Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, August 17 th 2019 Race 1 #2 Just Kitten You #3 Cause for Alarm #5 Madsam #7 Kyslios's Justice #2 JUST KITTEN YOU stuck on pretty gamely when finishing a fairly close fifth last week despite getting a wide trip. He returns on short rest and figures to fit. #3 CAUSE FOR ALARM finished three lengths ahead of Just Kitten You in a 10 furlong event on July 12, then returned on the 31st with a decent third on the Tapeta. The Beyer in that race may be inflated and could also cause this horse to take significant wagering action. #5 MADSAM was a well beaten fifth in a soft $25,000 event going 10 furlongs last time out. He takes a second consecutive class drop here. #7 KYSLIOS'S JUSTICE has been in good form so far this season, picking up a check in each of his five starts so far. He can run with any number of styles and could easily pick up a piece of the action again. Race 2 #7 Sevencomingout #5 Where's the Gold #4 Gunner Ben #6 Big Blind #7 SEVENCOMINGOUT scored a front end win two starts back in a Tapeta sprint, then got hooked in a duel around two turns on the inner turf and came up empty on July 8. He returns after a five week break and gets back to a main track sprint. #5 WHERE'S THE GOLD has had tried to close into slow paces with wide trips in both of his starts so far this season. If things set up better for him he could find the winner's circle. #4 GUNNER BEN has run well in both of his starts since dropping to this level, racing as a closer from last. Like Where's the Gold, the more pace the better for this gelding. #6 BIG BLIND stretch back out to a route last time out and was unlucky not to be second. He won at a sprint earlier in the season and has speed figures that fit. Race 3 #6 Foxxy Belle Best Bet #1 Dynatown #5 Bear Kitty #3 My Borrowed Angel #6 FOXXY BELLE was able to make the lead and drew off easily to beat non-threes last time out. It looks like she could be the controlling speed once again. #1 DYNATOWN pressed the pace before flattening out around two turns on the inner turf on Queen's Plate day. She has been off for seven weeks, cuts back to a sprint and catches a softer field. #5 BEAR KITTY has broken poorly in both of her two starts since being claimed and had trip trouble in the most recent outing. She may be able to get some better racing luck here. #3 MY BORROWED ANGEL finished third in a spread out group two weeks ago in her first start at this level. She's bred to take to the turf. Race 4 #5 Maritime Breeze #4 Ready and Perfect #7 Stranded #1 Dashing Angel #5 MARITIME BREEZE arguably should have won last time out, rallying in the stretch while being herded inwards towards the wire. She had some tough luck in her earlier turf starts and may be proving that she is a superior turf horse. #4 READY AND PERFECT has run well in all three of her starts to date, racing both on the front end and closing. One would assume she will trying to make the lead here; she could be a serious threat in her first start around two turns. #7 STRANDED debuted with a very game third place finish in the same race that Maritime Breeze exits. She could easily improve as she gains experience. #1 DASHING ANGEL stretched out to 10 furlongs last time out and finished evenly in a race won by a lone speed leader. She tries the inner turf and may be able to get a very nice trip from the inside post. Race 5 #5 Lapochka #2 Where's the Widget #7 Nevaeh's Valentine #6 Gorgeous Kitten #5 LAPOCHKA raced evenly in a soft second level allowance last time out when making his return after five and a half months off with a vet scratch in between. He drops in for $40,000 and gets back to the grass. #2 WHERE'S THE WIDGET won as easily as possible for $20,000 on the main track going wire to wire on July 5. His lone turf win came in the 2016 Bunty Lawless Stakes; he may be back on track here. #7 NEVAEH'S VALENTINE ran a good third against a solid group on the inner turf last time out. Classy speed type should be competitive once again. #6 GORGEOUS KITTEN closed well to be a competitive fourth for $20,000 in his first start off of the claim last time out. The pace could set up well for him here. Race 6 #1 Real Coal #2 Ka Gee Gee #5 Patton's Girl #6 I'll Take the Gold #1 REAL COAL was run down late on the E. P. Taylor on July 27. She may be the speed of the speed here; speed has been very tough in the five furlong inner turf races. #2 KA GEE GEE was able to beat a soft group of boys at this distance on July 28. Her form tends to be up and down but if she runs back to her last effort she could double up. #5 PATTON'S GIRL outran her odds when finishing fourth by about two lengths in the Royal North. She will likely be well bet off of that big effort. #6 I'LL TAKE THE GOLD was able to go wire to wire on the E. P. Taylor when entered for $40,000 two back, then dueled for the lead in the Ontario Colleen and faltered in the stretch. She should be more competitive here.

Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, August 17th 2019 Race 1 #2 Just Kitten You #3 Cause for Alarm #5 Madsam #7 Kyslios's Justice #2 JUST KITTEN YOU stuck on pretty gamely when finishing a fairly close fifth last week despite getting a wide trip.

Race 3 #6 Foxxy Belle – Best Bet #1 Dynatown #5 Bear Kitty #3 My Borrowed Angel #6 FOXXY BELLE was able to make the lead and drew off easily to beat non-threes last time out. It looks like she could be the controlling speed once again. #1 DYNATOWN pressed the pace before flattening out around two turns on the inner turf on Queen's Plate day.

Race 7 #7 Fast Scene #6 Western Taffy #2 Fair Maiden #1 Saratoga Vision #7 FAST SCENE has been very impressive in both of her wins so far. She was sent to Saratoga and had a breeze over the turf; if she gets over the lawn well she should be tough. #6 WESTERN TAFFY was touted as the "international good thing" when winning her debut on July 13. She has had a series of breezes on the training turf coming into this race. #2 FAIR MAIDEN dusted colts when winning on the Arlington polytrack on July 21, earning a 90 Beyer. Oftentimes blowout wins produce inflated Beyers, but she should be respected based on the ease of the win. #1 SARATOGA VISION was beaten narrowly in her turf debut last week. There is plenty of speed in here; she could close and grab a piece of the action.

Race 8 #7 Who's Got It #3 Guitar George #1 Forester's Destiny #8 Bourbon Extension #7 WHO'S GOT IT was able to beat a fairly soft group of first level allowance foes when kicking off his season on July 21. In his last start against open claiming foes, which came for $32,000 last September he was a solid second. #3 GUITAR GEORGE has run well in all three of his starts so far this season, exiting a good second for this price on July 17. He is one of several logical contenders here. #1 FORESTER'S DESTINY looked dangerous but tired in the stretch in the same July 17 race that Guitar George exits, finishing a well beaten fourth. He did improve as the season went on last year. #8 BOURBON EXTENSION was a distant second behind Where's the Widget last time out. His form since returning from Penn National has been very solid.

Race 9 #3 Magic Spell #7 Sanity #8 Gold Lace #1 Veil #3 MAGIC SPELL exits a string of three runner up finishes, most recently behind Summer Sunday in the Royal North. She seems to be improving with each start and could be ready for a win here. #7 SANITY had some trip trouble when making her first start off of the claim on turf two weeks ago. Hard-trying mare could have a solid pace to close into here. #8 GOLD LACE beat both Magic Spell and Sanity when winning her season opener on turf on June 29. She's looking for her fifth consecutive win here and will likely be favoured. #1 VEIL dueled with Summer Sunday before giving way to be fifth in the Royal North, then finished a game third at this level two weeks ago. All three of her career wins come on the synthetic.

Race 10 #8 He's a Macho Man #3 Lucas n' Lori #5 Tone Broke #9 Encierro #8 HE’S A MACHO MAN finished well in the Queen’s Plate in spite of the speed favouring track and having to steady late on the turn. He was a bit even in the Prince of Wales on dirt; if he takes to the turf he seems like he’ll be able to go the distance. #3 LUCAS N’ LORI ran a close fourth against a solid group of older first level allowance foes going 10 furlongs last time out. He seems to be gradually improving. #5 TONE BROKE was unable to make much headway on the top two in the Queen’s Plate, but turned things around with a game win in the Prince of Wales. He is bred to take to the turf. #9 ENCIERRO was an easy winner in an Auction-restricted maiden race two back, then was an okay fourth on a noticeably hot day in the Toronto Cup. He looks like he may be able to handle the stretch out to 12 furlongs.

Race 11 #1 Starship Jubilee #2 Lunar Garden #6 Miss Mo Mentum #5 Oh Zap #1 STARSHIP JUBILEE exits a very good second in the Dance Smartly on Queen’s Plate day. She looks a step above this group. #2 LUNAR GARDEN could be the controlling speed here. She broke her maiden on the turf last summer; if Starship Jubilee doesn’t fire this filly could be the upsetter. #6 MISS MO MENTUM was a convincing winner of the Trillium two starts back, then ran well when finishing fourth in the Ontario Matron. The turf does not seem to be her preferred surface but she is capable of racing well over it. #5 OH ZAP competed in an off-turf sprint in May, her only start of the meet so far. In that start she showed some speed, had a wide trip and came up empty. Her form around two turns on turf prior to coming here is solid.

Race 12 #7 Uncle Howard #2 Our Uncle Drew #1 Quality Brew #11 Now We Are Nine #6 Cerrado #7 UNCLE HOWARD is a speed horse in a race without an abundance of front end types. His lone turf race was a poor effort; he deserves one more chance over the grass. #2 OUR UNCLE DREW has closed gamely in both of his starts on turf this season. His speed figures look solid for this group. #1 QUALITY BREW ran a good second against $40,000/Ontario Sired foes on debut, then came up empty second time out. He now drops in for $25,000. #11 NOW WE ARE NINE was a disappointing third as a heavy favourite at Fort Erie last time out. He has shown signs of talent and now gets onto turf for the first time. #6 CERRADO finished third, two and a half lengths ahead of Our Uncle Drew last time out. He looks logical here but the potential lack of early pace could hinder his chances.
