer satisfaction. Rough, chipped fi nish provides excellent grip in dry and wet applications. Solvent free process, silicone free formulation, and protein free. Excellent oil repellency.

NFTNitrile Foam Technology, a unique nitrile foam coating that is made by a Patented manufacturing process, offering breathability and dexterity along with excellent oil and wet grip properties.

Nitrile SpongeA patent pending micro-foam coating with excellent durability, and aiding breathability for long-term comfort. Unique micropore technology limits ingress of oils and greases.

The Single European Act includes a specifi c pledge to improve healthand safety at work for all European workers.

The commitment to ‘level up’ to the best practice currently employedwithin the Union has been enshrined in a legally binding FrameworkDirective (89/391/EEC), which not only lays down broad guidelines forhealth and safety but also places upon the employer an absolute duty“to ensure the safety and health of employees in their workplace”. Thisdirective is amplifi ed by fi ve daughter directives, of which one directlygoverns the use of protective gloves.

The Use of Personal Protective Equipment Directive 89/656/EECFour articles of the Directive merit particular attention, as they placesubstantial responsibilities on employers:

ARTICLE 3 states that before selecting any PPE, a basic assessmentmust be made to identify and evaluate the risk. Where possible, the riskmust be reduced or eliminated by a modifi cation of workplace practice. This option is always to be preferred to the use of PPE.

Under ARTICLE 4, the employer must inform his workers of the risksin the workplace, supply appropriate and correctly fi tting PPE whichcomplies with EU standards, and give adequate instruction in its use.He should further ensure that the PPE is used only for the purposeintended by the manufacturer, and in accordance with themanufacturer’s instructions.

ARTICLE 5 requires the employer to:1. Audit workplace hazards and assess the level of risk to employees.2. Defi ne the properties necessary in the gloves to protect the employees.3. Ensure that all gloves used in the workplace conform to the PPE Directive and relevant EN standards.4. Compare the merits of the various types of protection available.5. Keep full records of assessments and reasons for selecting a particular type of glove. If the risk should alter in any way, for instance by the introduction of a new chemical or industrial process, the assessment must be repeated.

Finally, ARTICLE 6 requires Member States to introduce written rulesfor workplace situations in which the use of PPE shall be consideredcompulsory. Naturally, employers will have to be aware of and complywith these rules.

To comply with the new regulations, you must select gloves which notonly adhere to the above Directive and relevant safety standards, butalso are demonstrably of good quality and fi ttest for the intended task.

COMPLYING WITH THE PPE DIRECTIVE: 89/686/EECThe Directive specifi es two classes of glove meeting two levels of risk:‘Minimal’ and ‘mortal’ or ‘irreversible’ risk. A risk which falls betweenthese two levels may be described as ‘intermediate’. To comply withthe 89/656/EEC Directive, you must establish the level of risk and selectgloves of the appropriate class.

A GREATER COMMITMENT TO HEALTH AND SAFETY EN STANDARDS FOR HAND PROTECTION

A system of marking has been developed to help you in that selection.

Gloves of simple design - for minimal risk onlyFor gloves of simple design offering protection from low level risks, e.g.janitorial gloves, manufacturers are permitted to test and certify glovesthemselves.

Gloves of this category are CE-marked as follows:

Gloves of intermediate design - for intermediate riskGloves designed to protect against intermediate risk, e.g. generalhandling gloves requiring good cut, puncture and abrasion performance, must be subjected to independent testing and certifi cation by a Notifi edBody. Only these approved Bodies may issue a CE mark, without whichthe gloves may not be sold. Each Notifi ed Body has its own identifi cationnumber. The name and address of the Notifi ed Body that certifi es theproduct has to appear on the instructions for use that will accompanythe gloves.

Gloves of intermediate design are CE-marked as follows:

Gloves of complex design - for irreversible or mortal riskGloves designed to protect against the highest levels of risk e.g.chemicals, must also be tested and certifi ed by a Notifi ed Body. Inaddition, the quality assurance system used by the manufacturer toguarantee homogeneity of production must be independently checked. The Body carrying out this evaluation will be identifi ed by a numberwhich must appear alongside the CE mark (in this case, 0120).

Gloves of complex design are CE-marked as follows:

Please note that the original PPE Directive 89/686/EEC has beenamended by both the 93/95/EEC Directive and the CE MarkingDirectives 93/68/EEC and 95/58 EEC.

RAISING STANDARDS IN EUROPEThe primary aim of the Personal Protective Equipment Directive is toimprove safety at work. This is achieved by establishing standards formanufacture and use that will apply throughout the Union; and thisis the remit of the Committee for European Normalisation (CEN). Thecommittee is made up of representatives of the national standardsorganisations in each of the Member States plus EFTA, along with majorEuropean PPE manufacturers.

If you would like any further clarifi cation of these Directives, or furtherinformation on testing and certifi cation procedures, please contact ourTechnical Service.

SCOPEThis standard defi nes the general requirements for glove designand construction, innocuousness, comfort, effi ciency, marking andinformation applicable to all protective gloves. This standard can also apply to arm guards. The key points are given below. Some gloves designed for very specialist applications, such as electrician’s or surgical gloves are governed by other stringent job-specifi c standards (Details are available on request).

DEFINITIONA glove is an item of personal protective equipment which protects the hand or any part of the hand from hazards. It may also cover part of the forearm and arm. A performance level is a number (between 0 and 4) which shows how a glove has performed in a specifi c test, and by which the results of that testing may be graded. Level 0 indicates that the glove is either untested or falls below the minimum performance level. A performance level X means that the testing method is not suitable for the glove sample. Higher numbers indicate higher levels of performance.

GLOVE CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN• Gloves have to offer the greatest degree of protection in the foreseeable conditions of end use.• When seams are included, the strength of these seams should not reduce the overall performance of the glove.

INNOCUOUSNESS• The gloves themselves shouldn’t cause any harm to the user• PH of the glove should be between 3.5 and 9.5• Chromium (VI) content should be below detection (<10 ppm)• Natural rubber gloves shall be tested on extractable proteins as per EN 455-3.

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS• If care instructions are provided, the levels of performance should not be reduced after the maximum recommended number of cleaning cycles.

ELECTROSTATIC PROPERTIES• Antistatic gloves that are designed to reduce the risk of electrostatic discharges shall be tested as per EN 1149• Obtained test values are to be reported on the Instructions for Use• An electrostatic pictogram shall NOT be used

SIZING (SEE TABLE BELOW)• Gloves that are below the minimum length are to be called ‘Fit for Special Purpose’.

STANDARD EN 420: 2003GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PROTECTIVE GLOVES

DEXTERITY• If required, performance to be graded as per table at the foot of the page.

WATER VAPOUR TRANSMISSION AND ABSORPTION• If required, gloves shall allow water vapour transmission (5mg cm2.h)• If gloves exclude water vapour transmission, it should be at least 8mg/cm2 for 8 hours.

MARKING & INFORMATION:Marking of the glove• Each glove should be marked with: - Name of manufacturer - Glove and size designation - CE mark - Appropriate pictograms accompanied by the relevant performance levels and the reference of the EN standard.

• The marking should be legible throughout the life of the glove. Where marking of the glove is not possible in view of the characteristics of the glove, it should be mentioned on the fi rst packaging enclosure.

Marking of the packaging immediately containing the gloves• Name and address of the manufacturer or representative• Glove and size designation• CE mark• Usage info - Simple design: “for minimal risks only” - Intermediate design or complex design: relevant pictograms - When protection is limited to part of the hand, this shall be mentioned (e.g. “Palm Protection style only”)• Reference to where information can be obtained

Instructions for Use (To be supplied when the glove is placed on the market)• Name and address of the manufacturer or representative• Glove designation• Size range available• CE mark• Care and storage instruction• Instructions and limitations of use• A list of substances used in the glove which are known to cause allergies• A list of all substances in the glove shall be made available upon request• Name and address of Notifi ed Body that certifi ed the product

SCOPEThis standard applies to gloves to protect from Ionising Radiation andRadioactive Contamination.

DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTSThe nature of protection is shown by a pictogram relating to the specifi c protective qualities.• To protect from radioactive contamination, the glove has to be liquidproof and needs to pass the penetration test defi ned in EN 374.

STANDARD EN 421: 1994GLOVES GIVING PROTECTION FROM RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION AND IONISING RADIATION

• For gloves used in containment enclosures, the glove shall offer high resistance to permeability of water vapour.• To protect from ionising radiation, the glove has to contain a certain amount of lead, quoted as “lead equivalence”. This Lead Equivalence must be marked on each glove.• Materials exposed to ionising radiation may be modelled by their behaviour to ozone cracking. This test is optional and can be used as an aid to selecting gloves which require resistance to ionising radiation.

SCOPEThis standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect ofphysical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, blade cut, puncture and tearing.

DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTSProtection against mechanical hazards is expressed by a pictogram followed by four numbers (performance levels), each representing test performance against a specifi c hazard.

STANDARD EN 388: 2003GLOVES GIVING PROTECTION FROM MECHANICAL RISKS

The ‘Mechanical Risks’ pictogram is accompanied by a 4-digit code:

a. Resistance to abrasion Based on the number of cycles required to abrade through the sample given.

b. Blade cut resistance Based on the number of cycles required to cut through the sample at a constant speed.

c. Tear resistance Based on the amount of force required to tear the sample.

d. Puncture resistance Based on the amount of force required to pierce the sample with a standard sized point.

In all cases, (0) indicates the lowest level of performance, as follows:

a b c d

EN388 TEST PERFORMANCE LEVEL RATING:0 1 2 3 4 5

Individual useTo prevent any risk of microbial, organic or chemical contamination, use of any glove should be ‘personal’ and not shared with other wearers, even after washing. (European directive 89/656/EEC).

Checking wearEach user must carefully monitor the condition of their gloves and replace them as soon as they lose the properties required for the task undertaken. This is notably the case for chemical protection gloves, which may show signs of excessive softening, becoming porous, brittle or displaying cracks when in contact with corrosive substances. This is normal but potentially harmful to hands, therefore precautions must be taken. (See box opposite).

WashingSkytec gloves can be washed at 40°C with a neutral detergent (pH ≥ 5), but the machine should not be fi lled completely as this affects the removal of soiling. Mechanical and/or chemical resistant properties typically remain after three washes but this depends on the degree of wear to the glove which must be checked.

Before putting on the gloves, wash and dry your hands carefully.

In the event of prolonged use, do not use gloves beyond the recommended exposure time as highlighted within a COSHH assessment.

Regularly check that the gloves have not become porous or are displaying any signs of degradation.

Where appropriate, folding the sleeve of the glove over slightly can help prevent substances coming into contact with arms.

Before removing gloves follow the advice on the user instructions.

When removing the second glove, do not touch the outside with the bare hand, but grip it by the inside of the sleeve. (Glove removal protocols are available from Globus upon request).

Before reusing gloves, check that they are dry both inside and out.
