This season’s theme, Bridging Boundaries, explores the wide ranging influences that enriched the development of Baroque music in the 18th century. Many notable composers, including Handel, were inspired by the art and architecture of Italian cities such as Rome, Venice, Naples and Florence. They also looked to more exotic and faraway places which European countries had begun to trade with and some were intrigued by local musical traditions and folksongs. The music in this season’s programme includes many examples of these influences and with the addition of birdsong and fighting duels connections are explored and boundaries are bridged.

The third installment of Handel’s Muses looks into the life and career of Italian soprano Anna Maria Strada who lived in London from 1729-1738 and sang almost exclusively for Handel for nearly a decade. Performed by soprano Sarah Gabriel.

UN SOSPIR - HANDEL’S ITALIAN INFLUENCESThursday 5 September, 6.30-7.30pm

Emma Dogliani (soprano), Stuart Wild (harpsichord), Kate Conway (violin) and Pippa Mason (cello) perform a selection of Handel’s finest Cantatas written during his time in Italy (1707-1710) as well as several gems by his contemporaries including Vivaldi.

Continuum perform virtuosic repertoire for flute and cello featuring florid obbligato for the harpsichord. They are Elizabeth Walker (baroque flute), Christopher Poffley (cello), Michael Overbury (harpsichord).

LE RAPPEL DES OISEAUX: BIRDS AND BIRDSONGSThursday 19 September, 6.30-7.30pm

Birds and birdsongs have provided a stimulating source of inspiration for many composers throughout music history. Some claim that the development of music was initiated by the imitation of birdsongs. Masumi Yamamoto explores this subject from composers Couperin, Rameau, Dornel, Duphly and Daquin.

DUE CEMBALISunday 29 September, 2-3.30pm

Keyboard duets were common across Europe from early Baroque to the 19th century. The rarer, more luxurious form of keyboard duet was for two instruments and Petra Hajduchova and David Wright perform music by Couperin, JS Bach, Soler and an early suite by Handel.

HOMMAGE À JEAN-MICHEL DAMASEThursday 3 October, 6.30-7.30pm

The Amorosi Duo Adel Sahnoun (flute) and Federica Mossone (harp) celebrates the life and works of French composer Jean-Michel Damase (1928–2013) interposed with music by Handel and Piazzola.

BHS RECITAL: A SENSE OF THEATRE…Tuesday 8 October, 6.30-7.30pm

The British Harpsichord Society invites Karen Glen to perform. Karen will explore the laughter, tears and intrigue of theatre and will perform JS Bach’s Partita No.3 and pieces by Couperin.

HANDEL’S MUSES: ÉLISABETH DUPARCThursday 10 October, 6.30-7.30pm

The final Handel’s Muses concert charts the life of French soprano Élisabeth Duparc. Nicknamed ‘La Francesina’, she sang for Handel in the late 1730s where demand for opera was waning. Handel began writing music in the oratorio form and it was Duparc who sang the title roles in Deidamia and Semele.

Sunday 13 October, 12-4pm

Families are invited to get creative and explore Handel’s home. From candelabras to harpsichords, get inspired and design your own pop-up Georgian House to take away. Georgian costumes and family trails also available throughout the day. This is a drop-in event and is suitable for families with children aged 7-12 years. Tickets included in museum admission price of £6 adults, £5 concessions and free for children.

FRESCOBALDI AND HIS FOLLOWERSSaturday 5 October, 2-3.30pm

Frescobaldi was an ingenious Renaissance composer and performer who left a hugely influential legacy in the art of expression at the keyboard. His performance style challenged the very foundation of music and inspired generations of musicians including Froberger, JS Bach, Couperin, CPE Bach and Clementi. In this lecture-recital Dr Elena Vorotko, Honorary Research Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music will explore connections between Frescobaldi’s music and that of his followers.

BHS WEEKEND RECITAL: JOHANN CASPAR FERDINAND FISCHERSaturday 19 October, 2-3.30pm

Thomas Foster and Pawel Siwczak explore the harpsichord music of Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1656-1746). Fischer is one of several German composers of the period to be strongly influenced by Lully. The event will feature dances and other pieces from Ariadne Musica, Musicalisches Blumen-Büschlein and Musikalischer Parnassus.

This exhibition is the first of a series looking in detail at specific years in the life of George Frideric Handel. As well as detailing

the events in his own personal and professional life, it also explores other significant artistic, scientific and political events

during the year of which Handel would have been aware.

The exhibition has been researched and written with the assistance of Handel House Volunteers.

The Bach Players paint a musical picture of chamber music presented to Louis XIV by his favourite composers. This concert offers a rare chance to hear the work of the virtuoso harpsichordist and composer Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Marin Marais’s enactment of a surgical operation (with narration) and his stirring Sonnerie. The Bach Players are Nicolette Moonen (violin), Jonathan Manson (viola da gamba), Lynda Sayce (theorbo), Pawel Siwczak (harpsichord).

BHS RECITAL: ‘WILD BUT PLEASING WHEN UNDERSTOOD’Tuesday 12 November, 6.30-7.30pm

Jane Chapman (harpsichord) and Yu-Wei Hu (baroque flute) perform works from The Oriental Miscellany; being a collection of the most favourite airs of Hindoostan, compiled and adapted for the harpsichord, &c. by William Hamilton Bird (Calcutta, 1789). This is the first publication of Indian music written in staff notation for performance on Western instruments, most notably the harpsichord. These arrangements give a fascinating glimpse into music making and social interaction in late 18th century India.

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION RECORDER WORKSHOPSaturday 9 November, 12-4pm

This workshop is an opportunity to explore the beautiful, rich repertoire of Italian baroque music led by recorder specialist Lisete da Silva. This workshop complements the concert on 14 November. Suitable for players from 16 years old with Grade 5 and above. Music will be provided in advance.

THE ITALIAN CONNECTIONThursday 14 November, 6.30-7.30pm

Italian music played an important part in shaping musical tastes in 18th century London. Influenced by the Grand Tour, music by Corelli, Geminiani and Castrucci were widely published. This concert delves into this varied and virtuosic repertoire for recorder, a popular instrument for domestic music making. Performed by Lisete da Silva (recorders, director), Ricardo Barros (harpsichord), Nick Stringfellow (baroque cello).

VIOLA THROUGH THE AGESThursday 28 November, 6.30-7.30pm

Elena Artamonova and Kamilla Isanbaeva charts the development of viola sonatas in Germany and Italy in the 17th and 19th centuries. The programme includes a transcription of one of the rarely performed sonatas by Friedrich Wilhelm Rust (1739–1796) arranged by the founder of the Russian Viola, Vadim Borisovsky (1900-1972).

ITALIAN WILDFIRE!Thursday 21 November, 6.30-7.30pm

The exotic taste of Italian culture spread across 18th Century Europe at an astonishing rate. In particular, Italian music and musicians arriving in London were met with an almost frenzied enthusiasm. The Burney Players perform trio and solo sonatas by the trend-setters and those who sought to imitate them. They are Ian Wilson (recorders), Nadja Zwiener (violin), Harriet Wiltshire (cello), Kasia Tomczak-Feltrin (harpsichord).

ARCATA BAROQUE perform Christmas songs from Lampe’s publication, Hymns on the Great Festivals (1746), one of the first publications of music intended for use by the Methodists; and Christmas songs from JS Bach’s Anna Magdalena songbook. They are Elin Harries (soprano), Carina Drury (cello) and Nathaniel Mander (harpsichord).

Award-winning vocal ensemble Cries of London offers a guided tour of lesser-known Christmas music, from Byrd’s verse-carols to Mexican guaracha, via mediaeval nowells and newly-written settings of well-loved texts. Cries of London are Alice Privett (soprano), Martha McLorinan (mezzo-soprano), Benedict Hymas (tenor), Peter Foggitt (baritone) and Nick Ashby (bass).

Join us for the last concert of the year. Featuring Christmas arias from Messiah and other seasonal bons-bons by Handel and others; sparkling organ music on the Handel House chamber organ and festive carols for the audience to sing! En garde for my first concert series at Handel House. As Handel and Hendrix were no strangers to a jam session, the theme is duelling. These four concerts will celebrate my new collaborations with leading artists from fields as diverse as classical, jazz, folk, electronic, and the ‘un-categories’. I’m also honoured to feature works by members and associates of LSO Soundhub, such as Richard Bullen, Robert Szymanek and Raymond Yiu. The grand finale of the series will feature a duel, commissioned by Handel House, between Red Priest’s harpsichordist, David Wright, and Björk’s percussionist, Manu Delago. Place your bets...

Ellie and Tom are astounding violinists who perform across the world with the LSO, Puertas Quartet and Living Room London. They are also husband and wife. With a programme exploring the balance and infinity of ground bass, a duet may become a duel. Cevanne will be there with voice and harp to mediate and agitate.

CREWDSONSunday 20 October, 2-4pm

Hugh ‘Crewdson’ Jones is a prolific inventor and who performs with Matthew Herbert. He has created an electronic concertina inspired by the subtlety of acoustic folk instruments. The ‘Concertronica’ will sample and manipulate Cevanne’s harp to create modern British folk songs. The duel of electronics and acoustics will be so entangled, you will not know where one ends and the other begins.

Chris (of Troyka) is a virtuosic guitarist described by Jazzwise as ‘one of the most imaginatively skilled young axesmiths on the London scene’. In this concert, he will battle blues, Baroque and memories and emotions will be captured in ‘Pandora’s music box’ by Cevanne.

THE EVE OF BATTLE ORATORIO FT. MANU DELAGO vs DAVID WRIGHT Sunday 27 October, 2-4pm

What if Eve were a codebreaker, who resurfaces throughout time, with different names, different faces? A duel of storytellers in music, eager to claim their version of Eve as the best: Björk’s percussionist Manu Delago versus Red Priest’s harpsichordist David Wright; Cellist Gregor Riddell against Bel Canto singer Nina Horrocks-Hopayian. Accounts of Persephone, Pandora, and even Alan Turing may become ammunition. For the first time, this duel pits one of the newest instruments, the hang (and its leading virtuoso) against Handel’s weapon of choice. Whose tale will triumph?
