    Donning and Removing of Personal Protective Equipments

    Purpose:

    To protect health care workers and clients from transmission of potentially infective

    materials

    Preparation

    Consider:

    a. Which activities will be required while the nurse is in the clients roomb. If special handing is indicated for removal of any specimen or other materials from

    the room

    c. Which supplies are present within the clients room, and which must be brought toyou

    Arrange for the care of your other clients, if necessary

    Assemble equipment and supplies:

    a. ownb. !ask

    $emove or secure all loose items

    Procedure

    "%plain to the client what you are going to do, why it is necessary and how he can

    cooperate Wash hands

    Don a clean gown:

    a. &ick up a clean gown and allow it to unfold in front of youb. 'lide the arms and hands through sleeves

    (asten the ties at the neck to keep the gown in place

    d. )verlap the gown at the back as much as possible and fasten the ties Don the face mask*

    a. +ocate the top edge of the mask

    b. old the mask by the top two rings or loopsc. &lace the upper edge of the mask over the bridge of the nose and tie the upper ties at

    the back of the head or secure around the ears

    d. 'ecure the lower edge of the mask under the chin and tie the lower ties at the nape of

    the neck

    e. If the mask has a metal strip, ad-ust this firmly over the bridge of the nosef. Wear the mask only once and do not wear it longer than the manufacturer recommends

    or after it becomes wet

    Don protective eyewear

    Don clean disposable gloves:

    a. o special technique is required

    b. If you are wearing a gown, pull the gloves up to cover the cuffs of the gown.

    To remove soiled &&", the gloves first

    a. If wearing a gown that is tied at the waist in front, undo the ties before removing thegloves

    b. $emove first glove by grasping it on its palmar surface -ust below the cuff. /glove to

    glove0

    c. &ull first the glove completely off by inverting or rolling the glove inside outd. #ontinue to hold the inverted removed glove by the fingers of the remaining gloved

    hand. &lace the first 1 fingers of the bare hand inside the cuff of the second glove

    &ull the glove off to the fingers by turning it inside out. This pulls the first glove inside

    the second glove

    f. 2sing the bare hand, continue to remove the gloves, which are now inside out, anddispose them

    Wash your hands

    $emove mask*

    a. If using a mask with strings, first untie the lower strings of the mask

    2ntie the top strings and while holding the ties securely, remove the mask from the facec. 3iscard a disposable mask in the waste container

    d. Wash hands again if they become contaminated accidentally $emove the gown when preparing to leave the room*

    a. Avoid touching the soiled parts on the outside of the gown if possible

    b. rasp the gown along the inside of the neckc. $oll up the gown with the soiled part inside, and discard it in the appropriate

    container

    $emove protective eyewear and dispose properly or place in the appropriate

    receptacle for cleaning.
