Slow StitchingSlow stitching centres around the philosophy to ‘make do and mend’ or ‘waste not, want not’, an ethos of yesteryear. It is a nod to the generations that came before in which reusing and recycling were necessary and admirable.

It is not a complicated process which relies on numerous fancy, perfectly executed stitches and fastidious neatness, rather, it embraces the timeworn nature of materials, and the individuality of hand-stitching methods. Simplicity is key.

About Lisa MattockLisa first found a love for fabrics and textiles in high school, where her unique creations made from strips of fabric which were knitted, woven and embellished with embroidered flowers made from beads and sequins led to her being invited to exhibit in ‘ArtExpress’.

Lisa then gathered expertise as a textile artist, florist, food stylist, and visual merchandiser, leading her to run an upmarket florist and homewares store in Sydney’s eastern suburbs for many years.

These experiences and her long-standing passion for vintage fabrics and embroidery made Forage by Lisa Mattock a natural step. Forage allows Lisa to discover and collect reclaimed fabrics and embellishments and share her passion for creating intricately layered textile artworks.

Bring along your fabric collections and learn the art of combining old fabrics to repurpose them in a contemporary, unique way. This class is designed so that there is no ‘one size fits all’. There are no templates to follow, no right or wrong way to approach your Slow Stitch project.

From a young age Niki McDonald – also known as Tapestry Girl – has been a creative person. As she grew so did her awareness of the world and art as an extension of herself. Niki completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts with a Major in Textiles at Wollongong University, NSW. It was three years of weaving, dyeing, spinning, stitching, printing, creating and falling in love with textiles as an art form.

As life moved on, needlepoint tapestry became Niki’s main medium. Needing a clean, portable art form that required no studio and could accompany her to all kids’ activities led to hours sewing while her children had swimming classes, kicked balls, attended birthday parties or played in the park.

As Niki’s art practice continues to evolve, experimentation ignites curiosity and results in a practice that is engaging and industrious, looking to the urban landscape for inspiration. The repetitive nature of needlepoint allows her to connect with her intuition and inspires her to think outside the box using basic tools and techniques. Keeping her work limited to six colours, using the repetition of half-cross stitch to emulate the pixelation in dot matrix, or creating a more chaotic experience by changing the cross stitch size while key black lines are used to bring the image together.

Niki’s work has gained recognition in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Africa and Europe including publications in Holland and France. Niki is part of a textile group, The Seed Stitch Collective; whom facilitated the Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Award in 2018 for NSW textile artists. The finalists work was exhibited at the Australian Design Centre.

Michelle Lackenby is a qualified lecturer in the areas of visual communication, graphic design and photography and has always been obsessed with pushing the boundaries of art and design within the realm of paper and bookbinding. She has over 20 years industry experience in creative fields which led to the opening of her own business specialising in artist services, design and workshops. Michelle is the resident paper artist for Paperazzi Design Studio where she collaborates with other artists on installations and bringing paper visions to life. Join Michelle each day on stand for an intimate workshop learning how to create perfect paper pieces. There’s a different class at 1pm each day.

Japanese Book BindingFriday February 15 – 1pm to 3pm Learn the art of Japanese bookbinding using beautiful handmade papers to decorate covers of books. You will learn various Japanese binding stitch techniques and patterns and how to create your very own books to take home. The techniques covered include simple Japanese stitch, Japanese stab binding, hemp stitch and tortoise shell binding. Each technique builds on the last and you will create your own set of soft cover books to take home.

International Textile Art DisplayPresented by Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), this museum quality exhibition, Textile Posters, combines the familiar materials of quilts with the graphic vernacular of posters in this visually engaging textile exhibition.

The selected pieces reflect the wide diversity of posters. What they all have in common is an emblematic economy of text and imagery. Conveying a message in the blink of an eye, it is that particular aesthetic consideration which characterises these textile artworks.

Whether to inform, educate or persuade, some posters in this exhibition grab the viewer’s attention while others are more subtle in their approach, forcing the viewer to study the individual components.

CONTEMPORARY FREEFORM WEAVERSky Carter

Sky Carter is a self-taught Sydney-based fibre and textile artist who has spent most of her life experimenting, exploring and dabbling with various creative mediums. She found her passion in freeform weaving which she now pursues full-time at her studio at Inner West Studios in Tempe NSW.

Sky shares her love of weaving with others through workshops, where she teaches her weaving style; an expressive, free and intuitive way of weaving while respecting technical weaving principles. Sky has exhibited her works at art fairs, as well as in group and solo art shows. She has exhibited installation works in Chicago and Sydney. Having completed design studies with a major in colour she is continually developing and evolving her skills.

As a self-taught weaver Sky developed her own loom and weaving tools based on her style of weaving using bamboo, a material that is both sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.

DemonstrationsJoin Sky on her sumptuous textile laden stand throughout the day as she demonstrates the secrets of her studio methods and techniques including her free form and intuitive interpretation of weaving and the various looms she works on. Sky will share her story of how she became a full-time artist and answer any questions you have.

“After teaching myself to weave using a makeshift cardboard loom I looked for a board loom and found

a gap in the market so, naturally, I had to design and make my own. For me, it’s a preferable loom to use for small and medium-sized works, more

ergonomic and great for teaching with.”

Sky also says the complementary weaving tools were just a natural flow on from the loom design. She will have weaving tools and accessories at Sydney Stitches & Craft.


STUDIO SHOWCASESAFE PASSAGEFashion Design

Second year Bachelor of Fashion Design students of the renowned Fashion Design Studio at TAFE NSW will showcase a collection of their creative surface textile designs and fashion garments made from these fabrics.

‘The Dandy and the Bloomsbury Garden’ project is a creative collaboration between the Fashion Design Studio and industry giants Liberty of London and Waverley Mills.

In this project students re-invent these two iconic historical brands by experimenting with their traditional fabrics and personalising it with a range of textile techniques.

Installation:Created from yarn using crochet techniques, this installation, Safe Passage, is one of the creative highlights of the show. It is the largest crochet artwork Prudence Mapstone has created, measuring a stunning 6 metres long.

Prudence is well known in the worldwide knitting and crochet scene for her creative freeform garments and art pieces. The work will be hung over a framework for you to walk beneath the work.

MARY BROWN,S EMBROIDERED WORKS

Beautiful Embroidery See a very special display, Retrospective of Mary Brown’s Embroidered Works from 2000 to 2019.

Be inspired by fine embroidery by one of Australia’s internationally renowned embroiderers.

The earliest works in Mary Brown’s retrospective embroidery exhibition are pieces that she did for assessment at the Royal School of Needlework in the UK in 2000 and 2001. In 2007, Mary published a book internationally on Goldwork Embroidery. Along with a history of Goldwork in the West, she designed and worked on 15 projects for her book. A couple of these works feature in this display. Other works in the exhibition have been in response to fashion, or are her take on medieval beliefs and culture. Mary also creates works that are just pure embellishment for fashion.

About Mary BrownMary Brown has had a visual arts background since graduating from National Art School in 1969. She taught Visual Arts in senior secondary colleges for more than two decades. In her own creative practice she painted and printed. Embroidery became of enormous interest to her once Art Wearables were introduced into the HSC Visual Arts syllabus. From 2007 to 2017 Mary was a sessional lecturer in the Fashion and Textile Department at the University of Technology Sydney.

Candle Making Louise Ho

Kokedama, which means ‘moss ball’ originated in Japan in the 1600s. Originally invented for bonsai trees, they are now making a comeback in various forms, shapes and sizes and are used with a variety of plant types. You will have a chance to get your hands dirty and learn all the steps to construct two kokedamas (one small and one medium). Learn the history of the kokedama and how to care for your kokedama so they will stay alive long after you’ve taken them home.

Natalie May is passionate about papercraft and feels lucky to have made it her full-time occupation. She loves to create in all styles and this keeps her inspired. Natalie is a versatile artist, who loves to teach and share her passion for creating scrapbooking layouts, cards, mixed media layouts, paper-based layouts, art journals and abstract canvas art. Conducting classes for kids is also a passion.

Natalie teaches around Australia and New Zealand and is an ambassador for Lindy’s Stamp Gang and brand ambassador for Gel Press & X-Press Graf-X. She loves everything ink and colour based, and also designs for Imaginarium Designs and is an Intermediate Certified Copic Designer.

It’s well known that our mental, physical and emotional health are all connected, but how can craft improve our general well-being?

“ “Social wellness comes from being connected to people in your community and craft groups can provide that community as well

as the friendships and shared interests that help people thrive.

Craft can have surprising health and wellness benefits, from simple relaxation achieved by the rhythm of stitching or crochet, through to reconciliation of emotional conflicts as a result of art therapy.

Crafters have reported that creative pursuits have helped in the management of addictions, to reduce anxiety and to calm negative behaviour. The rhythm of knitting and the mathematics required keep the mind focused on the moment rather than letting anxiety take over.

Repetition involved in many crafts is soothing and conducive to a state of ‘flow’ – engagement where other worries and stresses are forgotten for at least a while.

The American Academy of Neurology reports in a recent study that craft can help protect the brain, stimulating new neurons to maintain cognitive health in middle and old age resulting in improved memory.

Knitting is being recommended as a pain management technique by health practitioners. At the end of World War 1, this diversional therapy was used to treat soldiers suffering from what we now know as post-traumatic stress syndrome, and has now resurfaced today with psychologists prescribing knitting for pain management and colouring-in as a relaxation technique.

Mindfulness – beneficial for our mental health can be induced more easily with repetitive simple tasks such as knitting – a meditative activity keeps the hands busy and the mind focused which dissipates anxiety and facilitates calm. Zentangle takes craft activity to a new meditative level, and people who paint or stitch also report a feeling of calm.

Enhanced self-esteem can come from making something. For children, craft can also provide a non-tech, non-screen activity to detox from the digital world. Doing craft encourages kids to pay attention to detail, to control impulses and to express themselves and helps in the development of fine-motor skills.

However holistic health requires more than physical and mental wellbeing. Social, spiritual and emotional aspects are also part of wellness and craft can address these needs.

Social wellness comes from being connected to people in your community and craft groups can provide that community as well as the friendships and shared interests that help people thrive. Guilds, men’s sheds and craft friendship groups encourage social connections.

Spiritual health involves having a sense of purpose that can come from creating and belonging to a group is even better. Many quilt groups have programs to donate finished works to people in need. Aussie Hero Quilts has had a positive influence on the lives of hundreds of our Defence Force personnel. Angel Gowns helps fill a void for families affected by the loss of a baby. Many groups fundraise to help charities too.

Connectedness to tradition and to previous generations can also come from doing craft.

Craft can also promote emotional wellness. It can be a form of creative expression, and even to work through feelings of trauma or loss. Making commemorative works such as memory quilts, painting, journaling, scrapbooking or textile art can all be used to journey through a difficult period. Just the activity of making can provide much-needed clear head space.

Intellectual wellness can come from lifelong learning and craft can provide opportunities for exchange of knowledge, learning from each other and teaching others.

People who do craft report mental health benefits such as reduced stress and less anxiety.

At the Sydney Stitches & Craft show, we’ll promote the wellness benefits of craft through our new Craft Wellness Wheel, educating people about the powerful role craft can play in our general health and well-being.

The Western Sydney Woodturners will be displaying a wide range of high-quality handcrafted items from a variety of timbers. Club members will demonstrate the craft of woodturning, showing how to make a relatively plain piece of timber into a useful utensil or statement piece.

There’ll be pens, salt and paper grinders, sewing tools, cheese players, cheese knives, cutting boards, large bowls and much more for sale. This huge range of functional and beautiful items are wonderful pieces to take home or give as gifts.

They will also have small items for sale to raise funds for the club’s charity, The Children’s Ward at Mount Druitt Hospital.

For the past five years, 350 dedicated volunteers at Angel Gowns Australia have been making baby bereavement gowns upcycled from donated wedding dresses, which have been given to hundreds of hospitals and funeral homes to be offered to bereaved families when needed.

To celebrate five years, a curated selection of donated vintage gowns and accessories will be on display, as well as a showcase of baby gowns made by members. You are invited to sit and make a heart to contribute to the display, with materials provided.

About Angel GownsAngel Gowns Australia Inc is a nationally registered charity and not-for-profit organisation. They hope to touch the hearts of all Australians, especially those who have experienced the unimaginable death, illness or disability of their baby or child.

Volunteer seamstresses lovingly handcraft beautiful Angel Gown garments from previously donated wedding dresses from brides who want the love from their

wedding day to be made into tiny Angel Gowns garments.
