The Art of Hope - April 7-9 at Centennial Theatre

This year around 200 Handsworth students, from seven different courses, have been working together to create the students’ latest original play, THE ART OF HOPE. The play is a mix of dramatic and comedic scenes that explores how a piece of art impacts on the lives of strangers in a park. As usual, there will be lots of dancing and singing, and it will be presented at CENTENNIAL THEATRE from Thursday, April 7th to Saturday, April 9th at 7:00 pm.   Students may purchase tickets in the school gallery at

lunchtime (12:40-1:30 pm) starting on Tuesday March 8th.  The discounted prices of tickets purchased at HANDSWORTH ONLY are $17 for adults, $14 for students. Please bring to the lunchtime ticket seller, the completed form (at the end of this newsletter), along with cash or a cheque payable to Handsworth Secondary School.   Upon purchase, tickets will be sent home with the student. If you would like to leave tickets at the “will call” table please advise the lunchtime ticket sellers.  The “will call” table will be set up in the lobby of the theatre on the evening of the performance for pick-up of prepaid tickets.  For example, some students may choose to take family tickets home and leave their guest tickets at the “will call” table.   Tickets are also available through the Centennial Theatre box office at the regular price of $18 for adults and $15 for students. Check out http://www.centennialtheatre.com/   Please note that tickets are sold on a first come, first serve, basis. The theatre has limited seating capacity, and we tend to sell out on the Friday and Saturday performances. So, purchase your tickets early!

Handsworth Music The Kiwanis Jazz festival was a fine success with the four school jazz bands all playing great! The Sr. Jazz Band members received a Gold rating for their efforts as well as Lucas Dubovik and Braden Mamen receiving special recognition scholarships.

The Strings Extravaganza will be on March 8th in Centennial Theatre at 7:00 PM. This great strings event includes all Handsworth strings ensembles as well as the students in the elementary schools’ strings programs from the Handsworth family of schools. Members of the band and strings groups will perform on stage at the Centennial Theatre with musicians from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on March 9th. Many students from Handsworth Music have been selected for this incredible opportunity to play side by side with members of the world class players in the VSO. The North Vancouver District Honour Band and District Honour String Orchestras are the only school groups to have this opportunity. The two Handsworth music teachers have facilitated this district event in each of their special areas; for band Mr. Bradshaw, and for strings Mr. Kabok. Champian Fulton will be playing a clinic in the music room for all jazz students on March 3rd after school. This is a professional Jazz Quartet. It should be a great event!

Economics is EverywhereIn February Handsworth business 9/10 students attended Economics is Everywhere, a fun one-day conference that consisted of a mix of short lectures, games and activities that introduced economic principles using real-life examples. Topics covered include: Scarcity, Choice, Opportunity Cost, Marginal Decision Making, Incentives, Trade and Economic Systems.  Students were treated to a catered lunch, a featured keynote speaker and breakout sessions.

Program Spotlight: Handsworth Parent Advisory Council ‘So inspiring’ and ‘just amazing’ were a couple of the comments from parents who attended the February 15th, Handsworth PAC meeting where student art work was on display and student musicians played.

This truly inspiring evening highlighted student achievement and participation in a wide variety of enriched programs at Handsworth and we’d like to personally thank all eighteen of the students who took the time to share their personal experiences.

Handsworth Student Council Vice-President Elise gave an overview of the council’s work promoting school spirit and special events and also talked about the increased confidence she’s gained through the Handsworth Drama Program. Grade 12 students Owen and Lorissa talked about their involvement in athletics, sports leadership and clubs, all of which have enriched their time at Handsworth and helped to shape their futures.

Grade 11 students Ross and Lucas gave a great presentation about the many opportunities they’ve had within the school’s well-respected Music Program, which have also led to worthwhile community connections.

Environmental Club members Brooke and Krista talked passionately about some of the ways the club is trying to make a difference in the school and community. They invited everyone to attend upcoming Earth Day events and mentioned their efforts to engage with elementary feeder schools.

Last but not least, Grade Nine students Bowen and Haddon talked about their involvment in the school’s Japan Exchange Program. They clearly enjoyed showing their billets around North Vancouver and are now looking forward to their upcoming adventure touring Japan and staying with their host family.

We tip our hats to all of the Handsworth students and staff who dedicate countless hours of their personal time pursuing excellence in their athletic, artistic, academic and service pursuits.

North Vancouver Superintendent of Schools John Lewis also attended the meeting and provided an update on the status of the Handsworth school rebuild and answered questions.
